Zamindari system was made a hereditary right of zamindars
under the Permanent Settlement or the Zamindari Bandobast in
1793.They were made the owners of the land and were forced to
pay 89% of the total revenue to the British government. Their
own share was 11%. The system gave birth to a new class of
landlords consisting of the Rajas and Taluqdars called the
Zamindars who had the power to evict any cultivator of the soil
due to non-payment of revenue. They used oppressive methods
to collect the taxes. The peasants were compelled to take loans
fromthe moneylenders to pay unpaid rent, which made their life
miserable. On the other hand, maximum benefit went to the
Zamindars.

The ever-changing political scenario heralded the down of modern
period, especially with the coming of the Europeans to India. During this
India was exploited politically, socially, economically, and culturally. The
East India Company was established as a trading company. But it took
advantage of the political instability and gradually to cover the control
of a large part of India. In 1858 the power went into the hands of the
British crown .The 19th century witnessed various majors adopted by
the East India company to extend and consolidate its control over India
like military action, introduction of railways, Postal Service, passing
different acts etc. The revolt of 1857 was a major event but the colonial
power suppressed it ruthlessly. The British rule continued over India but
the discontentment against the colonial power strengthened the
national movement. The establishment of the Indian National Congress
had far reaching effects.
