3. What is Integrated Fish Farming ?
Integrated fish farming system involves multi-commodity farming in appropriate
combination such that each component compliments each other in a logical
approach for maximizing food production through rational utilization of available
resources, When the fish becomes a major commodity of this system it is known as
integrated fish farming.
Integrated fish farming refers to the simultaneous culture of the fish or shell fish
along with the other culture system . It may be defined as sequential linkage
between two or more culture practice. Generally the integrated fish farming is
culture with two major culture practice in broader term (1) Agro Based (2) Live
Stock based.

5. What is the logic behind Integrated Fish farming ?
The integrated fish farming system approach introduces a change in the farming
techniques for maximum production in the cropping pattern and taken care of
optimal utilization of resource. The farm waste are better recycled for productive
purposes in the integrated system a judicious mix of agricultural , enterprises like
diary ,poultry, piggery, fishery sericulture etc.
The logic behind the integrated fish farming is based on the concept that “There
is no waste and waste is only a misplaced resource which can become a
valuable material for another product. ( Edward et al, 1986).”
The emphasis in such system is on optimizing resources utilization rather than
maximization of individuals element in the system.

7. Kinds of Integrated Fish Farming-
Integrated fish farming can be categories into two broader categories as –the
mixing of fish culture may be applied in 1. Agro based and another category
that is 2.Live-stock (Animal husbandry).

9. Criteria for fish species selection –
The cultured fish should be high tolerating fluctuation in temperature (up to 35°C ) , low dissolved
oxygen and high turbidity .
Fish species should be fast growing .
Selected fish should be compatible with each other.
Selected fish should be hardy resistant to common diseases and parasite .
Fish selection should be based on the feeding availability .
In multi- storey pond the fish should be selected according to feeding habit as bottom feeder , column
feeder and surface feeder ,
Bottom feeder 40-45% ------------------------- Cirrihinus mrigala 20-25% , Cyprinus carpio 15-20%
Column Feeder 25-35% ------------------- Labeo rohita 15-20 %, Hypothylmic molitrix 5-10%
Surface Feeder 30-40% ------- Catlta catla 20-30% , Ctenopharyngodon idella 10-15%
Criteria for selection of Paddy Species-
High tolerating the water logging ,
Resistant to wide variety of Pests
Deep water variety of paddy should be selected for Utter Pradesh Jalmagna is most suited variety of rice
10. There is no additional cost for fish production.
Fishes contribute to the enhancement of paddy production by destroying weeds, causing tillering and mineral
enrichment by their digging activity, and for the fertilization of soil by their excrement and also by the unutilized
artificial feed.
Due to fish cultivation paddy production gets increased by 5 to 15%.
There is practically less additional cost for fish culture, as the excreta of the ducks fertilizes the pond water.
Ducks by agitating the shore areas of the ponds help to release nutrients.
The cost of feed for the ducks gets reduced.
The ducks help to eradicate vectors of fish pathogenic organisms and water borne diseases — causing
organisms infecting man, as they feed on a variety of organisms such as weeds, snails, unwanted harmful insects
and their larvae, tadpole, frog, etc.
Chicken manure is a very efficient fertilizer, so no chemical fertilizer is needed for fertilizing the pond water.
This cuts down the expenditure of rearing fishes.
No supplementary fish feed is required.
The purchase and feeding cost per bird is low.
Chicks are readily available and their productivity can be improved with simple and cheap management.
Advantages Of Integrated Fish Farming
11. Integrated Fish farming is based on the sustainability of the resources , in IFF the wastes output on one
commodity are recycled and becomes input for another commodity.
We all the know that the increasing population is great matter of concern for supply of food , therefore the
Integrated fish farming is an emerging technique to cope up the scarcity of food , In integrated form a small
land is used to start the farming may of paddy or fish or live stock , but in all the cases it increases the
economy of the farmers.
“Less investment & high profit “ it’s the need of hour and Integrated fish farming
fulfills it .
