materials.
HOW IMPORTANT IT IS…
 Materials selection, adaptation, or writing is an important area
in ESP teaching,
 representing a practical result of effective course development
and providing students with materials
 that will prepare them with the knowledge they will need in their
future life.
Materials selection
As Ellis and Johnson (1994: 115) emphasize, the choice of
materials has a major impact on what happens in the course. This
impact is demonstrated on the following three levels:
 - It “determines what kind of language the learners will be exposed
to and, as a consequence, the substance of what they will learn in
terms of vocabulary, structures, and functions”;
 - It “has implications for the methods and techniques by which the
learners will learn”;
 - Last, “the subject of or content of the materials is an essential
component of the package from the point of view of relevance and
motivation”.
Materials are a visible product of activity,
regardless of whether such activity is useful or
even necessary
The process of materials writing may help
to make teachers more aware of what is
involved in teaching and learning
Defining
objectives
Provide a
stimulus to

•Enjoyable activities
•Opportunities to use
learners’ thinking and
skills
Provide models of correct
and appropriate language

  • 4. A large amount of the ESP teacher’s time may well be taken up in writing materials.
  • 5. HOW IMPORTANT IT IS…  Materials selection, adaptation, or writing is an important area in ESP teaching,  representing a practical result of effective course development and providing students with materials  that will prepare them with the knowledge they will need in their future life.
  • 6. Materials selection As Ellis and Johnson (1994: 115) emphasize, the choice of materials has a major impact on what happens in the course. This impact is demonstrated on the following three levels:  - It “determines what kind of language the learners will be exposed to and, as a consequence, the substance of what they will learn in terms of vocabulary, structures, and functions”;  - It “has implications for the methods and techniques by which the learners will learn”;  - Last, “the subject of or content of the materials is an essential component of the package from the point of view of relevance and motivation”.
  • 7. Materials are a visible product of activity, regardless of whether such activity is useful or even necessary The process of materials writing may help to make teachers more aware of what is involved in teaching and learning

Defining objectives Provide a stimulus to learning Good materials contain: • Interesting texts •Enjoyable activities •Opportunities to use learners’ thinking and skills Provide models of correct and appropriate language use Provide simpler ways of language Embody a view of the nature of language & learning Reflect the nature of the learning task Have a very useful function
