*Problem statement
*Next generation transit system
*Benefits of straddling bus over existing transit
system
*Steps involved in implementation
*Features of straddling bus
*Major challenges and solutions
3
Problem Statement
*One of the major problems faced by the Indian urban
cities is the problem of traffic congestion. A big concern
is how to speed up the traffic.
*Putting more buses on the road will jam the roads even
worse and pollute the air.
4
MRTS
BRTS
Normal Bus
5
*Building more subway is costly and time consuming. So there is a need to device
a system compatible with existing infrastructure to reduce congestion.
*With the increasing population of urban cities and growing deficit between the
road networks and number of vehicles thus leading to pollution and waste of
resources, there is a demand for efficient public transport system proposed
solution
6
Next Generation Transit System
The model looks like a
subway or light-rail
train bestriding the road
The bus can reduce the
traffic jams 20%-30%
Powered by electricity
and solar energy
Reduced the traffic jams
by 20%-30%.
4-4.5M high with two
levels passenger boat on
the upper level and 7 M in
width while other vehicles
lower than 2M can go
Cost is about 5.36 billion
rupees to build the bus and a
40KM long path for it,
approximately 7% of metro
system
7
Average speed is 40-
50KM/Hr carrying 1200-
1400 passengers at a time
without blocking other
vehicle’s way
Large windows are
provided on the both lower
sides so that the illusion of
car moving back, is not
created.
8
Features of Straddling Bus
9
10
11
12
13
*Metro costs a lot and takes a long
time to build.
*BRTS takes up road spaces and
producing noise and pollution.
thus producing more congestion
on roads for other vehicles
*Normal bus system is not
sophisticated and the buses are
congested and a lot of time is
wasted travelling with these buses
*Large parking spaces are required
• It is cheaper and construction
takes less time
• It saves road spaces, efficient and
high in capacity
• Traveling with these buses will
consume less time and hence it is
more sophisticated
• Large parking spaces are not
required and can be parked on
roads without affecting the
passage of cars
Present Transit System Straddling Bus System
14
Key steps involved in the implementation
*Re - modelling of the road:
Laying Rails – The rails will be laid on both sides of the road and the bus can run on the rails
and save 30% energy.
15
*Paint white lines
The white lines on both sides of the road and buses will have auto pilots
which will follow these lines and run stable while moving.
16
*Building stations
Load / Unload through the sides. Using the built-in-ladder so that passengers can go
up and over pass through the ceiling doors. Stations can be set up at every 2Km.
17
Power supply to buses
18
Ensuring safety
* Using laser ray scanning system
* using radar scanning system
* ultrasonic waves will be put forth from
the end of bus
* Escaping doors and inflated ladder for
fire or emergency exit.
19
Source of funding
*The estimated cost is about 5.36 Billion rupees
to build the straddling bus and a 40Km long path
for it, which is approximately 7% of Metro
system.
*Initial cost of a phase can be calculated.
*The total expenditure for that phase can be
divided among Central Govt., State Govt., Soft
loan and Private Public Partnership or Soft
loans.
20
Continued…
*Some part of investment for Ex. 30% can be
provided by Central Govt., 30% by State Govt.,
and rest can be raised by public private
partnership or soft loans.
*The revenue earned will be used firstly for
maintenance so that the project can run
successfully and the money left after this can be
used to pay the debt.
21
Scalability of solution
*Buses can carry 1200-1400 passengers at a time.
*Eco-friendly transit system and saves 860 Ton of
fuel every year reduces 2640Ton carbon
emission.
*It can produce more output from the given
sources.
*It doesn’t require extra space for its
development and running, like other public
transport system.
22
Sustainability of solution
*This project is sustainable because it is
compatible with the declining resources by
deriving its energy from renewable world which
is suffering from energy crisis. Also it provides a
low cost sophisticated and comfortable travel. In
India, many urban cities are being planned with
Metro’s and Bullet trains which costs a lot. So
this system can act as boon on coming future.
23
Metro rail transit system Straddling Bus system
• It requires huge infrastructure,
which incurs more initial
investment
• It requires more land to build.
elevated structures.
• It runs only on electricity.
• It can carry 1000 passengers
at a time.
• It does not require elevated
structure as it runs on rails as
well as road, without
disturbing the traffic on road.
• It does not require more land,
as rails will be laid on the
road itself.
• It runs on electricity as well as
solar energy.
• it can carry 1200-1400
passengers at a time.
• As subway of straddling bus
will force the traffic to move
in a platoon.
• Improper traffic light monitoring
system
• Wide roads not available in many
areas
• People's carelessness and
unawareness in following traffic
rules
• Maintenance problems
• Poor road conditions
• Government’s unwillingness
towards new transit system and
keep spending on conventional
transit system
• Lack of co-ordination in different
departments
Challenges Solutions
• Central and efficient traffic
monitoring by traffic control
agencies
• Construction of wide and efficient
roads
• Awareness campaigns for people
and imposing heavy fines for
breaking rules
• Central maintenance department
can coordinate with PWD to
maintain roads
• A separate central department to
look after all the maintenance
problems of the bus system and
will be under direct control of
higher authorities
• Setting up a separate head of the
all departments to control and co-
ordinate effectively
24
25
Conclusion
*It runs above car and under overpass,
saves road space.
*It uses electric and solar power reduces
the air pollution
*It reduces up to 20-30 % of traffic jams
*It is safe, efficient and has high capacity.
26
Appendix
*The straddling bus was first exhibited on the 13th Beijing
International High-Tech Expo.
*The basic idea was proposed by Shenzhen Hashi.
