5. FARE CHANGES
• Increased passenger fares by 2 paise per km for
suburban and ordinary second class
• 3 paise per km for mail/express second class
• 5 paise per km for sleeper class
• 10 paise per km for AC Chair Car, AC 3 tier and
First Class
• 15 paise per km for AC 2 tier
• 30 paise per km for AC I.
• Even the price of platform tickets has been raised to
Rs. 5 from Rs 3.
6. GREEN INITIATIVES
• Setting up of 72 MW capacity windmill plants in Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
• Setting up of 200 remote railway stations as 'green energy
stations' powered entirely by solar energy.
• Providing solar lighting system at 1000 manned level crossing
gates.
• Introduction of mobile emission test cars to measure pollution
level of diesel locomotives.
• Commissioning of two bio diesel plants at Raipur and
Tondiarpet.
• Introduction of a 'Green Train' to run through the pristine
forests of North Bengal.

9. Railway Electrification System
• Meaning
• Average horse power in elec is 1.6 times more then
conventional diesel locomotive
• The load bearing capacity of elec is 9% more then diesel
loco
• Average speed of elec is 8% higher then diesel loco
• The average fuel cost in diesel loco is 60% higher
passenger & 160% higher in goods carriage
• Diesel loco have 50% more failures then elec loco
• Electric loco- environment friendly - is that really so ??
One electric loco of 5000 HP requires 4.2 MW of power.
One mw of power requires 10 tonnes of coal per day
