actinide complexes and uses
2. What Are Actinides?
Elements with
atomic numbers
89 to 103
Short half-lives
Radioactive
The actinides or actinoids are a
set of radioactive elements on
the periodic table, usually
considered ranging from atomic
number 89 to atomic number 103.
Actinides are sometimes called
the inner transition metals,
referring to their properties and
position on the table.
4. • Complexes in +7
Oxidation State:
- Only Np and Pu
form complexes in
+7 oxidation state
• Complexes in +6 Oxidation State:
- Actinyl ion [M+6O2]2+ (M= U,Np, Pu, Am) has M in
+6 Oxidation state.
- Actinyl fluorides of all the actinides are known.
- But uranium forms only uranyl chloride UO2Cl2
and uranyl bromide UO2Br2.
- Uranium in +6 Oxidation state also forms uranyl
nitrate UO2(NO3)2 and uranyl Chlorate UO2(ClO4)2.
• Complexes in +5 Oxidation
State:
- Ion [M+5O2]+ (M= Pa, U,Np, Pu,
Am) has M in +5 Oxidation
state.
- Due to low charge this ions
iunstable to disproportion into
+4 and +6 oxidation state.
• Complexes in +4 Oxidation
State:
- Only for Th
- In water, Pu disproportionate into
+3,+5,+6 but Am disproportionate
into +3, +5.
• Complexes in +3
Oxidation State:
- The actinide preceding Am in
+3 Oxidation state are unstable
and easily oxidize
- Am and succeeding elements in
+3 oxidation state are stable
• Complexes in +2
Oxidation State:
-Only No
Discuss the actinides complexes in different oxidation state?
5. factors
SIZE:
Small size metal
ions have great
tendency to form
complex.
CHARGE:
High nuclear
charged metal ions
have tendency to
form complex
What are the factors that influence
the Actinides Complex Formation?
6. What are types of Actinides
complexes?
Adducts of halides
with mainly oxygen
donor ligands
Salts of
halogeno or
oxohalogeno
anoins
Chelate
complexes of
oxo ligands
7. What is the degree of Actinides
complex formation?
Actinides:
M4+ > MO2
2+ > M3+ > MO2
+
For anoins the order of complexeing ability is generally:
Uninegative ions, F- > NO3
- > Cl- > ClO4
-; Binegative ions,
CO3
2- > OX2- > SO4
2-
8. Thorium
• Thorium is used in the preparation of fuels rods which are used in atomic reactors.
• Many thorium salts are used as medicines in the treatment of cancer.
• Thorium alloys have been used as reducing agents.
• Thorium dioxide is a material for heat-resistant ceramics, as used in high-
temperature laboratory crucibles.
Uranium
• Uranium is of great commercial importance as a nuclear fuel.
• From the early 19th century, glass manufacturers added uranium oxide when
making yellow and green glass (it is sometimes known as Vaseline glass).
• Uranium phosphate complexes [UO2(NO3)2{(RO)3PO}2] are important in the
extraction of uranium in nuclear waste processing.
Plutonium
• 239-Pu is used for fuelling atomic reactors.
• It is used as an ingredient of atomic explosive weapons.
• All isotopes of plutonium are important as nuclear fuels. 237Np is converted by
neutron irriadtion to 238Pu for use a power source in satellites.
Americium
• 241Am is valuable laboratory source of a-paticles.
