3. Ragging
Ragging is the physical and
mental torture inflicted on
junior students by their
seniors in educational
institutions for higher
education, particularly in
professional colleges.
4. If ragging results in
suicide or permanent
physical or mental
injury it is treated as
criminal offence.
5. .Despite all precautions
and warnings, ragging
still persists in a few
colleges. but this gesture
of welcoming the junior
students by the seniors
are vast disappearing in
our educational
campuses.
6. Measures to check ragging
Every members of the faculty may be
entrusted with the care of a small group of
newly admitted students and address their
problems immediately.
Principal should address the senior students
about the psychological harm and sense of
insecurity that ragging may produce in the
minds of new students which may result in
discontinuing their studies.
7. Taking strict action against those indulging in
ragging like suspension, expulsion, barring from
pursuing their studies in any instution for a
limited period or making adverse remarks in their
transfer certificated etc.
Advising new students to avoid going all alone in
the campus for the first few weeks.
8. Installing vigilance cameras in places like
hostel, mess, entrance to halls, library, canteen,
laboratories and corridors and monitoring
student’s behavior.
9. Eve - teasing
More and more women are
taking up jobs in offices
educational institutions,
medical institutions,
commercial establishments,
and industrial units.
Women have to go to
difference places for
shopping, take children to
schools, money matters in
banks and several other
personal work.
10. Unfortunately, many young men,
both educated and semi-literates
take pleasure in passing lewd
comments or performing obscene
acts when they see
unaccompanied women in public
places.
The worst and painful news we
read or hear every day is abuse of
young females.
11. Even women working in
offices, too are subjected to
sexual harassment. Right
from the officers, office
assistants all women have to
be always alert safeguard
their dignity and modesty.
12. Preventing measures to curb eve-
teasing in public places.
No one dares to challenge the eve teasers.
Police patrolling near public places and colleges to help
to reduce fear in the minds of women.
Separate high schools and colleges separately for boys
and girls or separate sections for non-shift schools
should be considered seriously.
The evil of drinking aggravates the problem of eve
teasing. These problems may get resolved in due course
of time.
13. Value education promoting respect for the other gender,
self discipline, behaving in a decent and honourable
manner, respect for family life and morality should be
inculcated.
Elders in the family, teachers, leaders in public life
religious heads, writers and poets should be aware of
their social responsibilities as they are the role models
for many young people.
14. Corruption
Corruption is also known as
greasing the palms of
authorities and ‘speed money’.
Corruption is defined as the
illegal gratification received by
a government official or an
authority in power for violating
or bending rules to favour an
individual, company or
corporation causing losses to
the government , but yielding
quick gains to the beneficiaries.
15. This illegal act of corruption may
take place in a local government
office to favour a person ready to
give bribe or at national level
while dealing with purchases
from other countries or for
relaxing rules to favour the great
and mighty industrialists and
businessmen.
The result is the poor becomes
poorer, but the neorich corner all
the benefits of development.
16. Causes for increase in corruption
People who handle the files demand money.
Unnecessary controls and regulations which are
stated in abstract legal terms and in a round about
way, that too in English or Hindi, not intelligible
to the common man, make him vexed.
17. Eradicating corruption from public life
The undermentioned agencies are involved in
combating corruption.
Directorate of Vigilance and Anticorruption.
Cetral Bureau of Investigation.
Vigilance cells in the Police (C.I.D.) Dept.
A determined and all out effort is needed to weed out
corruption.
18. Suggestions for weeding out
corruption
There is need to reform the tax laws which should be
simplified and less burdensome.
Anti corruption laws should be enforced strictly.
Computerisation of office procedures will reduce
delay in disposal of files.
19. Lokpal, an independent authority to investigate
complaints against all constitutional authorities,
expect the president of India, should be
constituted at the Central and State levels.
Offering bribes should also be made a cognizable
offence and punished suitably.
Students should develop strong
personal attitude against giving and accepting
bribes.
