Undergrads find it quite challenging to document their new, innovative, breakthrough research and findings. In case, if a few get to see the set of instructions available for the writing of a research paper, most of them lack the fundamentals. This SlideShare content addresses and focuses on the fundamentals of research paper writing for undergrads.

2. The Paper Template
The Microsoft Word editable paper template file can be found and downloaded at:
https://www.ieee.org/content/dam/ieee-org/ieee/web/org/conferences/Conference-template-A4.doc
It is strongly advised to go through the template carefully, as it contains a vast set of instructions meant
for writing a paper.
3. Writing the Paper Title
The paper title must comprise words ranging from 10-13.
An example of a paper title can be seen below:
“Light Fidelity Based On-Road Communication and Market-Driven Opportunities”
4. Breakdown of the Paper
The paper usually incorporates the “Abstract”, “Introduction”, “Literature Review”, “Working”, “Results”,
and “References” in the order of preference.
At the undergrad level, the paper must contain 3,000-4,000 words (3,500 words would suffice).
Out of a maximum 4,000 words, around 300 and 1,000 words must be reserved for the “Abstract” and the
“Literature Review”, respectively.
The “Introduction” and the “Working” incl. of figure(s) must be of more than 01 page and less than 02 pages.
At least, 10 references should be cited in the “References” at the undergrad level.
5. When to Write the Abstract
Although the paper abstract appears on the top in the order of preference, it should be written in the end
after the completion of the other headings involved in the paper.
Why?
Because, an abstract provides the reader or reviewer with a gist of the research and the content of the
paper, and this can only be achieved after the completion of other sections.
Remember, around 300 words (more than 300, less than 350) are counted for the “Abstract”.
6. Writing the Literature Review
As the name implies, the “Literature Review” constitutes the previous research work supporting your
new, breakthrough research.
Supporting researches can be obtained from books, book chapters, eBooks, journal articles (print), E-Journal
articles, conference papers, reports, patents, standards, theses/dissertations, datasheets, online documents
and websites (It is recommended not to use www.wikipedia.org).
Remember, the word count for the “Literature Review” is approx. 1,000 words.
7. Citing References
The references can be cited from books, book chapters, eBooks, journal articles (print), E-Journal articles,
conference papers, reports, patents, standards, theses/dissertations, datasheets, online documents and
websites (It is recommended not to use www.wikipedia.org) using the IEEE Referencing Style.
The IEEE Style can be found at: http://bit.do/ieeestyle.
Note: In case of conflict between the information presented in the above URL and the instruction set in the
paper template under the “References”, choose the latter one, since the template is updated frequently with
correct information by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
