Subject: Letter of Transmittal for the LFE Report, Spring’18
Dear Sir,
With due respect, I would like to inform that I am Rafinur Tajin, want to submit my Live-
in Field-Experience (LFE) report. This was an observational study, conducted during 23rd
April to May 1st of 2018 for the course LFE-201 on our field venue in Dinajpur. It was
organized by Independent University, Bangladesh and BRAC Learning Center, Dinajpur
(BLC).
I did my fieldwork and prepared the report based on the data collected from the villagers
of Jaliyapara village which is situated in the area of Mostafabad in Dinajpur district
through questionnaire survey, observation methods and group discussion, I tried my best
to learn about the demography, geography, rural life, usages of media, women
empowerment, market analysis, education, health issues and technological progress of
these village. This was an enormous experience for me and I have learnt a lot about the
culture, beliefs and custom of the village people.
I, therefore, hoping for your kind consideration on my report if there are any mistakes.
Sincerely
Rafinur Tajin

I would like to thank Independent University, Bangladesh for giving such a wonderful
and unique course through which we get the chance to learn and experience about a rural
village of Bangladesh. It will certainly have a life time impact on me and I would always
be looking for opportunities to do something for our poor villagers. This short but long
lasting LFE program has shown me the other side of the world, which I would not have
seen otherwise. Even it helps me to get closer to practical knowledge rather than bookish
knowledge. Now I feel I have more responsibility towards our country and village people
who have always been our strong hands. For making this program successful one, I
would like to thank the following person from the bottom of my heart.
First, I would like to thank Honorable Coordinator Mr. Anwar Zahid and other faculty
members Mr. Yusuf Mallik & Mr. Readul Mahmud and also our five monitors,
Ishaq Shahriar Pulock, Masud Rana, Tanjila Afreen, Eshrat Jahan Era and Asfer Ahmed.
Without their help and guidance, we could not be able to complete the LFE study as well
as report properly. we are grateful to them for helping all groups and thankful for
providing us valuable advice about the LFE study and report. Their overwhelming
support helps me to make a complete LFE report. Without the constant help and guidance
of our assigned LFE monitors, the study would not have been this thorough. We also owe
many thanks to BLC staffs, the most hospitable people. we are grateful to them in every
way possible.

Memories That Won’t Be Forgotten
Before I start the formal approach
of my report and boring
analyzation, I think I should share
some good memories.
On 23rd of April the journey of
LFE began and packed up on 2nd
May of 2018. This 9 days was the greatest experience of my life. Though at first the work
pressure made us to think that LFE is tough but when we made a routine life and worked
with great guidance from our faculties, LFE turned into more enjoyable. After 5 days of
village survey, 4 days of extra-curricular activities & outing made our hard works
worthy. We stayed in BRAC Learning Centre (BLC) and the total facility was marvelous.
The whole facility was covered with nicely built gardens, separate hostel, office,
auditorium and dining hall buildings. The place itself was so beautiful that I wished to
stay there for some more days. We had so many memories in this place. Every students
and faculty and monitor members were like family to each other. Every day we finished
our meals at very sharp scheduled time but that was fun too. Because starting of meeting
new people and new minds took place on those dining tables. Beside our survey
whenever we got time, we played together, gossiped together and in fact made plans for
the days together, but most of them were unknown to me when the journey of LFE
started. I still mesmerize the strictness of our faculties, brotherly behave from the
monitors and every activity with my LFE friends. My room mates were also too much
friendly that we enjoyed every night gossiping so many stories. We also spent time with
our neighbor roommates playing card games and gossiping.

Every day we woke up at 6.30 and finished our breakfast by
7.30 and from 8 am we started to visit the villages for
surveying. Fortunately, the village I visited was the best
location with friendly behaved villagers. When I first went
Jaliyapara village, I thought it would be very tough to find
the households because my expectation from the villagers
was very low. But luckily, I met the best people of that
village and they helped us to locate other households. I still
remember that one old lady walked with us to find a man
whom we were searching for hours. Generosity of some villagers fascinated me a lot.
Some families offered us food and told us to stay a little bit as the weather was too sunny
out there. Though they lead average lifestyle. Their hospitality was remembering.
Children of that village were also so generous and
cordial. In fact, the last day of surveying we played a
friendly cricket match with those kids.
Beside all of these formal works & surveys, we
arranged cultural events and sports program. I
participated in cricket match and my team was Mr.
Anwar Zahid sir’s “Team Khela Hobe” & we
became the champion of cricket tournament. There were other games like ludu, musical
chair. We also did bonfire night and had BBQ chicken straight out of flame.

Weather of Dinajpur was too sunny when we were on
to our surveys but when we planned to travel around
the district, rain was our constant companion.
Accompanied by heavy rainfall, we visited Hili border
and Shopnopuri Amusement Park. Final day of LFE
was sunny and we visited the most beautiful place of
Dinajpur, Ramsagor Ecological Park. Hili was the
border side of Bangladesh. That is why too many foreign product markets were built
beside the border. I bought chocolates as the price was reasonable. Shopnopuri was not
my kind of location. But that was a nice place too. I want to mention that Ramsagor was
the most beautiful place. This area is actually a huge water body surrounded by huge
amount of greenery. We passed best moments there of our whole LFE.
Overall in my opinion, LFE was the best experience of my life and it was also my first
outside Dhaka working experience. The knowledge I learnt from this whole course and
survey will be remembered and I will apply those lessons in my entire life.
That’s all from my overall experience from this whole journey. Now let’s dive into the
formal study. I know it will be boring but it is a report and we have to maintain the
outlines.

Introduction
“One really needs to live in and see a village community to get the true picture of the
people and their life.”
I was aware of how true this claim would prove to be. We all had a preconceived idea of
rural life, our ideas purely based on books we had read and moves we had seen. So this
course was a true revelation; it was our encounter with the reality of rural life. I gained a
varied set of experience during my visit to the village Jaliyapara of Mostofabad area in
Dinajpur. In this report I have tried to depict the most enlightening details that these
experiences have taught me. We all were divided into groups; each group was consisting
of 2 members for surveying.
Though there has been a high degree of urbanization and industrialization in the recent
past, the majority of Bangladesh is still rural and agrarian. More than 60% of the
population depends on agriculture for sustenance and employment. The intensive
migration of the rural population to the urban areas due to unemployment and low
standards of living has resulted in unemployment problems in the urban areas as well as.
Moreover, now-a-days literacy scale is higher in rural areas than past decades. Even,
more conscious about health and hygiene and these positive sign; I found during my
survey. In order to improve the current conditions, it is obligatory to learn about their
actual problems. Consequently, the study of rural life has been essential for every citizen
of Bangladesh.
This LFE course has not yet been offered by any other university in Bangladesh. As IUB
aims at developing leadership qualities among the students with the view to serving the
nation and humanity at large, this 3 credits course of Live-In-Field-Experience (LFE) has
been made compulsory for its students irrespective of their subject of concentration.

Executive Summary
Dinajpur, the district of fruits and rice. Jaliyapara village of Mostafabad area can be the
symbol of the crop enrichment of Dinajpur. But having great landscapes, high amount of
crops cultivations and fruit gardens, Jaliyapara cannot be a model village. Because most
of the family’s economic condition is below standard. Poverty is very common for the
people of that village. Conservative mind is the main barrier of women empowerment of
Jaliyapara village. Though child education is increasing day by day but dropout rate is
also going higher. Due to having lean steps to develop this rural area, technology is
forbidden here. Though cultivation has gotten modern touch but lifestyle has no luxury to
use tech gadgets or tech services.
We will try to give some mitigation suggestions for improving current situations and also
will discuss what is happening in this particular rural area and what are the reasons
behind those problems.
Objective of The Study
The main idea of LFE is to familiarize the students with the socio-economic realities of
rural Bangladesh. Since we, the students of IUB, are going to the leaders of tomorrow,
we must know about the lifestyle of the majority of the people. Or else we will be making
decisions based upon urban problems and needs only. This will deteriorate the socio-
economic development of this country.
Keeping this situation in mind, IUB has designed this unique course to make us aware of
rural problems and needs. Through this study we were expected to learn about the
population dynamics, undeveloped resource base, low level of education and poor
management attempts both at national and local levels.
From this study my focus will be on:
 Village Mapping
 Rural Economy
 Women Empowerment
 Technological Advancements
 Suggestions to improve current situations

Methodology
Our whole survey was based on some household and adult questionnaire data. We made
group of two members and we were assigned 10 households to locate and to interview
them to complete our survey. Unfortunately, one household was missing from that area
and we completed our survey collecting data from 9 households. My main source of this
report are mainly those data. We collected them by:
 Physically visiting the village (Jaliyapara, Mostofabad)
 Locating households and collecting necessary datas by interviewing household
members
 Talking with other villagers for some additional data
 Observing development works and infrastructures around the village
Village Mapping
Jaliyapara village of Mostafabad isn’t a huge village but density of population is high.
Households are built like they are attached with each other. Muslim society and Hindu
society live two opposite side of this village. This village has a mosque and a primary
school which was built by the
funding of Asian Development
Bank. This village is surrounded
with paddy fields and corn
fields. There were two very
small lychee and mango gardens.
There is no water body in this
village. Detailed landmarks and
our located 9 households are
pointed in the map.

Village Observation & Analyzing Data
Jaliyapra village is a very small part of Mostofabad area. Most of the people of this
village work from dawn to dusk to earn some foods and some money to continue their
lives. Struggling scenario is very common in this village. We can’t realize how much
poverty or burden they have in their life when you see smiling faces of school going
children. Though some of the families lead average life styles but we can’t judge the
overall village by them. We discussed about those problems in our daily presentation and
discussion while staying in BLC. We made some hand drawn slides and focused on the
key facts and current situation of that village. We worked on specific problems and topics
each day of our LFE journey.
My main focus of discussion is rural economic condition, women empowerment and
technological advancements of Jaliyapara. I’ve given light to these topics because I think
these matters should be discussed to make development plans for this community. We are
living in 21st century and going with the flow of development all around the country, but
it can’t be a standardized practice if we neglect this rural community.
Note: Though we were assigned to deal with 10 households, but we analyzed the
village scenario as a team of 5 groups dealing with 50 families. The whole discussion
and observation will be based on those 50 households condition and will try to sense
the overall condition of Jaliyapara village. Percentages are rounded for better
calculation.

 Rural Economy
Rural economy refers to the economic condition of a rural area considering
people’s earning and spending ratios, contribution, livelihood types and amount of
assets.
To discuss about the rural economy of Jaliyapara, I categorized this term in
contribution of males & females, earning range, spending type and range,
livelihood types and assets & savings.
 Earning contribution: 82% males & 18 % females are contributing for
their families. It’s common to see male members working for their family
but overall economic condition of most of the families is so bad that
female members are also in the field of work beside the male members.
 Earning range: Most of the families earning range is between 5k-10k
taka per month. Only 28% families earn between 10k-20k taka per month.
Some families consist of more than 5 members. So, it is hard for them to
lead their life within this low income. The reason behind their low earning
range is because of education and having no interest of working outside
for better jobs and also labor wages is very low in this certain area.
 Spending: The main spending sector of every family is food, medicine &
health services and education. 67% families spend below 5k taka and 33%
families spend more than 5k taka for food cost per month. As most of the
families have no major illness, so 87% families spend less than 1000tk per
month for medicine and health services. We found a good thing that every
family is sending their children to primary school because primary
education cost is very cheap and sometimes it’s free.
 Livelihood types: 65% villagers have taken farming labor as their main
profession. They work on others land and get wages for their work on
daily basis or sometimes seasonal basis. 30% villagers earning source
depends on their own cultivatable lands and crops. 5% villager’s main
profession are car driver, shop owner, guards etc. Beside the main
profession 70% villagers do day laboring & household jobs as their side
14 | P a g e
profession. 20% villagers have alternative income source by selling fruits
(mango, lychee) from their gardens and also from livestock.
 Assets & Savings: Most of the villagers have no land of their own. But
the good thing is they have their own houses and they live in it. Some
households are made of mud which is seen mostly in Hindu families and
some households are made of bricks and tin. Some villagers have lands
but the amount is very low. Almost every villager has livestock like cows,
goats and chickens.
We found most of the villagers have no saving for their future. Local
people said that it’s not possible to save after feeding their families as the
income rate is so low. But some families have short savings like “Somiti”.
They put 100-500tk to some organizations or multipurpose societies
monthly and get little amount of interest after a certain period.
From above study of rural economy of Jaliyapara, it can be said that overall
economic condition of this particular village is not that good. No savings for
future life, having very less amount of assets are the big issues in this village.

 Women Empowerment
Women empowerment is the right of women as equal as the men in the field of
working, decision making, education, freedom etc.
To understand the current women empowerment situation in Jaliyapara, I chosed
to discuss about rate of working women, female literacy rate, decision making &
freedom of movement and some sensitive issue like early marriage & dowry.
These studies can give us some ideas of the current condition of women
empowerment in Jaliyapara village.
 Rate of working women: 82% women of Jaliyapara are housewives. The
reason behind the high rate of housewives are actually conservative minds
and religious aspects. Most of the families don’t let their female members
to work outside. Again 18% working women are not going out for
working willingly. Their economic condition is so bad that they have to
work beside the male members of their family.
 Literacy rate: We found in most of the families that the female members
are more educated than the male members. But the level of education isn’t
that high. 60% of them have completed primary education. The reasons
behind not going for further education are marriage and helping in
household works. 25% went for high school. We found one girl who is
studying in university. But that’s a rare case. Surprisingly only 10%
female have no institutional education. It’s good to have minimal
education than nothing. But currently parents are more concern and they
are sending their female children to schools which is a good initiative.
Some little girls with

break; Mostafabad

16 | P a g e
 Decision making & Freedom of movement: Our observation says that
most of the families prioritize elder female members decisions. They
contribute in making decision about their children, economic and
household matters. They also prioritize their female children’s demands in
their limit.
Women can move around the village and if necessary, they are permitted
to go out of the village too. As most of the family’s economic condition
isn’t stable enough, so they can’t afford any luxury item or high
demanding things for their female members, but they are happy with what
they have.
 Early Marriage & Dowry: 95% married women of this village had early
marriage. The reason behind this practice is ignorance to women child.
This practice was established till 4/5 years ago also. But currently that
scenario has changed. Younger women are now getting married at the
right age. 5% married women had their marriage in right time.
Dowry is a common issue in this particular village. They don’t take it as a
crime. In fact, they think it as gifts and they are proud of it. We haven’t
seen any extreme case due to dowry in this village. Dowry has become a
common practice and a tradition.
 Family planning: We all know that most of the villages of our country
are male dominated. Jaliyapara is also not out of them. But most of the
male members support female members and they are concern about birth
rate. So, women are getting priority to have kids or not. Concept of family
planning is finely established and it has a good impact on total birth
control of this particular area.
From above study, we can understand that women empowerment is kind of average in
this area having no serious issues. We can’t comment on the low rate of working women
because women of this village are actually not interested in working outside and they are
happy with their families and they enjoy their lives.
17 | P a g e
 TechnologicalAdvancements
Technological advancement doesn’t mean high tech developments, it means the
overall progress of an area’s technology spreading and knowledge of minimal
technological terms.
Jaliyapara has lack of total technological progress. This discussion will focus on
this area’s electricity coverage, use of devices in daily life, mobile phone access,
internet service, mobile banking and farming technologies.
 Electricity coverage: Jaliyapara village is fully electrified. The supplier
of current flow is PDB. Households have digital electric meter and they
have to pay very little amount of bill for electricity as most of the
households have less electric devices and rooms. But this village hasn’t
gotten interaction less current lines. Daily the village face 3/4 load
shedding. Villagers suffer from heat in summer season and insecurity in
nigh time during load shedding.
 Use of device in daily life: Villagers are used to mobile phones but
smartphones haven’t spread vastly in this locality. They mostly
comfortable with Symbian handsets. Most of the families have no
television and refrigerators. In fact, they don’t have classic radios. Their
entertainment medium is limited. 1 or 2 families have TVs and
refrigerators as their economic condition is stable. Village shops have
radios for listening news and sport coverage. They like interacting with
each other more than interacting with the recent devices.
 Mobile phone access: Every family has mobile phones. But not every
member of a family has access to mobile phones. Some old persons have
no knowledge about mobile phones like calling or reading messages.
Mainly household heads and earning persons have access to mobile
phones and from them their wives and other elder members can use
mobiles if necessary.
 Internet: People of this village are not used to internet services. They
don’t have any interest on internet and they never tried it also. Another
18 | P a g e
thing this village has no broadband connection but has mobile internet.
Some young people use internet but it’s very rare. The percentage of using
internet is just 5% and browsing types are mainly music and facebook.
 Mobile banking: 85% villagers are not used to mobile banking as they
said they don’t need it. But 15% villagers use mobile banking system and
the most popular service is bKash. They use mobile banking services for
sending and receiving money. The annual average rate of transaction
through mobile banking is almost 4000tk. As they don’t use mobile
banking often, so the transaction rate is low. Again, considering their
economic condition, it is easily understandable why they are taking less
mobile banking services.
 Farming technology: Modern technologies and procedures of farming
have been introduced to this locality. Modern farming tools, techniques
and technologies refer to the usage of chemical fertilizer or processed
organic fertilizer, pesticides, high quality of seeds, hybrid type of crops,
modern farming machines like shallow machines, power tiller & tractors
and government’s contribution in the progress of farming sectors. 75%
people are using modern technologies in farming. 25% are following
traditional procedures like plowing with cattle and harvesting crops with
sickles etc.
Technological advancements haven’t gone that far in this particular area. Technology’s
advantages and basic concepts aren’t spread that much and it’s the main reason of falling
back of this locality and authority who are in charge of taking care of these matters are
responsible for this situation.
Use of modern techniques and machines in agricultural land
19 | P a g e
Improvement Plans for Current Situation
We know that northern part of Bangladesh has some issues and poverty is the constant
companion of this area. Jaliyapara, Mostafabad is also suffering from lots of problems.
Economic condition is mostly below average and technological advancements haven’t
spread much. Due to conservative minds and religious aspects with having less interest in
working outside, women empowerment hasn’t established yet.
To change this situation or to improve this phenomenon, some plans are suggested below:
 Rural Economy:
 As manpower is cheap here, it should be utilized and should arrange better
training for the people to make them more skillful. Then this manpower
can be sent to abroad and this will play very good role in developing their
economic condition.
 Daily wages of local labors should be increased and the local authority
should take care of this issue.
 NGOs and govt. organizations should come forward to help the local
people by decreasing loan rates.
 Livestock and fishery farming utilities, animals, small carp/fishes can be
provided to the unemployed people and housewives by govt. and NGOs.
 As the crops and fruits price in this area is very cheap, the farmers are not
benefited what they earn by selling them. So, business magnets and other
controlling authorities should make direct link with these primary
producers and can change their luck by giving good amount of goods
price.
 More industries and factories (with the permission of environment
department) should be established to bring luck to this township. If this
happen, more people can join these factories and can accelerate their
economic condition by earning decent amount of salary.
20 | P a g e
 Women Empowerment:
 Women of this village have less interest in doing outside work and also
their families won’t accept it. But they can contribute to their families by
sewing clothes & handicrafts in their home.
 NGOs & govt. organizations should arrange awareness training about
health and education in this village frequently.
 To control birth rate, health workers should be more active and spread
serious concern about his issue among the villagers.
 Adhering authorities should arrange awareness programs for male
members also to teach them how to give priority to girl child and women.
 Awareness about dowry & early marriage should be spread. Active
organizations should give more courage to the local women against dowry
and early marriage. Frequent visit by local women rights control
authorities should be increased.
 Technological Advancements:
 Living in the era of digitalization, having no knowledge of internet and
current technological progress is unbelievable. Govt. organizations and
NGOs should be more active to spread these knowledges so that this
township won’t fall back in the current flow of development.
 Telecom companies should come forward to ensure internet coverage and
chip mobile service for this area.
 Usages of helplines is almost nil in this area. But for emergency cases like
health, accident or for any information like farming, education, weather
update etc., helpline is needed. This awareness should be raised among the
villagers.
 As the economic condition of this area isn’t that good, so money
transaction rate is very low. That’s why mobile banking rate is also low.
But they should be provided this information if they need this for any
circumstances.
21 | P a g e
 As not all can afford electric devices like TVs, 2/3 common tv place
should be made by the authority to update them with current condition of
country and to inform the news & other entertainment options.
We can’t expect mass development on our discussed topics overnight. But we can hope
for the primary development of these things. The suggested solutions are just the basic
improvement plans. Though our overall development went much ahead than this local
area, but if the suggested plans are implanted perfectly, the starting of mass improvement
will be accelerated. Proper implementation of plan is needed and the govt. and NGOs
should take drastic steps to bright this part of Bangladesh.
Limitations & Scopes
To study about human lives and their lifestyle types, village is the right place to observe
all these things. Jaliyapara village was my study area. I didn’t find that much limitation
here to study or to survey. But I want to mention one thing that, female members of this
village are mostly shy and uncomfortable to talk with the surveyors. Convincing power
can unlock their mind and if they feel easy, then they will answer your questions.
Another thing the questionnaires provided for survey can’t always fulfill the answer of
what we are looking for. Suppose if we consider technological advancement sector, most
of the relevant questions about technology like usage of technology in daily life and
agriculture aren’t added in the forms. So, we had to observe out of the box and made
assumptions about the overall condition of the village.
Talking about scopes, I found a lot of work scopes in this particular area. If you are
interested to know about people, door of scopes is opened in this sector. For LFE survey
we were given some fixed topics but you can analyze other things like seasonal changes
and crops production systems etc. of this area. We can study about the environmental
changes throughout the year of this particular part of Bangladesh. We can find out the
contribution of local NGOs and political influences on this area. So, there are lots of
scopes of study in LFE. Our thirst of knowledge can be fulfilled by these studies.
22 | P a g e
Conclusion
LFE has given us a chance to know human lives of rural parts of Bangladesh. We are
learning the structure of our rural societies, their lifestyles, economic conditions, public
health from our studies & surveys of LFE. Involving in LFE also introduced us the
struggle of life. Walking on streets and taking people’s interview made us realize that it’s
not easy to achieve goals in life without traveling every span of life. LFE gave us a
family, a family of students, teachers and brothers-sisters. LFE taught us team
management and helped us to improve our communication skills.
In future, we all will be involved into many job sectors and organizations. As a fresher,
we will have only university degree without empty hand of experience. But LFE gave us
the experiences of working outside or working in any condition. Demanding skills of
every organizations are leadership, team management, technical skills. LFE taught us
everything. Punctuality and schedule maintaining skills are learned from LFE. So, LFE
gave us the experiences we need for our future.
LFE can’t be successful without the overall coordination by our faculties. Their guidance
made us to realize the value of work. We couldn’t complete our tasks without their
fulltime observation over us. I’m grateful to my respected faculties for giving us this
opportunity.
Some last words, the village I visited (Jaliyapara, Mostafabad) has given me a lot of
lessons for my future life. I have learned so many skills from them like activeness for
working and patience in every condition. Their cordialness fascinates me still now.
Maybe they are stoned by sufferings but they are bloomed with flowers in their hearts.
From everything I learned from LFE, I will always say that “LFE is the definition of
experience”.

Rural Life Insights from Field Experience

  • 1. 1 | P a g e Independent University, Bangladesh Report on “ Live-In-Field Experience, Spring ‘18, BLC (Dinajpur) ” Course ID: LFE 201 Course Title: Live In Field Experience Section: 08 Prepared By: Date of Submission: 30 / 05 / 18 Topic Name: 1. Rural Economy 2. Women Empowerment 3. Technological Advancements Group number # 03 Name: Rafinur Tajin ID: 1410356
  • 2. 2 | P a g e Anwar Zahid Lecturer Department of Finance School of Business Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) Subject: Letter of Transmittal for the LFE Report, Spring’18 Dear Sir, With due respect, I would like to inform that I am Rafinur Tajin, want to submit my Live- in Field-Experience (LFE) report. This was an observational study, conducted during 23rd April to May 1st of 2018 for the course LFE-201 on our field venue in Dinajpur. It was organized by Independent University, Bangladesh and BRAC Learning Center, Dinajpur (BLC). I did my fieldwork and prepared the report based on the data collected from the villagers of Jaliyapara village which is situated in the area of Mostafabad in Dinajpur district through questionnaire survey, observation methods and group discussion, I tried my best to learn about the demography, geography, rural life, usages of media, women empowerment, market analysis, education, health issues and technological progress of these village. This was an enormous experience for me and I have learnt a lot about the culture, beliefs and custom of the village people. I, therefore, hoping for your kind consideration on my report if there are any mistakes. Sincerely Rafinur Tajin Student Department of Computer Science & Engineering, SECS
  • 3. 3 | P a g e Acknowledgement I would like to thank Independent University, Bangladesh for giving such a wonderful and unique course through which we get the chance to learn and experience about a rural village of Bangladesh. It will certainly have a life time impact on me and I would always be looking for opportunities to do something for our poor villagers. This short but long lasting LFE program has shown me the other side of the world, which I would not have seen otherwise. Even it helps me to get closer to practical knowledge rather than bookish knowledge. Now I feel I have more responsibility towards our country and village people who have always been our strong hands. For making this program successful one, I would like to thank the following person from the bottom of my heart. First, I would like to thank Honorable Coordinator Mr. Anwar Zahid and other faculty members Mr. Yusuf Mallik & Mr. Readul Mahmud and also our five monitors, Ishaq Shahriar Pulock, Masud Rana, Tanjila Afreen, Eshrat Jahan Era and Asfer Ahmed. Without their help and guidance, we could not be able to complete the LFE study as well as report properly. we are grateful to them for helping all groups and thankful for providing us valuable advice about the LFE study and report. Their overwhelming support helps me to make a complete LFE report. Without the constant help and guidance of our assigned LFE monitors, the study would not have been this thorough. We also owe many thanks to BLC staffs, the most hospitable people. we are grateful to them in every way possible.
  • 4. 4 | P a g e Memories That Won’t Be Forgotten Before I start the formal approach of my report and boring analyzation, I think I should share some good memories. On 23rd of April the journey of LFE began and packed up on 2nd May of 2018. This 9 days was the greatest experience of my life. Though at first the work pressure made us to think that LFE is tough but when we made a routine life and worked with great guidance from our faculties, LFE turned into more enjoyable. After 5 days of village survey, 4 days of extra-curricular activities & outing made our hard works worthy. We stayed in BRAC Learning Centre (BLC) and the total facility was marvelous. The whole facility was covered with nicely built gardens, separate hostel, office, auditorium and dining hall buildings. The place itself was so beautiful that I wished to stay there for some more days. We had so many memories in this place. Every students and faculty and monitor members were like family to each other. Every day we finished our meals at very sharp scheduled time but that was fun too. Because starting of meeting new people and new minds took place on those dining tables. Beside our survey whenever we got time, we played together, gossiped together and in fact made plans for the days together, but most of them were unknown to me when the journey of LFE started. I still mesmerize the strictness of our faculties, brotherly behave from the monitors and every activity with my LFE friends. My room mates were also too much friendly that we enjoyed every night gossiping so many stories. We also spent time with our neighbor roommates playing card games and gossiping. • 5. 5 | P a g e Every day we woke up at 6.30 and finished our breakfast by 7.30 and from 8 am we started to visit the villages for surveying. Fortunately, the village I visited was the best location with friendly behaved villagers. When I first went Jaliyapara village, I thought it would be very tough to find the households because my expectation from the villagers was very low. But luckily, I met the best people of that village and they helped us to locate other households. I still remember that one old lady walked with us to find a man whom we were searching for hours. Generosity of some villagers fascinated me a lot. Some families offered us food and told us to stay a little bit as the weather was too sunny out there. Though they lead average lifestyle. Their hospitality was remembering. Children of that village were also so generous and cordial. In fact, the last day of surveying we played a friendly cricket match with those kids. Beside all of these formal works & surveys, we arranged cultural events and sports program. I participated in cricket match and my team was Mr. Anwar Zahid sir’s “Team Khela Hobe” & we became the champion of cricket tournament. There were other games like ludu, musical chair. We also did bonfire night and had BBQ chicken straight out of flame. Selfie with the littlecricket champs Me, Hittinga boundary in slip Bonfire & BBQ Cultural Event
  • 6. 6 | P a g e Weather of Dinajpur was too sunny when we were on to our surveys but when we planned to travel around the district, rain was our constant companion. Accompanied by heavy rainfall, we visited Hili border and Shopnopuri Amusement Park. Final day of LFE was sunny and we visited the most beautiful place of Dinajpur, Ramsagor Ecological Park. Hili was the border side of Bangladesh. That is why too many foreign product markets were built beside the border. I bought chocolates as the price was reasonable. Shopnopuri was not my kind of location. But that was a nice place too. I want to mention that Ramsagor was the most beautiful place. This area is actually a huge water body surrounded by huge amount of greenery. We passed best moments there of our whole LFE. Overall in my opinion, LFE was the best experience of my life and it was also my first outside Dhaka working experience. The knowledge I learnt from this whole course and survey will be remembered and I will apply those lessons in my entire life. That’s all from my overall experience from this whole journey. Now let’s dive into the formal study. I know it will be boring but it is a report and we have to maintain the outlines. Hili LandPort Bypass Ramsagor Ecological Park

  • 8. 8 | P a g e Introduction “One really needs to live in and see a village community to get the true picture of the people and their life.” I was aware of how true this claim would prove to be. We all had a preconceived idea of rural life, our ideas purely based on books we had read and moves we had seen. So this course was a true revelation; it was our encounter with the reality of rural life. I gained a varied set of experience during my visit to the village Jaliyapara of Mostofabad area in Dinajpur. In this report I have tried to depict the most enlightening details that these experiences have taught me. We all were divided into groups; each group was consisting of 2 members for surveying. Though there has been a high degree of urbanization and industrialization in the recent past, the majority of Bangladesh is still rural and agrarian. More than 60% of the population depends on agriculture for sustenance and employment. The intensive migration of the rural population to the urban areas due to unemployment and low standards of living has resulted in unemployment problems in the urban areas as well as. Moreover, now-a-days literacy scale is higher in rural areas than past decades. Even, more conscious about health and hygiene and these positive sign; I found during my survey. In order to improve the current conditions, it is obligatory to learn about their actual problems. Consequently, the study of rural life has been essential for every citizen of Bangladesh. This LFE course has not yet been offered by any other university in Bangladesh. As IUB aims at developing leadership qualities among the students with the view to serving the nation and humanity at large, this 3 credits course of Live-In-Field-Experience (LFE) has been made compulsory for its students irrespective of their subject of concentration.
  • 9. 9 | P a g e Executive Summary Dinajpur, the district of fruits and rice. Jaliyapara village of Mostafabad area can be the symbol of the crop enrichment of Dinajpur. But having great landscapes, high amount of crops cultivations and fruit gardens, Jaliyapara cannot be a model village. Because most of the family’s economic condition is below standard. Poverty is very common for the people of that village. Conservative mind is the main barrier of women empowerment of Jaliyapara village. Though child education is increasing day by day but dropout rate is also going higher. Due to having lean steps to develop this rural area, technology is forbidden here. Though cultivation has gotten modern touch but lifestyle has no luxury to use tech gadgets or tech services. We will try to give some mitigation suggestions for improving current situations and also will discuss what is happening in this particular rural area and what are the reasons behind those problems. Objective of The Study The main idea of LFE is to familiarize the students with the socio-economic realities of rural Bangladesh. Since we, the students of IUB, are going to the leaders of tomorrow, we must know about the lifestyle of the majority of the people. Or else we will be making decisions based upon urban problems and needs only. This will deteriorate the socio- economic development of this country. Keeping this situation in mind, IUB has designed this unique course to make us aware of rural problems and needs. Through this study we were expected to learn about the population dynamics, undeveloped resource base, low level of education and poor management attempts both at national and local levels. From this study my focus will be on:  Village Mapping  Rural Economy  Women Empowerment  Technological Advancements  Suggestions to improve current situations
  • 10. 10 | P a g e Methodology Our whole survey was based on some household and adult questionnaire data. We made group of two members and we were assigned 10 households to locate and to interview them to complete our survey. Unfortunately, one household was missing from that area and we completed our survey collecting data from 9 households. My main source of this report are mainly those data. We collected them by:  Physically visiting the village (Jaliyapara, Mostofabad)  Locating households and collecting necessary datas by interviewing household members  Talking with other villagers for some additional data  Observing development works and infrastructures around the village Village Mapping Jaliyapara village of Mostafabad isn’t a huge village but density of population is high. Households are built like they are attached with each other. Muslim society and Hindu society live two opposite side of this village. This village has a mosque and a primary school which was built by the funding of Asian Development Bank. This village is surrounded with paddy fields and corn fields. There were two very small lychee and mango gardens. There is no water body in this village. Detailed landmarks and our located 9 households are pointed in the map. Hand Drawn Map of Jaliyapara

  • 12. 12 | P a g e Village Observation & Analyzing Data Jaliyapra village is a very small part of Mostofabad area. Most of the people of this village work from dawn to dusk to earn some foods and some money to continue their lives. Struggling scenario is very common in this village. We can’t realize how much poverty or burden they have in their life when you see smiling faces of school going children. Though some of the families lead average life styles but we can’t judge the overall village by them. We discussed about those problems in our daily presentation and discussion while staying in BLC. We made some hand drawn slides and focused on the key facts and current situation of that village. We worked on specific problems and topics each day of our LFE journey. My main focus of discussion is rural economic condition, women empowerment and technological advancements of Jaliyapara. I’ve given light to these topics because I think these matters should be discussed to make development plans for this community. We are living in 21st century and going with the flow of development all around the country, but it can’t be a standardized practice if we neglect this rural community. Note: Though we were assigned to deal with 10 households, but we analyzed the village scenario as a team of 5 groups dealing with 50 families. The whole discussion and observation will be based on those 50 households condition and will try to sense the overall condition of Jaliyapara village. Percentages are rounded for better calculation. • 13. 13 | P a g e  Rural Economy Rural economy refers to the economic condition of a rural area considering people’s earning and spending ratios, contribution, livelihood types and amount of assets. To discuss about the rural economy of Jaliyapara, I categorized this term in contribution of males & females, earning range, spending type and range, livelihood types and assets & savings.  Earning contribution: 82% males & 18 % females are contributing for their families. It’s common to see male members working for their family but overall economic condition of most of the families is so bad that female members are also in the field of work beside the male members.  Earning range: Most of the families earning range is between 5k-10k taka per month. Only 28% families earn between 10k-20k taka per month. Some families consist of more than 5 members. So, it is hard for them to lead their life within this low income. The reason behind their low earning range is because of education and having no interest of working outside for better jobs and also labor wages is very low in this certain area.  Spending: The main spending sector of every family is food, medicine & health services and education. 67% families spend below 5k taka and 33% families spend more than 5k taka for food cost per month. As most of the families have no major illness, so 87% families spend less than 1000tk per month for medicine and health services. We found a good thing that every family is sending their children to primary school because primary education cost is very cheap and sometimes it’s free.  Livelihood types: 65% villagers have taken farming labor as their main profession. They work on others land and get wages for their work on daily basis or sometimes seasonal basis. 30% villagers earning source depends on their own cultivatable lands and crops. 5% villager’s main profession are car driver, shop owner, guards etc. Beside the main profession 70% villagers do day laboring & household jobs as their side
  • 14. 14 | P a g e profession. 20% villagers have alternative income source by selling fruits (mango, lychee) from their gardens and also from livestock.  Assets & Savings: Most of the villagers have no land of their own. But the good thing is they have their own houses and they live in it. Some households are made of mud which is seen mostly in Hindu families and some households are made of bricks and tin. Some villagers have lands but the amount is very low. Almost every villager has livestock like cows, goats and chickens. We found most of the villagers have no saving for their future. Local people said that it’s not possible to save after feeding their families as the income rate is so low. But some families have short savings like “Somiti”. They put 100-500tk to some organizations or multipurpose societies monthly and get little amount of interest after a certain period. From above study of rural economy of Jaliyapara, it can be said that overall economic condition of this particular village is not that good. No savings for future life, having very less amount of assets are the big issues in this village. Vast Paddy Fields of Jaliyapra A tin made household surrounded by mango garden
  • 15. 15 | P a g e  Women Empowerment Women empowerment is the right of women as equal as the men in the field of working, decision making, education, freedom etc. To understand the current women empowerment situation in Jaliyapara, I chosed to discuss about rate of working women, female literacy rate, decision making & freedom of movement and some sensitive issue like early marriage & dowry. These studies can give us some ideas of the current condition of women empowerment in Jaliyapara village.  Rate of working women: 82% women of Jaliyapara are housewives. The reason behind the high rate of housewives are actually conservative minds and religious aspects. Most of the families don’t let their female members to work outside. Again 18% working women are not going out for working willingly. Their economic condition is so bad that they have to work beside the male members of their family.  Literacy rate: We found in most of the families that the female members are more educated than the male members. But the level of education isn’t that high. 60% of them have completed primary education. The reasons behind not going for further education are marriage and helping in household works. 25% went for high school. We found one girl who is studying in university. But that’s a rare case. Surprisingly only 10% female have no institutional education. It’s good to have minimal education than nothing. But currently parents are more concern and they are sending their female children to schools which is a good initiative. Some little girls with books with theirother class mates after school break; Mostafabad private primaryschool
  • 16. 16 | P a g e  Decision making & Freedom of movement: Our observation says that most of the families prioritize elder female members decisions. They contribute in making decision about their children, economic and household matters. They also prioritize their female children’s demands in their limit. Women can move around the village and if necessary, they are permitted to go out of the village too. As most of the family’s economic condition isn’t stable enough, so they can’t afford any luxury item or high demanding things for their female members, but they are happy with what they have.  Early Marriage & Dowry: 95% married women of this village had early marriage. The reason behind this practice is ignorance to women child. This practice was established till 4/5 years ago also. But currently that scenario has changed. Younger women are now getting married at the right age. 5% married women had their marriage in right time. Dowry is a common issue in this particular village. They don’t take it as a crime. In fact, they think it as gifts and they are proud of it. We haven’t seen any extreme case due to dowry in this village. Dowry has become a common practice and a tradition.  Family planning: We all know that most of the villages of our country are male dominated. Jaliyapara is also not out of them. But most of the male members support female members and they are concern about birth rate. So, women are getting priority to have kids or not. Concept of family planning is finely established and it has a good impact on total birth control of this particular area. From above study, we can understand that women empowerment is kind of average in this area having no serious issues. We can’t comment on the low rate of working women because women of this village are actually not interested in working outside and they are happy with their families and they enjoy their lives.
  • 17. 17 | P a g e  TechnologicalAdvancements Technological advancement doesn’t mean high tech developments, it means the overall progress of an area’s technology spreading and knowledge of minimal technological terms. Jaliyapara has lack of total technological progress. This discussion will focus on this area’s electricity coverage, use of devices in daily life, mobile phone access, internet service, mobile banking and farming technologies.  Electricity coverage: Jaliyapara village is fully electrified. The supplier of current flow is PDB. Households have digital electric meter and they have to pay very little amount of bill for electricity as most of the households have less electric devices and rooms. But this village hasn’t gotten interaction less current lines. Daily the village face 3/4 load shedding. Villagers suffer from heat in summer season and insecurity in nigh time during load shedding.  Use of device in daily life: Villagers are used to mobile phones but smartphones haven’t spread vastly in this locality. They mostly comfortable with Symbian handsets. Most of the families have no television and refrigerators. In fact, they don’t have classic radios. Their entertainment medium is limited. 1 or 2 families have TVs and refrigerators as their economic condition is stable. Village shops have radios for listening news and sport coverage. They like interacting with each other more than interacting with the recent devices.  Mobile phone access: Every family has mobile phones. But not every member of a family has access to mobile phones. Some old persons have no knowledge about mobile phones like calling or reading messages. Mainly household heads and earning persons have access to mobile phones and from them their wives and other elder members can use mobiles if necessary.  Internet: People of this village are not used to internet services. They don’t have any interest on internet and they never tried it also. Another
  • 18. 18 | P a g e thing this village has no broadband connection but has mobile internet. Some young people use internet but it’s very rare. The percentage of using internet is just 5% and browsing types are mainly music and facebook.  Mobile banking: 85% villagers are not used to mobile banking as they said they don’t need it. But 15% villagers use mobile banking system and the most popular service is bKash. They use mobile banking services for sending and receiving money. The annual average rate of transaction through mobile banking is almost 4000tk. As they don’t use mobile banking often, so the transaction rate is low. Again, considering their economic condition, it is easily understandable why they are taking less mobile banking services.  Farming technology: Modern technologies and procedures of farming have been introduced to this locality. Modern farming tools, techniques and technologies refer to the usage of chemical fertilizer or processed organic fertilizer, pesticides, high quality of seeds, hybrid type of crops, modern farming machines like shallow machines, power tiller & tractors and government’s contribution in the progress of farming sectors. 75% people are using modern technologies in farming. 25% are following traditional procedures like plowing with cattle and harvesting crops with sickles etc. Technological advancements haven’t gone that far in this particular area. Technology’s advantages and basic concepts aren’t spread that much and it’s the main reason of falling back of this locality and authority who are in charge of taking care of these matters are responsible for this situation. Use of modern techniques and machines in agricultural land
  • 19. 19 | P a g e Improvement Plans for Current Situation We know that northern part of Bangladesh has some issues and poverty is the constant companion of this area. Jaliyapara, Mostafabad is also suffering from lots of problems. Economic condition is mostly below average and technological advancements haven’t spread much. Due to conservative minds and religious aspects with having less interest in working outside, women empowerment hasn’t established yet. To change this situation or to improve this phenomenon, some plans are suggested below:  Rural Economy:  As manpower is cheap here, it should be utilized and should arrange better training for the people to make them more skillful. Then this manpower can be sent to abroad and this will play very good role in developing their economic condition.  Daily wages of local labors should be increased and the local authority should take care of this issue.  NGOs and govt. organizations should come forward to help the local people by decreasing loan rates.  Livestock and fishery farming utilities, animals, small carp/fishes can be provided to the unemployed people and housewives by govt. and NGOs.  As the crops and fruits price in this area is very cheap, the farmers are not benefited what they earn by selling them. So, business magnets and other controlling authorities should make direct link with these primary producers and can change their luck by giving good amount of goods price.  More industries and factories (with the permission of environment department) should be established to bring luck to this township. If this happen, more people can join these factories and can accelerate their economic condition by earning decent amount of salary.
  • 20. 20 | P a g e  Women Empowerment:  Women of this village have less interest in doing outside work and also their families won’t accept it. But they can contribute to their families by sewing clothes & handicrafts in their home.  NGOs & govt. organizations should arrange awareness training about health and education in this village frequently.  To control birth rate, health workers should be more active and spread serious concern about his issue among the villagers.  Adhering authorities should arrange awareness programs for male members also to teach them how to give priority to girl child and women.  Awareness about dowry & early marriage should be spread. Active organizations should give more courage to the local women against dowry and early marriage. Frequent visit by local women rights control authorities should be increased.  Technological Advancements:  Living in the era of digitalization, having no knowledge of internet and current technological progress is unbelievable. Govt. organizations and NGOs should be more active to spread these knowledges so that this township won’t fall back in the current flow of development.  Telecom companies should come forward to ensure internet coverage and chip mobile service for this area.  Usages of helplines is almost nil in this area. But for emergency cases like health, accident or for any information like farming, education, weather update etc., helpline is needed. This awareness should be raised among the villagers.  As the economic condition of this area isn’t that good, so money transaction rate is very low. That’s why mobile banking rate is also low. But they should be provided this information if they need this for any circumstances.
  • 21. 21 | P a g e  As not all can afford electric devices like TVs, 2/3 common tv place should be made by the authority to update them with current condition of country and to inform the news & other entertainment options. We can’t expect mass development on our discussed topics overnight. But we can hope for the primary development of these things. The suggested solutions are just the basic improvement plans. Though our overall development went much ahead than this local area, but if the suggested plans are implanted perfectly, the starting of mass improvement will be accelerated. Proper implementation of plan is needed and the govt. and NGOs should take drastic steps to bright this part of Bangladesh. Limitations & Scopes To study about human lives and their lifestyle types, village is the right place to observe all these things. Jaliyapara village was my study area. I didn’t find that much limitation here to study or to survey. But I want to mention one thing that, female members of this village are mostly shy and uncomfortable to talk with the surveyors. Convincing power can unlock their mind and if they feel easy, then they will answer your questions. Another thing the questionnaires provided for survey can’t always fulfill the answer of what we are looking for. Suppose if we consider technological advancement sector, most of the relevant questions about technology like usage of technology in daily life and agriculture aren’t added in the forms. So, we had to observe out of the box and made assumptions about the overall condition of the village. Talking about scopes, I found a lot of work scopes in this particular area. If you are interested to know about people, door of scopes is opened in this sector. For LFE survey we were given some fixed topics but you can analyze other things like seasonal changes and crops production systems etc. of this area. We can study about the environmental changes throughout the year of this particular part of Bangladesh. We can find out the contribution of local NGOs and political influences on this area. So, there are lots of scopes of study in LFE. Our thirst of knowledge can be fulfilled by these studies.
  • 22. 22 | P a g e Conclusion LFE has given us a chance to know human lives of rural parts of Bangladesh. We are learning the structure of our rural societies, their lifestyles, economic conditions, public health from our studies & surveys of LFE. Involving in LFE also introduced us the struggle of life. Walking on streets and taking people’s interview made us realize that it’s not easy to achieve goals in life without traveling every span of life. LFE gave us a family, a family of students, teachers and brothers-sisters. LFE taught us team management and helped us to improve our communication skills. In future, we all will be involved into many job sectors and organizations. As a fresher, we will have only university degree without empty hand of experience. But LFE gave us the experiences of working outside or working in any condition. Demanding skills of every organizations are leadership, team management, technical skills. LFE taught us everything. Punctuality and schedule maintaining skills are learned from LFE. So, LFE gave us the experiences we need for our future. LFE can’t be successful without the overall coordination by our faculties. Their guidance made us to realize the value of work. We couldn’t complete our tasks without their fulltime observation over us. I’m grateful to my respected faculties for giving us this opportunity. Some last words, the village I visited (Jaliyapara, Mostafabad) has given me a lot of lessons for my future life. I have learned so many skills from them like activeness for working and patience in every condition. Their cordialness fascinates me still now. Maybe they are stoned by sufferings but they are bloomed with flowers in their hearts. From everything I learned from LFE, I will always say that “LFE is the definition of experience”.
