Overfishing Essay
Overfishing is a form of overexploitation where fish stocks are reduced to below acceptable levels. Overfishing can occur in water bodies of any
sizes, such as ponds, rivers, lakes or oceans, and can result in depletion of certain resources. By deplete resources is meant using up or consuming
supplies. Coastal management is defense against flooding and erosion, and techniques that stop erosion to claim lands. Both hard engineering and soft
engineering are types of coastal management strategies. The reason for making use of these strategies is the need for protection of houses and
buildings around coastal areas that can possibly be subject to harm by floods and erosion. In various circumstances both overfishing and coastal

They are not long–term solutions and do little to preserve nature and sustainability can be a basic issue. Soft engineering, however, uses techniques that
are cheap and low technology and can take care of nature whilst battling against erosion. Hard engineering is most often the less efficient when dealing
with flooding and erosion. It often destroys habitats of fish and other wildlife. it can thus be considered to have more disadvantages than advantages.
Furthermore, other coastal management strategies can also have varying impacts on the food we rely on. Smoke and pollution released from factories
surrounding coastal areas can be hazardous to marine wildlife such as fishes and other such foods which can be considerably relied on by millions. To
prevent this from occurring, more effective and worthwhile solutions could be used to prevent erosion, flooding etc. such as soft engineering. Hence,
strategies used to defend against possible coast damaging natural disasters are to an extent useful, but can have effects on environment therefore
decreasing food sources. Overfishing is a profound problem around the globe whereas coastal management strategies only have some disadvantages and
have other options the government can resort to if any problem occurs. Nevertheless, both of these have effects on reliable food sources and other
aspects. Without a doubt, overfishing has miscellaneous impacts on

Ocean Overfishing Essay
1.0 Introduction
Overfishing has led to the destruction of ecosystems and resulting in great amount of reduction of stocks in fish and marine mammals from the 11th
century onwards (Roberts, 2009). Ocean overfishing is defined as catching fish from sea at rates too high thus lead to depletion of the stock of fish. As
today, there are almost 90 percent of fish population have been depleted by humans worldwide because fish is considered as a sources of food. In
2010, 148 million tonnes of fish from fisheries and aquaculture were used by the world and 86 percent of which was used as food for people (Katz,
2012). Besides, according to the non–profit group New Economics Foundation, Ireland, Spain, and Sweden were the worst offenders. Based on a

Representatives for the United Nations, our company Ocean Hope is before you in hopes of gaining your support for our cause. We are a
not–for–profit organisation, dedicated to helping to stop the increasingly real threat of overfishing. We have set out to do this through a series of print
advertisements, raising awareness for the issue and hopefully opening our audience's eyes to the danger our society faces if action is not taken. This, in
turn, will encourage them to re–evaluate their lifestyle choices, hopefully resulting in them donating to our company and/or living in a way that better
suits our company's values by eating only sustainably–sourced seafood, as well as eating seafood in a smaller amount. Overfishing is a threat not only
to marine ecosystems, but also to human survival. If there are no fish, humanity will have to find alternative food sources, which, with our current
technological capabilities, are not readily available nor easily accessible for the general population, potentially leading to widespread famine. Our
advertisement highlights how soon this may become reality, with the statistical claim of scientists predicting the oceans to be completely lifeless by
2050. People may feel that our claim is more legitimate if it has been confirmed by professionals. The prediction alone is grim, and our choice to use the

Solutions to Overfishing
Overfishing can be thought as overharvesting. Taking a copious amount of a resource, fish, whilst using an unrealistic time frame; that does not
account for the renewable resource, fish, to recuperate. Overfishing is not something we can maintain. This over time leads to deceases in species
abundance and biomass, while there is an increase in number of threatened species. This has an overall destructive effect on the balance of aquatic
communities, creates chaos in the trophic levels. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) fisheries glossary defines fish
as any aquatic animal that is harvested. Weather it be, wild fishing or farm fishing, fisheries have many choices on what method they use to fish. The
fishing methods used still in use is dredges, bottom and mid water trawling, pole and line, and lift nets just to name a few. Bottom Trawling causes the
most harm out of this list; damage pertaining to extensive habitat destruction, due to weighted net dragged across the sea floor, as well as bycatch, the
non–target species caught in harvesting methods (Gerrodette, 2007; Davies, 2009). There are new ways of reducing longline fishing gear
modifications, to reduce bycatch mortality rate. It was discovered the changing the shape and size of hooks and bait resulted in the drop in frequency
and severity of injury during capture (Swimmer, 2011). Excessive harvesting understandably has negative effects on the fish we select for, at that time.

Argumentative Essay On Overfishing
Abstract: Overfishing is the process of fishing to the point where more fish are caught than the population can replace through natural reproduction. It
may seem profitable to quickly grab as much fish as you can, but it is extremely harmful to the marine ecosystem. The results of this have lasting
impacts on the balance of life in the oceans, and the social and economic well–being of the coastal communities who depend on fish for their way of
life. Fortunately, there are efforts being done to help prevent this dangerous activity. New Zealand has noticeably led the charge to ending overfishing.
Some ways countries have been limiting fishing activities are: marine protected areas, and fishing quotas. These are more of the notable examples,

If you think about how big that number is, it should tell you how much of a problem this is. The same study found that 32 percent are classified as
overexploited, depleted or recovering, meaning that they are reproducing far less than they are potentially able to. This percentage is the highest
that has been seen in the decades of studies, indicating that the problem of overfishing is becoming more and more severe. And at this point, it
seems the problem will only get worse, unless we make severe changes. However, this is much easier said than done, billions of people rely on fish
for protein, and fishing is the principal livelihood for millions of people around the world. For centuries, our seas and oceans have been considered a
limitless source of food. However, increasing fishing efforts over the last 50 years because of the depleting fish populations, has led to unsustainable
fishing practices that are pushing many fish stocks to the point of collapse. Many important commercial fish populations (like the Atlantic bluefin tuna)
have suffered a decline to the point where their survival as a species is extremely threatened. The more we hunt and kill these fish, the less likely the
fish will be able to reproduce and begin to thrive again. Target fishing of top

Overfishing Report
For my eighth grade capstone project, I addressed the issue of overfishing.
Overfishing is a global problem that affects far more than just the ocean. I chose the topic of overfishing because I spend a lot of time in the water
and on the ocean and care a lot about the aquaculture. During this process, we were meant to learn a lot about ourselves and our topic. I did learn a bit
more about overfishing. The most important thing that I learned about myself is that choosing a topic that I'm passionate about makes the project a
whole lot easier.
My brother is a fisherman and he does it for sport, for fun. Every weekend he goes out on the boat and catches a ton of fish, most of the time he brings
them home and we eat them, either that or he sells them to other people...show more content...
I got to research and share with people something that I'm passionate about and enjoy.
In computer class, we had to make a slideshow and present our project for ten minutes. My slideshow had almost fifty slides and I had to talk fast
to get all of my information in. For the Science fair project, I also did a project on overfishing because I like researching it. When the time came to
talk to the judges, it was easy because I knew my topic inside and out. Having already presented in front of scary Science fair judges made presenting
in front of my classmates a whole lot easier.
I used my notes from science fair to help me in my capstone so I didn't have to take too many notes, which was good because I do not like taking
notes and it left more time for me to work on my presentation. The most interesting/sad fact that I found out was that there are 90% less apex predators
in the ocean since 1950.
My Capstone product was a hand–out with facts about overfishing. I made

The Issue of Overfishing
In contemporary society, human society is progressing rapidly on various fronts. Nevertheless at the same time, the problem of overfishing is becoming
increasingly worrisome and attract extensive attention of the society. In this essay, I will address overfishing and propose some possible causes of this
phenomenon which can give contribution to some solutions. Introduction
This issue of overfishing covers vast fields, such as science, humanity, economy, society and nature. The term "optimum", in regard to the yield from a
fishery, is difficult to be defined, precisely and fixedly. Generally speaking, we can describe it as follows: (Niles E. Stople, January 2009, FishNet USA)
Will provide maximum effectiveness benefit to the Nation, particularly in relation to food production and recreational opportunities, and giving
consideration to the protection of marine ecosystems
In case of an overfished fishery, provides for reconstructing to a level consistent with producing the maximum sustainable yield in such fishery
Overfishing's status as the focus of public concern mainly results from its negligible but harmful influence on individuals, collective, and even the
whole world. One of the world's significant fishery in the East China Sea is damage by overfishing and growing levels of contamination, recent
research has shown, confirming the fear of fishermen and environmentalists. (Xinhua on GOV, Lu Hui, ed. 16

Essay On Overfishing
The menhaden is a small, oily, fish found in coastal and estuarine waters from Nova Scotia to northern Florida. The menhaden's small size but extreme
oiliness makes it the most popular fishery export in America. Because of this, menhaden oil is used in hundreds of products, from omega 3 fatty acid
supplements and cosmetics to fish meal, which is fed to livestock. The need for menhaden product is strong, but overuse causes challenges. Overfishing
of the menhaden is an enormous problem, especially in the Chesapeake Bay. Menhaden are fished in huge numbers, with the majority being fished at a
very young age, which means the species is not reproducing at a rate proportionate to its rate of death. The overfishing of menhaden, a Chesapeake
keystone species, causes low population in important predatory species, an imbalanced ecosystem, and a struggling local economy.
Predatory species rely on the menhaden for food. Popular game fish such as the rockfish heavily rely on the menhaden as a main source of food, and
local birds of prey such as the osprey die off without fish to eat. The predatory fish population thrives when the menhaden thrives, and...show more

It is no laughing matter when the population of a keystone species is decreased. Low populations of keystone species cause ecosystems to suffer. A
keystone species affects an ecosystem and how it thrives. When menhaden disappear, the species that prey on them also disappear, and the species
those predatory fish are prey to will subsequently suffer as well. When a single species is removed from the food chain, a domino effect begins,
causing a mass die–out of species in the ecosystem. Not only is there a negative effect on predators of the menhaden, but there is also a negative effect
brought on by the menhaden's

Overfishing: The Problem and the Solution
A major environmental problem that has developed over the last few years is overfishing. What is overfishing? Overfishing is simply what it sounds
like. Overfishing occurs when fishermen are catching fish so quickly and at such high rates that the fish are unable to reproduce fast enough to
replenish the population. It is my belief that, if this has not always been a problem, it has always been a problem in the making. This problem has
progressively gotten worse as the human population that relies on fish as a food resource has increased and the equipment and techniques used by the

Some of the actions that can be taken in order to reverse the problems that overfishing has caused include: inform the public, put restrictions on catch
limits, reduce bycatch, protect habitats, and enforce all new policies. The following plan lays out the steps that will occur with each action and when
these actions should be taken.
Action Items:
Inform the public including consumers and fishermen of the problems and what can be done to make a change.
Action Steps:
Research and identify the long term effects that overfishing will have.
Conduct interviews with both environmentalists and experts on the issue as well as fishermen in order to present both sides of the argument.
Attend a city council meeting to introduce the idea and the importance of a presentation as well as schedule a time for one to be made.
Present information on what overfishing is, the impact that overfishing has on the marine ecosystem and on our existence, make consumers more
aware of the type and amount of fish that they eat, and actions that can be taken to reverse the problem.
Timeline:
Month 1–4
Action Items:
Put restrictions on catch limits.
Action Steps:
Scientists should assess and determine the total number of fish that could be caught without a negative impact.
These levels should be constantly monitored and adjusted to accommodate changes.

Effects Of Overfishing
Introduction
The main causes of overfishing are poor fishery management with a lack of regulation, unrestricted access to the ocean and illegal fishing. During the
last few decades the demand for edible seafood globally has skyrocketed and the high demand is causing us to overfish to keep up with the demand.
Unfortunately, fisherman are catching more fish than can be naturally reproduced. There are only limited regulations in place, which means that fishing
companies are basically fishing when and where they want to with out any oversite. Overfishing causes such serious effects such as the ocean life
getting knocked out of balance. Coastal communities rely on the benefits of the fishing for social and economic health. When we overfish it...show more

The Oceaneos Research Foundation stated that in the mid–1990 the Atlantic cod was caught to near extinction. "Newfoundland's fishing industry
collapsed due to overfishing and 40,000 jobs were lost and the ecosystem destroyed. Fifteen years after the loss of the cod industry they are still
waiting for a recovery." ("The Oceaneos Marine Research Foundation", 2017)
Another global effect of overfishing is fish farming or aquaculture. It was first started to help preserve the ocean and hoped to help people to obtain
a reliable fish source. Unfortunately, what many came to realize is the downside of fish farming. One example is water contamination, where
consequently waste products such as foods eaten, feces and other dead fish, are all dumped into our main water supply which contributes to water
pollution. Moreover, chemicals that are used to treat the fish farms like antibiotics and algaecides are all released into the ocean; which is a real
cause for concern for our oceans. Fish that come from the fish farms are pumped full of drugs, to prevent sickness in the fish but this is not healthy for
us to eat. There is also a great environmental impact which includes the fact that to sustain fish farms, portions of

global economy, with that the number of sea life with decrease exponentially hence our way of life of fishing will become extremely difficult to fish in

Overfishing Is A Global Issue
Overfishing began in the early 1800's when it was discovered that whale blubber could be utilized for oil lamps. Overfishing is when fish are taken
from the ocean at a rate that is too fast for them to adequately repopulate. In contrast to every damaging anthropogenic activity, overfishing has taken
the biggest toll on the marine ecosystems and has led many fish species to reduce rapidly and others to become extinct. In order to stop this before it is
too late, we must enforce sustainable methods, and eliminate the use of these extremely damaging procedures. Overfishing is a global issue, that has
resulted in economic loss, marine life disruption and decreased food security, by supporting sustainable methods and campaigning to ban our...show

Bycatch is all of the extra items the net catches outside of the targeted species. Practices like trawling, could lead our marine ecosystems to
suddenly collapse, leading our already severe problem to spiral out of control. This practice is not the only method that is currently being used that
is resulting in terrible consequences. Furthermore, fish are not the only ones affected by overfishing. Many of the human population rely heavily on
fish species as a viable food source. If it were to suddenly and entirely disappear we would notice. "Every year, 77.9 million metric tons (170 billion
lbs.) of wild fish and shellfish are harvested from the oceans " (Palliser). Plus, this high demand for fish has led fisheries to fish down the web. This
means that as fish species have become depleted or extinct, fisheries will continue to search and catch deeper and deeper into the ocean. This affects
the marine biodiversity and also effects the value of marine animals. The majority of fisheries around the world are pushed to their limits. Fishermen
are aware of the critical need for safeguarding fish populations and the marine environment. However, illegal and pirate fishing are still in practice and
regulations continue to be ignored. "Worldwide illegal and unreported fishing losses are estimated between 11 and 26 million tons, or one–fifth of the
total global fisheries

The Causes And Effects Of Overfishing
1.0 Introduction Millions of people consume fish every day in the world as a key source of protein, but not everybody question the sources of their
food. Whether the source of their seafood is harmful to the marine environment or not. With the demand of consumers, many fisheries are overfishing
to earn more profit. Overfishing is a serious environmental issue whereby the number of fishes caught excessively to an extent whereby the fish
population is at risk of extinction. The problem has become increasingly worrying as it is increasing. Overfishing has a few causes mainly being
unethical fishing. The problem can cause a lot of damage that includes the extinction of fish species and the damages of the marine ecosystem.
However, there are also...show more content...
It also threatens the extinction of targeted species while destructing the marine habitat of the overfished area. 3.1 Marine life imbalance and
ecosystem destruction Marine life imbalance could occur due to overfishing. This is because most fish species that are widely targeted are on top of
the marine food chain like sharks and tuna, resulting in overpopulation of smaller preys. Killing off too many of these marine herbivores will affect
the marine ecosystem by resulting in a great amount if algae increase or coral die–offs ("Overfishing | Threats | WWF", 2016). This happens because
when a certain species is overfished to a very low population, the species cannot fulfil their role as a predator or prey of the habitat (Lee & Safina,
2016). 3.2 Threats extinction When a targeted species is continuously overfished, serious threats of extinction may occur. This is because the rate of
fishing is so intense that the fishes cannot reproduce fast enough to catch up with the rate of the losses. A good example in Malaysia is that, close to
half of the large shark species, including hammerhead sharks, are under threats of facing extinction due to overfishing of these species for their fins
(Birn, n.d.). Some species were overfished to an extent that the number of sharks left now is less than 10% of the original number. Moreover, there are
many fishes that are fished when they are still very young, hence, not given a chance to

Overfishing– to deplete the stock of fish in a body of water by too much fishing. Overfishing can be defined in many way, all of them leading to the
same conclusion: Catching too many fish is bad for the environment. Overfishing is an unsustainable use of the oceans. Overfishing occurs because fish
are captured at a faster rate than they can reproduce. Also advances in fishing technology and an increased demand for fish has led to overfishing,
causing several marine species to become extinct. Despite counter arguments, overfishing is harmful and needs to be stopped because we are depleting
our fishing industry, impacting the food web, and creating economical dangers. Without creating stricter regulations, the fishing industry will
continue to diminish. Due to advances in technology, fishermen can access places that have never been fished. At first, it was the creation of the
simple trawler boat which had a minimal impact on our environment. It was the creation of the factory fishing vessels that have taken over and led
to mass amounts of overfishing. These boats use down scan sonar, side imaging, and GPS giving them an unfair advantage over the fish they are
after. Using nets that are 50 meters wide and able to hold a weight greater than two medium sized planes, the boats trawl depths of up to 170 km deep.

The world's population is increasing alarmingly, and as a result, there is a bigger demand on sustainable food sources. Approximately one billion
people, mainly in developing countries such as China, India, and the Philippines, are relying on fish as a major source of many nutrients, including
protein. However, overfishing, which refers to the fishing industry removing more fish than can be replenished by the remaining fish, is becoming a
big problem, as fish in the ocean are not an unlimited resource. Most people are not aware of it, but overfishing can affect everyone on the planet.
Overfishing is a serious issue that affects both humanity and the ecosystem, and needs to be taken care of immediately.

If we continue to overfish, several aquatic species may become endangered, or maybe even extinct. From there, the damage will be irreversible. The
aforementioned problems will then be a reality. However, if we stop overfishing now, then those issues will become very minor and can be easily
solved. By putting an end to overfishing, the fisheries won't have to stop operating, but they will have to limit the amount of fish they catch. Ocean
ecosystems become healthy once again while still allowing us to use fisheries as a resource. Continuing overfishing will put an end to all fisheries
because there won't be any more fish to catch at all. Therefore, the problem overfishing must be taken care of now, or the time to act will be gone

The Benefits Of Overfishing
Somewhere in the world an innocent group of dolphins is getting caught and killed in a giant net used to capture thousands of fish at one time.
Around 25 percent of all fish caught in nets are caught unintentionally and sometimes killed. Have you ever wondered where all the fish went? Or
why the fish population is decreasing? I believe that overfishing laws need to be enforced in all bodies of water around the world because it is overall
bad for the environment, for us as humans, and our needs.
First of all, fish is a common food source in the world especially in areas around the ocean. People all around the world rely on fish for their main
food source everyday. The fish population is severely depleting because of lots of overfishing. To show how much less fish there are, my research
shows that the amount of fish consumption has gone down in the past few years. Many types of seafood have been overfished also. Places like
restaurants have had to replace normal fish on the menu with similar looking and tasting fish because of the lack of seafood. Species like eel and king
crab have been overfished to critically low levels. Loads of these species get caught in nets everyday with the chance to escape.
Bycatch needs to be stopped during fishing everywhere. It has caused many fish and other creatures to be overfished. Bycatch means fish and other
things unintentionally caught in massive drift nets used by fisherman. Fish that are not edible, harmful, or dangerous to the

Overfishing is a huge issue around the world. Overfishing occurs when more fish are caught than the amount they can reproduce. This overfishing
problem is a huge decline in population of fish. Due to overfishing the animals at the top of the ocean food chain such as Sharks will have no food to
eat. Overfishing is a major problem for the ecosystem of the ocean. Overfishing affects the ocean ecosystem in many negative ways. Fishermen can
target the fish at the top of the food chain or the bottom of the food chain, but either way it both can affect the ecosystem. " Targetedfishing of top
predators eventually disrupts marine communities, causing an increased abundance of smaller marine animals at the bottom of the food chain."(WWF)

Overfishing affects the ecosystem in a negative way.
Overfishing causes a chain reaction in other populations. If one species is being overfished that fish could possibly be the prey to another species.
" Herring is a vital prey species for the cod. Therefore, when herring are overfished the cod population suffers as well."(ypte) Due to one species being
nearly depleted the other can possibly become depleted as well due to the marine food chain being very sensitive. Overfishing a specific species of
fish can soon cause it to become extinct. Species such as the Blue–fin tuna has been fished so much along the Coast of Japan that it has become an
endangered species and decreases the biodiversity of the ocean. If this," Continues, more species will be driven to extinction and aquatic ecosystems
will collapse."(Revolution) Due to overfishing, the aquatic ecosystem can be in danger of collapsing. Overfishing not only affects the fish itself, but
the ecosystem. If overfishing continues there may be a chance that the ocean can become completely depleted of fish. Studies show that," More than
85% of global fish stocks in our oceans are at significant risk of IUU fishing."(WWF) Overfishing causes many problems for the ecosystem of the
ocean. This overfishing over–exploitation is not only in one ocean but multiple. "Several ocean areas, every single species of fish is at high or

advanced techniques made in the area of commercial fishing has caused some species of fish to be virtually extinct. In fact, some species like the
giant bluefin tuna widely used by Japanese chefs and served in many restaurants, are now just few years away from extinction. Human demand for
fish has increased enormously over the last several years, particularly since the 1950's. This is widely due to the reported health benefits of making

This program allows fishermen to be granted a percentage share of their total allowable catch. They can also be granted exclusive access to
particular fishing zones, also known as territorial use rights for fishing. As long as fishermen do not exceed their allowable catch, they have greater
flexibility to fish when the weather the most cooperative and the market conditions are best. Each fisherman's shares grow in value as the overall
fishery improves and population of larger fish increase. This gives the fishermen personal incentive to cooperate in resource management because
they stand to profit personally from the venture. In fact, in 2007, the Catch Share program was put into effect in the Gulf of Mexico the help mitigate
the decline in the red snapper population. Fishermen there earned 25 percent more for their fish and wasteful catches were cut by 70 percent. And, for
the first time since 1990, the banks were open for fishing all year round. While these numbers are encouraging, environmentalist and the fishing
industry have different ideas and techniques that they believe will solve the problem to benefit all. However, all agree that there should be better

need to be taken now in order to preserve the ocean's delicate

The water resource problem in the video is overfishing. Overfishing is a problem that occurs when fishermen catch fish at a rate faster than they can
reproduce. I think overfishing originated when fishermen began using bigger and better fishing nets and techniques. Better fishing equipment resulted
in overfishing, which is a major water resource problem. Depletion of the fish population is a problem that could be managed. Even though, it is
difficult for the depleted stocks to return to sustainable levels, and other species dependent on the depleted stocks may become imbalanced, causing
further problems, it is possible to recover (MarineBio.org, 1998–2008). A management and sustainment plan I think would benefit both sides of the

not be too bad. Fishermen would still have their jobs, but there would be a limit on the amount of fishing they could do. I personally do not think that
people's lifestyle would change dramatically. Fishermen would only be able to catch what they need, and this would show them how important the
resource is. A little change is good, especially if it would help the fish population increase instead of continuing to decrease. My plan would affect the
resources positively because it would help the fish, which would help the environment.

Overfishing Essay

  • 1. Overfishing Essay Overfishing is a form of overexploitation where fish stocks are reduced to below acceptable levels. Overfishing can occur in water bodies of any sizes, such as ponds, rivers, lakes or oceans, and can result in depletion of certain resources. By deplete resources is meant using up or consuming supplies. Coastal management is defense against flooding and erosion, and techniques that stop erosion to claim lands. Both hard engineering and soft engineering are types of coastal management strategies. The reason for making use of these strategies is the need for protection of houses and buildings around coastal areas that can possibly be subject to harm by floods and erosion. In various circumstances both overfishing and coastal management...show more content... They are not long–term solutions and do little to preserve nature and sustainability can be a basic issue. Soft engineering, however, uses techniques that are cheap and low technology and can take care of nature whilst battling against erosion. Hard engineering is most often the less efficient when dealing with flooding and erosion. It often destroys habitats of fish and other wildlife. it can thus be considered to have more disadvantages than advantages. Furthermore, other coastal management strategies can also have varying impacts on the food we rely on. Smoke and pollution released from factories surrounding coastal areas can be hazardous to marine wildlife such as fishes and other such foods which can be considerably relied on by millions. To prevent this from occurring, more effective and worthwhile solutions could be used to prevent erosion, flooding etc. such as soft engineering. Hence, strategies used to defend against possible coast damaging natural disasters are to an extent useful, but can have effects on environment therefore decreasing food sources. Overfishing is a profound problem around the globe whereas coastal management strategies only have some disadvantages and have other options the government can resort to if any problem occurs. Nevertheless, both of these have effects on reliable food sources and other aspects. Without a doubt, overfishing has miscellaneous impacts on Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Ocean Overfishing Essay 1.0 Introduction Overfishing has led to the destruction of ecosystems and resulting in great amount of reduction of stocks in fish and marine mammals from the 11th century onwards (Roberts, 2009). Ocean overfishing is defined as catching fish from sea at rates too high thus lead to depletion of the stock of fish. As today, there are almost 90 percent of fish population have been depleted by humans worldwide because fish is considered as a sources of food. In 2010, 148 million tonnes of fish from fisheries and aquaculture were used by the world and 86 percent of which was used as food for people (Katz, 2012). Besides, according to the non–profit group New Economics Foundation, Ireland, Spain, and Sweden were the worst offenders. Based on a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Persuasive Essay On Overfishing Representatives for the United Nations, our company Ocean Hope is before you in hopes of gaining your support for our cause. We are a not–for–profit organisation, dedicated to helping to stop the increasingly real threat of overfishing. We have set out to do this through a series of print advertisements, raising awareness for the issue and hopefully opening our audience's eyes to the danger our society faces if action is not taken. This, in turn, will encourage them to re–evaluate their lifestyle choices, hopefully resulting in them donating to our company and/or living in a way that better suits our company's values by eating only sustainably–sourced seafood, as well as eating seafood in a smaller amount. Overfishing is a threat not only to marine ecosystems, but also to human survival. If there are no fish, humanity will have to find alternative food sources, which, with our current technological capabilities, are not readily available nor easily accessible for the general population, potentially leading to widespread famine. Our advertisement highlights how soon this may become reality, with the statistical claim of scientists predicting the oceans to be completely lifeless by 2050. People may feel that our claim is more legitimate if it has been confirmed by professionals. The prediction alone is grim, and our choice to use the ...show more content... We have used imperative language in the word 'stop' because action must be taken. Overfishing is not just a potential scenario – it is real and it is occurring right now as you are reading this, and we as a collective race of humans must take control of this situation and do something about it now. The red line underneath acts not only as a division between the ad and our contact details, but also as an underlining of the final statement, placing further emphasis on the necessity and urgency of our command to stop Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Solutions to Overfishing Overfishing can be thought as overharvesting. Taking a copious amount of a resource, fish, whilst using an unrealistic time frame; that does not account for the renewable resource, fish, to recuperate. Overfishing is not something we can maintain. This over time leads to deceases in species abundance and biomass, while there is an increase in number of threatened species. This has an overall destructive effect on the balance of aquatic communities, creates chaos in the trophic levels. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) fisheries glossary defines fish as any aquatic animal that is harvested. Weather it be, wild fishing or farm fishing, fisheries have many choices on what method they use to fish. The fishing methods used still in use is dredges, bottom and mid water trawling, pole and line, and lift nets just to name a few. Bottom Trawling causes the most harm out of this list; damage pertaining to extensive habitat destruction, due to weighted net dragged across the sea floor, as well as bycatch, the non–target species caught in harvesting methods (Gerrodette, 2007; Davies, 2009). There are new ways of reducing longline fishing gear modifications, to reduce bycatch mortality rate. It was discovered the changing the shape and size of hooks and bait resulted in the drop in frequency and severity of injury during capture (Swimmer, 2011). Excessive harvesting understandably has negative effects on the fish we select for, at that time. As the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Argumentative Essay On Overfishing Abstract: Overfishing is the process of fishing to the point where more fish are caught than the population can replace through natural reproduction. It may seem profitable to quickly grab as much fish as you can, but it is extremely harmful to the marine ecosystem. The results of this have lasting impacts on the balance of life in the oceans, and the social and economic well–being of the coastal communities who depend on fish for their way of life. Fortunately, there are efforts being done to help prevent this dangerous activity. New Zealand has noticeably led the charge to ending overfishing. Some ways countries have been limiting fishing activities are: marine protected areas, and fishing quotas. These are more of the notable examples, ...show more content... If you think about how big that number is, it should tell you how much of a problem this is. The same study found that 32 percent are classified as overexploited, depleted or recovering, meaning that they are reproducing far less than they are potentially able to. This percentage is the highest that has been seen in the decades of studies, indicating that the problem of overfishing is becoming more and more severe. And at this point, it seems the problem will only get worse, unless we make severe changes. However, this is much easier said than done, billions of people rely on fish for protein, and fishing is the principal livelihood for millions of people around the world. For centuries, our seas and oceans have been considered a limitless source of food. However, increasing fishing efforts over the last 50 years because of the depleting fish populations, has led to unsustainable fishing practices that are pushing many fish stocks to the point of collapse. Many important commercial fish populations (like the Atlantic bluefin tuna) have suffered a decline to the point where their survival as a species is extremely threatened. The more we hunt and kill these fish, the less likely the fish will be able to reproduce and begin to thrive again. Target fishing of top Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Overfishing Report For my eighth grade capstone project, I addressed the issue of overfishing. Overfishing is a global problem that affects far more than just the ocean. I chose the topic of overfishing because I spend a lot of time in the water and on the ocean and care a lot about the aquaculture. During this process, we were meant to learn a lot about ourselves and our topic. I did learn a bit more about overfishing. The most important thing that I learned about myself is that choosing a topic that I'm passionate about makes the project a whole lot easier. My brother is a fisherman and he does it for sport, for fun. Every weekend he goes out on the boat and catches a ton of fish, most of the time he brings them home and we eat them, either that or he sells them to other people...show more content... I got to research and share with people something that I'm passionate about and enjoy. In computer class, we had to make a slideshow and present our project for ten minutes. My slideshow had almost fifty slides and I had to talk fast to get all of my information in. For the Science fair project, I also did a project on overfishing because I like researching it. When the time came to talk to the judges, it was easy because I knew my topic inside and out. Having already presented in front of scary Science fair judges made presenting in front of my classmates a whole lot easier. I used my notes from science fair to help me in my capstone so I didn't have to take too many notes, which was good because I do not like taking notes and it left more time for me to work on my presentation. The most interesting/sad fact that I found out was that there are 90% less apex predators in the ocean since 1950. My Capstone product was a hand–out with facts about overfishing. • 7. The Issue of Overfishing In contemporary society, human society is progressing rapidly on various fronts. Nevertheless at the same time, the problem of overfishing is becoming increasingly worrisome and attract extensive attention of the society. In this essay, I will address overfishing and propose some possible causes of this phenomenon which can give contribution to some solutions. Introduction This issue of overfishing covers vast fields, such as science, humanity, economy, society and nature. The term "optimum", in regard to the yield from a fishery, is difficult to be defined, precisely and fixedly. Generally speaking, we can describe it as follows: (Niles E. Stople, January 2009, FishNet USA) Will provide maximum effectiveness benefit to the Nation, particularly in relation to food production and recreational opportunities, and giving consideration to the protection of marine ecosystems In case of an overfished fishery, provides for reconstructing to a level consistent with producing the maximum sustainable yield in such fishery Overfishing's status as the focus of public concern mainly results from its negligible but harmful influence on individuals, collective, and even the whole world. One of the world's significant fishery in the East China Sea is damage by overfishing and growing levels of contamination, recent research has shown, confirming the fear of fishermen and environmentalists. • 8. Essay On Overfishing The menhaden is a small, oily, fish found in coastal and estuarine waters from Nova Scotia to northern Florida. The menhaden's small size but extreme oiliness makes it the most popular fishery export in America. Because of this, menhaden oil is used in hundreds of products, from omega 3 fatty acid supplements and cosmetics to fish meal, which is fed to livestock. The need for menhaden product is strong, but overuse causes challenges. Overfishing of the menhaden is an enormous problem, especially in the Chesapeake Bay. Menhaden are fished in huge numbers, with the majority being fished at a very young age, which means the species is not reproducing at a rate proportionate to its rate of death. The overfishing of menhaden, a Chesapeake keystone species, causes low population in important predatory species, an imbalanced ecosystem, and a struggling local economy. Predatory species rely on the menhaden for food. Popular game fish such as the rockfish heavily rely on the menhaden as a main source of food, and local birds of prey such as the osprey die off without fish to eat. The predatory fish population thrives when the menhaden thrives, and...show more content... It is no laughing matter when the population of a keystone species is decreased. Low populations of keystone species cause ecosystems to suffer. A keystone species affects an ecosystem and how it thrives. When menhaden disappear, the species that prey on them also disappear, and the species those predatory fish are prey to will subsequently suffer as well. When a single species is removed from the food chain, a domino effect begins, causing a mass die–out of species in the ecosystem. Not only is there a negative effect on predators of the menhaden, but there is also a negative effect brought on by the menhaden's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Overfishing: The Problem and the Solution Your Name Axia College of University of Phoenix Overfishing: The Problem and the Solution A major environmental problem that has developed over the last few years is overfishing. What is overfishing? Overfishing is simply what it sounds like. Overfishing occurs when fishermen are catching fish so quickly and at such high rates that the fish are unable to reproduce fast enough to replenish the population. It is my belief that, if this has not always been a problem, it has always been a problem in the making. This problem has progressively gotten worse as the human population that relies on fish as a food resource has increased and the equipment and techniques used by the fishermen have...show more content... Some of the actions that can be taken in order to reverse the problems that overfishing has caused include: inform the public, put restrictions on catch limits, reduce bycatch, protect habitats, and enforce all new policies. The following plan lays out the steps that will occur with each action and when these actions should be taken. Action Items: Inform the public including consumers and fishermen of the problems and what can be done to make a change. Action Steps: Research and identify the long term effects that overfishing will have. Conduct interviews with both environmentalists and experts on the issue as well as fishermen in order to present both sides of the argument. Attend a city council meeting to introduce the idea and the importance of a presentation as well as schedule a time for one to be made.

  • 11. Effects Of Overfishing Introduction The main causes of overfishing are poor fishery management with a lack of regulation, unrestricted access to the ocean and illegal fishing. During the last few decades the demand for edible seafood globally has skyrocketed and the high demand is causing us to overfish to keep up with the demand. Unfortunately, fisherman are catching more fish than can be naturally reproduced. There are only limited regulations in place, which means that fishing companies are basically fishing when and where they want to with out any oversite. Overfishing causes such serious effects such as the ocean life getting knocked out of balance. Coastal communities rely on the benefits of the fishing for social and economic health. When we overfish it...show more content... The Oceaneos Research Foundation stated that in the mid–1990 the Atlantic cod was caught to near extinction. "Newfoundland's fishing industry collapsed due to overfishing and 40,000 jobs were lost and the ecosystem destroyed. Fifteen years after the loss of the cod industry they are still waiting for a recovery." ("The Oceaneos Marine Research Foundation", 2017) Another global effect of overfishing is fish farming or aquaculture. It was first started to help preserve the ocean and hoped to help people to obtain a reliable fish source. Unfortunately, what many came to realize is the downside of fish farming. One example is water contamination, where consequently waste products such as foods eaten, feces and other dead fish, are all dumped into our main water supply which contributes to water pollution. Moreover, chemicals that are used to treat the fish farms like antibiotics and algaecides are all released into the ocean; which is a real cause for concern for our oceans. Fish that come from the fish farms are pumped full of drugs, to prevent sickness in the fish but this is not healthy for us to eat. There is also a great environmental impact which includes the fact that to sustain fish farms, portions of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Ocean Overfishing As if overfishing in the earth's oceans wasn't bad enough and little to no time for the fish's population to reproduce we are slowly exhausting the vast ocean's natural ecosystem of their wildlife (Dr. Daniel Pauly, Overfishing.org) and with the probable extinction of the sharks bring ruin the entire global economy, with that the number of sea life with decrease exponentially hence our way of life of fishing will become extremely difficult to fish in the earth's oceans with little to no fish left to catch. Eventually it may become a reality where fishermen may not be able to maintain their basic living lifestyle and millions of people will suffer unemployment with a deteriorating ocean thus the economic foundation will be at risk of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Overfishing Is A Global Issue Overfishing began in the early 1800's when it was discovered that whale blubber could be utilized for oil lamps. Overfishing is when fish are taken from the ocean at a rate that is too fast for them to adequately repopulate. In contrast to every damaging anthropogenic activity, overfishing has taken the biggest toll on the marine ecosystems and has led many fish species to reduce rapidly and others to become extinct. In order to stop this before it is too late, we must enforce sustainable methods, and eliminate the use of these extremely damaging procedures. Overfishing is a global issue, that has resulted in economic loss, marine life disruption and decreased food security, by supporting sustainable methods and campaigning to ban our...show more content... Bycatch is all of the extra items the net catches outside of the targeted species. Practices like trawling, could lead our marine ecosystems to suddenly collapse, leading our already severe problem to spiral out of control. This practice is not the only method that is currently being used that is resulting in terrible consequences. Furthermore, fish are not the only ones affected by overfishing. Many of the human population rely heavily on fish species as a viable food source. If it were to suddenly and entirely disappear we would notice. "Every year, 77.9 million metric tons (170 billion lbs.) of wild fish and shellfish are harvested from the oceans " (Palliser). Plus, this high demand for fish has led fisheries to fish down the web. This means that as fish species have become depleted or extinct, fisheries will continue to search and catch deeper and deeper into the ocean. This affects the marine biodiversity and also effects the value of marine animals. The majority of fisheries around the world are pushed to their limits. Fishermen are aware of the critical need for safeguarding fish populations and the marine environment. However, illegal and pirate fishing are still in practice and regulations continue to be ignored. "Worldwide illegal and unreported fishing losses are estimated between 11 and 26 million tons, or one–fifth of the total global fisheries Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. The Causes And Effects Of Overfishing 1.0 Introduction Millions of people consume fish every day in the world as a key source of protein, but not everybody question the sources of their food. Whether the source of their seafood is harmful to the marine environment or not. With the demand of consumers, many fisheries are overfishing to earn more profit. Overfishing is a serious environmental issue whereby the number of fishes caught excessively to an extent whereby the fish population is at risk of extinction. The problem has become increasingly worrying as it is increasing. Overfishing has a few causes mainly being unethical fishing. The problem can cause a lot of damage that includes the extinction of fish species and the damages of the marine ecosystem. However, there are also...show more content... It also threatens the extinction of targeted species while destructing the marine habitat of the overfished area. 3.1 Marine life imbalance and ecosystem destruction Marine life imbalance could occur due to overfishing. This is because most fish species that are widely targeted are on top of the marine food chain like sharks and tuna, resulting in overpopulation of smaller preys. Killing off too many of these marine herbivores will affect the marine ecosystem by resulting in a great amount if algae increase or coral die–offs ("Overfishing | Threats | WWF", 2016). This happens because when a certain species is overfished to a very low population, the species cannot fulfil their role as a predator or prey of the habitat (Lee & Safina, 2016). 3.2 Threats extinction When a targeted species is continuously overfished, serious threats of extinction may occur. This is because the rate of fishing is so intense that the fishes cannot reproduce fast enough to catch up with the rate of the losses. A good example in Malaysia is that, close to half of the large shark species, including hammerhead sharks, are under threats of facing extinction due to overfishing of these species for their fins (Birn, n.d.). Some species were overfished to an extent that the number of sharks left now is less than 10% of the original number. Moreover, there are many fishes that are fished when they are still very young, hence, not given a chance to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Overfishing Essay Sage Teachout Mrs. Hildebrand English 101 October 16, 2017 Fishing for Answers Overfishing– to deplete the stock of fish in a body of water by too much fishing. Overfishing can be defined in many way, all of them leading to the same conclusion: Catching too many fish is bad for the environment. Overfishing is an unsustainable use of the oceans. Overfishing occurs because fish are captured at a faster rate than they can reproduce. Also advances in fishing technology and an increased demand for fish has led to overfishing, causing several marine species to become extinct. Despite counter arguments, overfishing is harmful and needs to be stopped because we are depleting our fishing industry, impacting the food web, and creating economical dangers. Without creating stricter regulations, the fishing industry will continue to diminish. Due to advances in technology, fishermen can access places that have never been fished. At first, it was the creation of the simple trawler boat which had a minimal impact on our environment. It was the creation of the factory fishing vessels that have taken over and led to mass amounts of overfishing. These boats use down scan sonar, side imaging, and GPS giving them an unfair advantage over the fish they are after. Using nets that are 50 meters wide and able to hold a weight greater than two medium sized planes, the boats trawl depths of up to 170 km deep. On board, the ships are processing plants. These plants process, package, and serve as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Overfishing Persuasive Essay The world's population is increasing alarmingly, and as a result, there is a bigger demand on sustainable food sources. Approximately one billion people, mainly in developing countries such as China, India, and the Philippines, are relying on fish as a major source of many nutrients, including protein. However, overfishing, which refers to the fishing industry removing more fish than can be replenished by the remaining fish, is becoming a big problem, as fish in the ocean are not an unlimited resource. Most people are not aware of it, but overfishing can affect everyone on the planet. Overfishing is a serious issue that affects both humanity and the ecosystem, and needs to be taken care of immediately. The facts make it clear: marine life is being overfished. Several poor countries that border a large body of water depend on fishing industries to make money and feed their populations. More than 50% of fish imports come from developing countries. In the...show more content... If we continue to overfish, several aquatic species may become endangered, or maybe even extinct. From there, the damage will be irreversible. The aforementioned problems will then be a reality. However, if we stop overfishing now, then those issues will become very minor and can be easily solved. By putting an end to overfishing, the fisheries won't have to stop operating, but they will have to limit the amount of fish they catch. Ocean ecosystems become healthy once again while still allowing us to use fisheries as a resource. Continuing overfishing will put an end to all fisheries because there won't be any more fish to catch at all. Therefore, the problem overfishing must be taken care of now, or the time to act will be gone Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Benefits Of Overfishing Somewhere in the world an innocent group of dolphins is getting caught and killed in a giant net used to capture thousands of fish at one time. Around 25 percent of all fish caught in nets are caught unintentionally and sometimes killed. Have you ever wondered where all the fish went? Or why the fish population is decreasing? I believe that overfishing laws need to be enforced in all bodies of water around the world because it is overall bad for the environment, for us as humans, and our needs. First of all, fish is a common food source in the world especially in areas around the ocean. People all around the world rely on fish for their main food source everyday. The fish population is severely depleting because of lots of overfishing. To show how much less fish there are, my research shows that the amount of fish consumption has gone down in the past few years. Many types of seafood have been overfished also. Places like restaurants have had to replace normal fish on the menu with similar looking and tasting fish because of the lack of seafood. Species like eel and king crab have been overfished to critically low levels. Loads of these species get caught in nets everyday with the chance to escape. Bycatch needs to be stopped during fishing everywhere. It has caused many fish and other creatures to be overfished. Bycatch means fish and other things unintentionally caught in massive drift nets used by fisherman. Fish that are not edible, harmful, or dangerous to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Overfishing Essay Overfishing is a huge issue around the world. Overfishing occurs when more fish are caught than the amount they can reproduce. This overfishing problem is a huge decline in population of fish. Due to overfishing the animals at the top of the ocean food chain such as Sharks will have no food to eat. Overfishing is a major problem for the ecosystem of the ocean. Overfishing affects the ocean ecosystem in many negative ways. Fishermen can target the fish at the top of the food chain or the bottom of the food chain, but either way it both can affect the ecosystem. " Targetedfishing of top predators eventually disrupts marine communities, causing an increased abundance of smaller marine animals at the bottom of the food chain."(WWF) ...show more content... Overfishing affects the ecosystem in a negative way. Overfishing causes a chain reaction in other populations. If one species is being overfished that fish could possibly be the prey to another species. " Herring is a vital prey species for the cod. Therefore, when herring are overfished the cod population suffers as well."(ypte) Due to one species being nearly depleted the other can possibly become depleted as well due to the marine food chain being very sensitive. Overfishing a specific species of fish can soon cause it to become extinct. Species such as the Blue–fin tuna has been fished so much along the Coast of Japan that it has become an endangered species and decreases the biodiversity of the ocean. If this," Continues, more species will be driven to extinction and aquatic ecosystems will collapse."(Revolution) Due to overfishing, the aquatic ecosystem can be in danger of collapsing. Overfishing not only affects the fish itself, but the ecosystem. If overfishing continues there may be a chance that the ocean can become completely depleted of fish. Studies show that," More than 85% of global fish stocks in our oceans are at significant risk of IUU fishing."(WWF) Overfishing causes many problems for the ecosystem of the ocean. This overfishing over–exploitation is not only in one ocean but multiple. "Several ocean areas, every single species of fish is at high or moderate risk to illegal Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Impact of Overfishing The Impact of Overfishing Overfishing has become an enormous problem all over the world. The impact of the increasing demand for fish and the advanced techniques made in the area of commercial fishing has caused some species of fish to be virtually extinct. In fact, some species like the giant bluefin tuna widely used by Japanese chefs and served in many restaurants, are now just few years away from extinction. Human demand for fish has increased enormously over the last several years, particularly since the 1950's. This is widely due to the reported health benefits of making fish a regular part of our diet. In fact, fish is the main source of protein for many people worldwide. This increased popularity has caused more business to...show more content... This program allows fishermen to be granted a percentage share of their total allowable catch. They can also be granted exclusive access to particular fishing zones, also known as territorial use rights for fishing. As long as fishermen do not exceed their allowable catch, they have greater flexibility to fish when the weather the most cooperative and the market conditions are best. Each fisherman's shares grow in value as the overall fishery improves and population of larger fish increase. This gives the fishermen personal incentive to cooperate in resource management because they stand to profit personally from the venture. In fact, in 2007, the Catch Share program was put into effect in the Gulf of Mexico the help mitigate the decline in the red snapper population. Fishermen there earned 25 percent more for their fish and wasteful catches were cut by 70 percent. And, for the first time since 1990, the banks were open for fishing all year round. While these numbers are encouraging, environmentalist and the fishing industry have different ideas and techniques that they believe will solve the problem to benefit all. However, all agree that there should be better resource management to avoid the most devastating effects that come from overfishing. Regardless of which measure is taken, it is clear that measures need to be taken now in order to preserve the ocean's delicate Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Overfishing The water resource problem in the video is overfishing. Overfishing is a problem that occurs when fishermen catch fish at a rate faster than they can reproduce. I think overfishing originated when fishermen began using bigger and better fishing nets and techniques. Better fishing equipment resulted in overfishing, which is a major water resource problem. Depletion of the fish population is a problem that could be managed. Even though, it is difficult for the depleted stocks to return to sustainable levels, and other species dependent on the depleted stocks may become imbalanced, causing further problems, it is possible to recover (MarineBio.org, 1998–2008). I do not think that my management plans would affect the community. Jobs, resources, and lifestyles would still be the same for many people. In my opinion, the only people that will be affected by my plans would be fishermen, but it would not be too bad. Fishermen would still have their jobs, but there would be a limit on the amount of fishing they could do. I personally do not think that people's lifestyle would change dramatically. Fishermen would only be able to catch what they need, and this would show them how important the resource is. A little change is good, especially if it would help the fish population increase instead of continuing to decrease. My plan would affect the resources positively because it would help the fish, which would help the environment. Reference Page Overfishing–A Global Disaster. (2007). What is overfishing.
