3. WHAT ARE ICT’S IN TEACHING AND LEARNING
CONTEXTS?
• Information and Communication Technologies in education refers to the use
and integration of technology through digital devices and software to
enhance the learning experiences.
• The integration of technology aims to shift away from traditional to modern
classrooms and expose learners too relevant tools to utilize and familiarize
themselves with.
4. UBIQUITOUS ICT DEVICES TO FACILITATE
TEACHING AND LEARNING
• The internet – As a component central to the availability of information,
access to free internet for educational information is paramount in exposing
learners to different kinds of information that they can compare in relation
to their classroom content
• Smartphones – Latest cellphones allow access to innovative technological
information such as SABC Educational and other educational applications.
• Television – Programs such as SABC Education provide learners from all
levels with educational content according the learners’ level of
understanding.
• Radio - Learners can listen to educational programs broadcasted on radio
stations.
5. WHY TEACH & LEARN USING ICT?
• Gen X and Millennials appreciate and
value the use of technological devices
to access information and carry out
daily activities through integration of
technology.
• Learning using ICT is ubiquitous. It
can happen anywhere at any given
time.
• ICT’S allow teachers and learner to
interact easily using software
applications such as Zoom, Microsoft
teams while at remote locations.
• Teachers can design lessons and
assessments through educational
resource platforms and allow learners
to learn at the comfort of their home
and/or context by also accessing a
6. FACILITATING AND INTEGRATING ICTS IN
EDUCATION.
• Teachers design and plan for ICT lessons as per CAPS document
requirements.
• They facilitate, mediate, and monitor learning.
• Teachers support and assist learners in engaging and familiarizing
themselves with the ICT devices and software tools.
• ICT is continuously evolving. Therefore, teachers should be aware of the
updates and integrate them in their teaching to help prepare learners to
compete in digital spaces.
7. REFLECTION AND
TEACHER DEVELOPMENT
“Teachers and learners require continuous
support and training to effectively
integrate technology initiatives” – Asinga J
(2017)
“Successful technology integration
involves the allocation of time for
teachers to experiment with new
technologies, collaborate with peers,
and the provision of professional
development opportunities” – Asinga J
(2017)
8. ADVANTAGES OF ICT’S IN
EDUCATION
For learners. For teachers.
• Allows independent learning. • Ideas for innovative lesson plans.
• Promotes innovative learning. • Opportunities for online collaboration
with other teachers.
• Providing learners with an opportunity
to discover new careers and mediums
of information.
• Realizing newer/updated pedagogical
techniques.
• Developing collaborative and
cooperative skills.
• Access to Information resources and
teacher development programs.
9. WHY ARE ICTS SIGNIFICANT IN THE 21ST
CENTURY EDUCATION?
• 4th Industrial Revolution tools enhance:
• Communication skills: Communications must
focus on building a national stakeholder
consensus based on shared visions and missions,
particularly between the seemingly antagonistic
private and public sectors.
• Technological literacy: Remote management and
maintenance of very large machines in the
energy, mining and ICT sectors, etc…
• Information literacy: Intensify public discourse to
improve public understanding of all aspects of
the 4IR.
• Problem solving skills: By providing autonomous
machine-generated services in all segments and
hierarchies of the population.
• “Technology is evolutionary in nature; today’s
invention will inspire new innovators to change it into
tomorrow’s technology in a full virtuous circle” -
Joseph Schumpeter
• These skills allow individuals with the ability to handle
dynamic situations and collaborate effectively in the
10. CONCLUSION
Considering the rapid growth of technology and
advanced technological devices; it is important that
teacher introduce technology in their classrooms to
enhance the students learning experience.
ICTs aim to expose learners to information
processing and creating authentic communication
situations while considering the learner’s autonomy,
as this allows them to learn at their own pace.
