The student used various media technologies effectively throughout the construction, research, planning and evaluation of their media coursework. Blogger was used to create blog posts with embedded presentations and videos. Surveys were created using SurveyMonkey to gather useful audience research. Prezi, Google Slides and Emaze were used to create presentations displaying research findings. YouTube and Google Images allowed for in-depth analysis of genre codes and conventions. Planning was aided through tools like Pic Collage, Canva, Flipagram and Glogster. Products were constructed using Photoshop, iPhoto and Word. Hardware like a DSLR camera, microphone and lights enhanced quality. Final Cut Pro was used for video editing. In conclusion, the student demonstrated
1. EVALUATION 4
How did you use media technologies in the construction
and research, planning and evaluation stages?
2. Overall
• Blogger has been essential in my media coursework.
• My use of it has improved greatly over the course of the year as I can quickly and
efficiently produce more complex posts with embedded presentations and videos
as well as pictures and links.
• The general set up of the blog is now easier to run, such as adding page links.
• Although I could have improved my blog layout my using a more sophisticated
software, this would have used more time and been unnecessarily frustrating.
• As I result, I believe my use of this media technology was appropriate.
Blogger
3. Research
• I created three surveys with
useful questions and a variety
of sophisticated ways to
respond (for example ranking
elements).
• This gave helpful and detailed
information which was central
to the entire planning and
construction of my work.
• As a result, I believe I have
used this media technology
effectively.
• I created a Prezi presentation to
display my audience research.This
allowed me to easily and clearly
display information in an engaging
way.
• I believe I used this well as a variety
of techniques and skills have been
displayed, however, I could have
made my presentations more
interesting by using options such
as embedding videos.
SurveyMonkey Prezi
4. Research
• I made a short summary
presentation using this programme.
• Although I could have greatly
improved the skills I demonstrated
when using this media technology
(as the presentation was very
basic), this would have been
unnecessary for the content
required.Therefore, I think my use
of this media technology was
appropriate, even if not
extravagant.
• This software allowed me to
create a creative and interesting
presentation with clearly
displayed information and
incorporate more sophisticated
elements such as embedded
videos.
• I effectively used this media
technology, resulting in a
relevant and high quality
presentation.
Google Slides Emaze
5. Research
• In research, I usedYouTube to
thoroughly research codes and
conventions, as it allowed me
to access a wide range of
recent and historical horror
trailers so I could analyse and
reference them.
• I believe I used this media
technology effectively as I
used a variety of texts and
explored them and their genre
in great detail.
• I used the ‘Google Images’
search engine to view a variety
of posters and magazine
covers. In a similar way to
YouTube, this allowed me to
conduct a deep analysis of
codes and conventions in
specific texts and the genre
itself.
• As a result, I think that I have
used this media technology
well as I have managed to
select and reference many
appropriate media texts.
YouTube Google
6. Planning
• I created two mood boards to help
inspire me as to the atmosphere and
themes of my products. I even created
one with GIFs as part of the historical
basis so the mood board was more
helpful in terms of conventions from
genuine products.This shows a higher
level of technical understanding,
however, the quality significantly
diminished when exporting it so I
could have improved them by finding
a way to avoid this.
• Therefore, I believe I used this
technology quite well as the content
was selected, important, processed
(such as cutting out objects) and
arranged, although exporting them
became an issue.
• I used Canva in my costume
planning and used it to clearly
exhibit my ideas and decisions.
Although this is relatively
simple, the programme is
quite basic so this was the best
I could do without using
another programme.
• As a result, I used this
programme appropriately but
could have improved by being
more adventurous in my
choice of media technologies.
Pic Collage Canva
7. Planning
• I used an HP Photosmart 5510
printer/ scanner to upload hand
written aspects of my planning,
such as my shot plans, allowing
me to show the developments
within my planning process.
• As a result, I believe I have used
media technology creatively to
enhance the true depiction of my
improving skills/ work.
• I used this software in order to
turn my storyboard into a
video (almost like an
animation) so that it is easier
to view and gives a good sense
of what I pictured the trailer to
look like.
• I think I used this media
technology well as it was a
unique and effective decision
to efficiently exhibit over 50
sketches.
Scan Flipagram
8. Planning
• I created a few ‘glogs’ to demonstrate
planning certain elements of my products
(sound for the trailer and layout for the
poster/ magazine cover).These are
interactive posters so involve the reader
with the material (with embedded videos
or pictures that can be enlarged).
• As a result, I used this media technology
well by making an engaging presentation
of my work which will hopefully help my
coursework stand out.
• I used PowerPoint to
create the logos for my
trailer and poster as part
of my planning. I believe
this was a creative use of
media technology as this
programme was not
designed for use in this
way but resulted in
professional looking
products.
• As a result, I believe I can
adapt the uses of a range
of media technologies to
attain my desired
effects.
Glogster PowerPoint
9. Construction
• IPhoto was used on both my poster
photo and magazine cover photo.
The filters available gave the
pictures darker atmospheres that are
more appropriate for the genre.The
brightness, shadows and many other
elements are also easily adjustable,
allowing me to have complete
control over the image.
• Consequently, I used media
technology appropriately by
choosing software that allows the
full manipulation of my content.
• I used Photoshop to enhance
specific elements of the images
using ‘adjustment layers’.This
allowed me to isolate particular
areas and further the control I had
on their outcome. For example, in
the poster I highlighted trees so
make them stand out from the
dark and in the magazine cover,
her special effects makeup was
exaggerated.
• I believe I have used media
technologies effectively by using
different software to compliment
the effects that others gave.
IPhoto
Photoshop
10. Construction
• The actual ancillary products were both
created onWord as I do not have any
professional construction software and
so felt it was best to use a programme I
was comfortable with. I do not regret
this decision as I could adapt the tools
available in order to create all the
desired effects without any issues.This
ensured my products were made
efficiently and maintained a
professional standard.
• This is another example of my creativity
in adapting the purpose of media
technology.
• The title was mainly successful due to
the font. The colour and layout was
produced usingWord but the font came
from a lengthy search on
1001freefonts.com until I found the
appropriate one (DK Mothman).This use
of the internet and the websites it makes
available was crucial for an effective title,
used in all my products.
• As a result, I have shown how I can use
online resources in order to create
professional standard elements for my
coursework.

11. Construction
• I used my Nikon D5100 for all the filming
and photography. This is a high quality
camera so allowed my to create suitably
professional images/ shots by changing
aspects with manual settings.Without my
experience with this camera, I don’t
believe my products would be anywhere
near the standard they are.
• Therefore, I believe I have successfully
used complex hardware in order to
contribute to the quality of my products.
• I used a microphone from Rode with
its appropriate deadcat and boom
pole to give my dialogue and sound
effects a better quality. This added to
the near- professional nature of my
trailer so was essential to its general
impact on the audience.
• This, once again, shows how I have
effectively used hardware to enhance
elements of my products.
DSLR Shotgun Microphone
12. Construction
• I used a number of torches and
small lights but the main light
used was aWestcott light stick.
This could give a white or yellow
light at varying strengths,
allowing for a diverse range of
uses.Yellow cellophane was used
on the smaller lights to change
the light’s colour.
• This shows how I can adapt the
uses of hardware to make them
appropriate for particular shots.
• This is a professional standard editing
software which I used to create my trailer. It
allowed me to have full control over all
elements of the editing process including
speed, sound, length, filters and transitions.
As a result, I could adjust even minor
elements of my trailer which impact the
quality, suitability for industry and
conformity to conventions of real media
texts.
• As a result, I handled complex software and
had to learn to use it quickly in order to
continue will my coursework at the correct
pace, demonstrating how my intuition with
media technologies has developed.
Lights Final Cut Pro
13. Construction
• The soundtrack was created with Logic
Pro to cope with the complex layers and
sounds which I wanted to include in the
score.This was used alongside new/
current hardware such as the Roli
Seaboard, allowing more choice with a
variety of instrument synthesisers.This
allowed me to create a near-
professional score without actually
being able to play the instruments or
contact an orchestra.
• This shows how I can use modern media
technology to add professional quality
elements to my products without the
facilities usually necessary.
• I used the internet to find accessible
resources, such as websites for copyright
free images to use, for example, for my
magazine text box. As I do not have the
necessary props to create these components
myself, I had to rely on online resources.
• This shows how I can interact with online
resources appropriately to enhance my
products.
Logic Pro Internet
14. Evaluation
• I created a prezi to show
how different codes and
conventions link together in
a way that should be
engaging and interesting to
the audience and display
the information clearly.
• This shows how I can select
media technology which is
appropriate for the purpose
of a task.
• I made a storyboard with Pixton as I
could use this unique format to
show the purposes of each product
and how these compliment each
other. For example, using
backgrounds of spaces in which the
products would be seen if they were
to be genuinely distributed helps
demonstrate their usefulness.
• As a result, I believe this once again
shows how I can appropriately
select media technologies.
Prezi Pixton
15. Evaluation
• I created a stop-motion in
order to use a dramatically
different format for displaying
information.This was achieved
by taking over 100 images and
then editing them together in
Final Cut Pro.
• I think that this shows how I
can creatively use media
technology for a variety of
purposes, relevant to the task.
• SlideShare was used as it ensures
that presentations are clear and
accessible, meaning that all the
information can be understood. I
can also make these
presentations easily as the media
technology involved is very user
friendly.
• This shows how I can use media
technology that is accessible for
others and have gained fluency
when using such programmes.
Final Cut Pro/ DSLR Slideshare
16. IN CONCLUSION…
I have used media technology effectively, efficiently, creatively
and appropriately while demonstrating complex abilities,
relevant choices and maintaining a near-professional standard.
