How women can rebuild their career using
Open Source Technologies like Android

• Being an event associated with women’s day, focus on issues
specific to women.
• Therefore chose to speak about “rebuilding” a career, which is
something specific to women.
o coz it is they who will mostly have two phases in their
careers (after and before breaks)
Woman & her career - some figures
Woman & her career - some facts
• Sampling from friends & contacts in FB/Linkedin - can observe a similar pattern .
• Academically & performance wise at the entry level and middle management level - would be
good
• The representation goes down mainly because of two facts:
o Prefer to stay back at lower positions than what they deserve to be in - to take up lesser
responsibilities at work
▪ eg: they might take up roles like that of an individual contributor to save time on
people management
Women & Career breaks
• Fresher (not specific to women alone)
• Marriage - relocation to spouse location
• Child birth & maternity break
• Kids’ studies
Woman & her career - Challenges - coming back after a break
• Unfriendly HR policies - people with breaks are looked down upon.
- breaks with more than 6 months not entertained
- companies push you to grow
- travel - especially if you hold a visa
• Difficulty in keeping themselves updated with the changing technology

• Lot of career options to choose from - depending on the amount of time a
woman on a career break can afford to spend

- advantage:
(i) fill gaps in your career - by being at home
(ii) be hands on & updated
(iii) monetise it (sell it on play store, offer in-app purchases)
(iv) can single handedly develop an app
- unlike other work from developer jobs
- so, you will be in full ctrl of the changes in functionality & technical
aspects
(a) develop apps of your own
(b) develop apps as a freelancer or in association with small companies, who do not prefer to have a full time
developer (eg: web development companies, who are looking to slowly planning to move to app development)

technologies, take the first step to move to android by developing
a back end (database and web service) for an android app.

- Pre-sales and marketing activities (anything around you can have an app associated with it
these days)
- eg: your movie complex, your favorite food blog, your travel ticket booking agents
- can call up and fix up an appointment & meet at your convenience.

- Quality Assurance
- Business Analysis to an extent (if one doesn’t have restrictions on the timings)
The above need not be done as an entrepreneur. There are part time jobs in lot of companies &
they look for candidates who work from home for such roles.
