The project was developped on Solidworks and dealt with the costruction of an Hadle mechanism, the study of its motion and the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the assembly.

Functionality:
The mechanism reported is a typical door handle mechanism. The rotation of the handle
makes spin a cam (the lock mechanism) which push the latch backward allowing so the
door to be opened.
All the parts have been created by using Solidworks as well as the assembly. In order to
minimize the waste of computational power the two rose covers and the two handle are
design from the same model on Solidworks using the option “configuration” since they
are very similar one to the other.

FEM analysis:
The component analyzed using the finite element method is the handle.
The situation that is simulated is to have the door locked and someone that is trying to
force to open it.
The material of the mechanism is Alloy steel and the force applied to the handle is 450
N.
As first design the handle had a squared hole on the bar as shown if figure.
With this design a safety factor of 1.8 comes out which is not a bad result but can be
improved.

In order to increase the SF the new handle is design without that hole which implies a
slightly bigger waste of material but ensure the Safety Factor to rise up to 2.1. This is a
good deal since having a sf over 2 is important in this industry.
