India: Delhi’s urban forestry project to get carbon credits
OCTOBER 15, 2013
TIMES OF INDIA
The Indian forestry project in the wasteland of Deramandi has been chosen as eligible for the
UNFCCC’s clean development mechanism (CDM). The project, focusing on rejuvenating grasslands
and planting native varieties in the southern Aravali ridge, will be entitled to carbon credits for the
extent of reduction in carbon emissions. The project was eligible because of the increased
urbanization and open cast quartzite mines resulting in encroachment and degradation of a
flourishing flora and faura.
The project is estimated to save 12,138 metric tonnes CO2 equivalent per annum. If no objections are
raised, the project will get a final clearance for operating under CDM.
