6. A Couple of Dragon Slaying Stories
Immediate Post-9/11 Camp
Security Operation
Situation: The situation on Okinawa on 11 SEP 01
was chaotic due to the attacks in NY and DC and
a typhoon that struck the island on 10 SEP 01.
Task: Lead platoon through company security
operation to safeguard a Marine Corps logistical base
in case of follow-on attacks.
Action: I used a systematic approach to prepare for and complete my platoon’s
portion of this operation. While my platoon sergeant briefed the Marines in the
platoon, I collected more coordinating information for the mission. The platoon
relied heavily on ongoing training which I had directed and overseen to provide
security in a safe and highly effective manner. When my platoon did security shifts,
I rotated to all the posts to get eyes on the situation and ensure the Marines had
everything they needed. I also ensured the Marines got adequate food and rest
when not on shift. After three days, we made handed over security to local camp
personnel and made an orderly return to our camp to conduct more training and
await further orders.
Result: The result was a successful security operation in which no major incidents
or injuries occurred and the company received a verbal commendation on a job
well done from the commander of the logistical base.
7. A Couple of Dragon Slaying Stories
Dissertation Research
Adjustments in the Field
Situation: Despite best efforts, I was not getting
sufficient numbers of interviews to make the target
sample size. People I trusted informed me that my
main problems stemmed from my not showing
sufficient appreciation for respondents’ time and from
distrust of outsiders because of a recent violent
Incursion by members of a drug cartel.
Task: Build better rapport with residents of the island of Roatán and collect the
needed 80 interviews.
Action: I adjusted my data collection strategy to better suit the needs and
sensitivities of island residents. On the advice of my dissertation advisor, I hired
respected community members as research assistant. Both of them advised me to
make small gifts of food to show my appreciation of respondents’ time and they
vouched for me that I was trustworthy and would safeguard confidentiality.
Result: The result was a successful field research trip in which 81 interviews took
place as part of a mixed-methods study which also yielded rich nutritional status
data and several ethnographic vignettes based on detailed observations.
8. A Couple of Dragon Slaying Stories
Leading a Manuscript on TBI
and Obesity to Publication
Situation: During my VA fellowship, I gained new
topical expertise on the relationship between traumatic
brain injury (TBI). I collaborated with the research
team at the Tampa VA Medical Center site of a
longitudinal study of TBI in Veterans.
Task: Produce dissemination deliverables such as presentations, posters, and a
peer-reviewed article in the journal Brain Injury.
Action: I employed an approach balancing patience and persistence to meet the
challenges of producing the manuscript with busy collaborators. Several prominent
TBI researchers signed on and I divided analysis and writing responsibilities. I
incorporated and edited contributions from the group over several rounds of writing
and editing. I was polite but firm in reminding contributors of deliverables and
deadlines. I completed a lengthy process to submit the article to Brain Injury.
Result: An article accepted and published in Brain Injury. I received several
congratulatory emails and a mention in the research newsletter for the Tampa VA
Medical Center.

11. Sample Solution
Boosting Sales by Capitalizing on a New Service
Capability
Situation: Between completing my PhD and
starting at the VA, I had a survival job at a local
Home Depot that included working in the
delivery section. The store where I worked was
part of a pilot program for same-day delivery
of smaller loads; it was a major opportunity to
boost store sales.
Task: Convince the store management to hire an associate primarily dedicated to
making same-day deliveries.
Action: I conducted “hip pocket” research on customer response to the new
program and concluded that adequate staffing would increase customer
satisfaction by guaranteeing same-day delivery versus having to wait on deliveries
until someone was available to deliver the items. I attended a “townhall” meeting
and made a compelling case to the store manager to hire a dedicated same-day
delivery associate.
Result: The store hired a dedicated same-day delivery associate and significantly
increased customer satisfaction and sales.
12. Sample Solution
Optimizing a Telehealth Platform (Hypothetical)
Situation: Company X is developing a new
telehealth platform and wants to ensure it is
user-friendly for clinicians and patients and still
HIPPA compliant.
Task: Assess the balance of usability and HIPPA compliance for the new telehealth
platform.
Action: Develop an evaluation plan that incorporates HIPPA compliance and a
usability study. Coordinate with developers and test the platform security
protections against HIPPA requirements. Conduct usability assessment using
observations, focus groups, and card sorts of important features to the platform.
Iterate to optimal usability. Re-check to ensure platform is still HIPPA compliant.
Ship.
Result: The new telehealth platform is HIPPA compliant, highly intuitive for
clinicians and patients, and takes Company X’s profitability and brand to the next
level.
13. Conclusion
I am a seasoned leadership and research professional ready to
take on new roles and challenges. I am actively seeking roles
in user experience research, healthcare research and program
development, or policy research and program development. My
forte is gleaning important insights from complex or messy data
to drive high-impact solutions.
