(ENGLISH COMMUNICATION)
ENGLISH COMMUNICATION BENCHMARK FOR PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS &
ITS LINK TO THEIR CAREER GROWTH
In the era of dynamic and competitive business environment, the English Language has become
an important element in the corporate eco system today. Hence, to adapt to the business
environment, it becomes crucial for young budding professionals to be well-versed with the
language. From basic school grammar to boardroom jargons, to terms derived from pop culture
or words used for social signaling – everything is important. The English language has brought a
paradigm shift in the corporate culture. It is integral for a budding professionals to develop
language skills to become a productive human capital contributing to the bottom line of the
company and thereby enhancing his career growth.
English as a Corporate Language
The best way to understand team dynamics and blend with diversity is by communicating well.
A person with excellent English language skills can act as a binding thread in diversity. A multi
linguist gets an edge due to his /her ability to break the language barrier. This is very much
required in a leadership or managerial position. English fluency open doors for budding
managers to participate in important meetings and represent the company. Communication skills
of a young manager lead to active engagement which can be directly proportional to the rise in
his or her career growth scale.
New Business Developments
Persuasion is a skill required in sales. Without a good command over the language, a person
might feel under confident. Limited knowledge of the language may reduce person’s chances of
bringing new business. Managing global business or working for an MNC can become easy
when one has better English language skills.
Personal development
Budding professionals, besides carefully reading the management text books should cultivate the
habit of reading newspapers, books and journals of their field. They should cultivate the habit of
listening and understanding informative podcasts by industry leaders, linguists and public
speakers to understand the flow, accent and right pronunciation of words. It is not necessary to
use heavy and co pica tied words, but a young manager must not fumble or be at a loss for words
while speaking as this will give a bad impression to his audience. A young professional must
read more to widen his or her horizons.
Being Observant
English is the language of the internet. So for judicious use of technology, one should know its
correct usage. With plenty of websites offering similar information it is important to recognize
what is appropriate. Providing quality information always gives an extra edge to an individual.
Improving Communication
The current level of English can be assessed by taking a test that evaluates the core skills –
Listening, speaking, reading and writing – LSRW. It will enable the young manger to map
his/ he proficiency level, accordingly work to enhance it.
Thanks to the growth of the technology several English language improvement apps and
websites are available on the internet. These platforms help learners to clarify the concepts and
enhance the level of English by using themes and role-plays that are wok related. Regular
assessments such as taking a quiz will help the young manger to calibrate his or her learning.
Increased audio – visual exposure can transform English language learning for budding
professional and technical students.

TIPS TO IMPROVE: LSRW (LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING & WRITING)
1. Vocabulary building: Daily learning 5 – 10 new words with their Synonyms and
Antonyms: Vocabulary building on daily basis - as a basic step for improvement in English
Communication, as words are the basic building blocks of any language. We have kept a bare
minimum target of learning 800 words of day-to-day usage for this module.
2. Reading English Newspaper daily - For 20 minutes daily, possibly loudly and
identifying the words learned earlier in their proper contextual usage. This will provide the
opportunity for pronunciation correction of the learner for the moderator. This is important as
“stand-alone” words learned, will not be of any use unless the learner understands their
contextual reference, which this exercise will provide. Also learning to paraphrase or summarize
what you have read, in your own words, will enhance your power of verbal expression.
Newspaper acts as your “script” for dialogue delivery for any speaker in a Group Discussion or a
Debate.
3. Learning day-to-day conversational sentences - By watching videos, role plays and
by practice and exposure to audio visual media - to develop learning through observation, as this
will accustom the learner with – What to say while you “start or end a conversation” and how to
“greet someone” when you meet him or her.
4. Form small groups of 4-5 friends and start conversing in English as practice. This will
help you to do away with your hesitation as you will have familiar faces to practice or dry run
what you have learned or picked-up through your learning sessions.
5. As Listening is a basic step towards speaking: Watching English News and
Talk Shows / Debates on Television – Learning through observation and listening is a
fundamental step towards speaking. “Listening” or “Imitating” a habit which we used to follow
as a child but have forgotten now as we grow up. Use headphones to listen attentively, pick-up
words that are used in sentences with their proper pronunciation. You can also copy the styles of
various speakers and gradually gain command on spoken English.
6. Personality Development: Developing better English Communication skill as a public
speaker, and building confidence with the help of JAM sessions as a basic measure. Learning the
art of public speaking can develop your personality and confidence and can help you to deliver
better presentations through constant practice, feed-back and improvement of your peer group.
7. Spend at least one-hour daily implementing the above steps, a practice which
is to be done for minimum six months, which will develop your familiarity with English
Language and help you in gaining good command over English Language (LSRW).
8. Exposure to English Audio Visual Media Watch Videos on You Tube Videos,
English Movies, and using headphones to listen attentively as this will bring accuracy in your
pronunciation and also will enhance your familiarity with English Language.

  • 6. TIPS TO IMPROVE: LSRW (LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING & WRITING) 1. Vocabulary building: Daily learning 5 – 10 new words with their Synonyms and Antonyms: Vocabulary building on daily basis - as a basic step for improvement in English Communication, as words are the basic building blocks of any language. We have kept a bare minimum target of learning 800 words of day-to-day usage for this module. 2. Reading English Newspaper daily - For 20 minutes daily, possibly loudly and identifying the words learned earlier in their proper contextual usage. This will provide the opportunity for pronunciation correction of the learner for the moderator. This is important as “stand-alone” words learned, will not be of any use unless the learner understands their contextual reference, which this exercise will provide. Also learning to paraphrase or summarize what you have read, in your own words, will enhance your power of verbal expression. Newspaper acts as your “script” for dialogue delivery for any speaker in a Group Discussion or a Debate. 3. Learning day-to-day conversational sentences - By watching videos, role plays and by practice and exposure to audio visual media - to develop learning through observation, as this will accustom the learner with – What to say while you “start or end a conversation” and how to “greet someone” when you meet him or her. 4. Form small groups of 4-5 friends and start conversing in English as practice. This will help you to do away with your hesitation as you will have familiar faces to practice or dry run what you have learned or picked-up through your learning sessions. 5. As Listening is a basic step towards speaking: Watching English News and Talk Shows / Debates on Television – Learning through observation and listening is a fundamental step towards speaking. “Listening” or “Imitating” a habit which we used to follow as a child but have forgotten now as we grow up. Use headphones to listen attentively, pick-up words that are used in sentences with their proper pronunciation. You can also copy the styles of various speakers and gradually gain command on spoken English. 6. Personality Development: Developing better English Communication skill as a public speaker, and building confidence with the help of JAM sessions as a basic measure. Learning the art of public speaking can develop your personality and confidence and can help you to deliver better presentations through constant practice, feed-back and improvement of your peer group. 7. Spend at least one-hour daily implementing the above steps, a practice which is to be done for minimum six months, which will develop your familiarity with English Language and help you in gaining good command over English Language (LSRW). 8. Exposure to English Audio Visual Media Watch Videos on You Tube Videos, English Movies, and using headphones to listen attentively as this will bring accuracy in your pronunciation and also will enhance your familiarity with English Language.
