2. ICELAND 2010 Our accommodation will be the Skallinn guesthouse near Hvollsvöllur in southern Iceland in a tranquil location with stunning views of the surrounding landscape! So what will out itinerary be? ... This fieldtrip will give you with first hand experience of many of the ideas and topics that we cover during the GCSE course. Where will we stay? The Skallin Centre
3. Day 1 “Cracking Up and Drifting Apart” Your chance to start to experience the volcanic origin of Iceland – see the strange lunar type landscape of the lava fields as we make our way from the airport to our first destination… Be amazed by the fascinating hot springs & sulphur springs in the high temperature geothermal area of Krysuvik And of course a trip to this area wouldn’t be complete without….. Awesome colours and bubbling mud pools reflecting Iceland’s volcanic roots! Lava Dome
4. … a swim in the amazing thermally heated waters of the famous Blue lagoon!
5. Day 2. “Gluggers and Gushers” Cinder Cone volcanic crater Spectacular waterfalls including Gulfoss! Shooting geysers and Bubbling pools! … and what better way to relax after our day’s adventures than to make the most of another one of those amazing geothermally heated swimming pools and hot pots!
6. Day 3. “A Day on Heimaey” Fly out in little 5 and 9 seat planes to the island of Heimaey on the Westmann islands and climb the volcano Eldfell which erupted in 1973. Walk over the lava flows and see the houses being dug out of the ash. At the top the rock is still warm! The island has a stunning population of puffins! The 1973 eruption of Eldfell Fly out to Heimaey!
7. Day 4. “Wet, Wetter, Wettest – There’s snout like it!” The 1973 eruption of Eldfell Fly out to Heimaey! A Day of stunning physical Geography Thundering Waterfalls… Have you ever walked behind a waterfall? Now’s your chance! Rugged Coastline…. We will see classic coastal landforms as we visit the rugged Icelandic coastline Glistening Glaciers… We will visit the glacier snout of Solheimajökull – just one of Iceland’s many spectacular glaciers.
8. Day 5 – Back to the UK…… … going back to Keflavik for our return flight to Heathrow – full of happy memories of the stunning land of fire and ice! Morning spent exploring Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland before…
