Success Is Simple
By Philippe VanHecke, MBA
When you consider Business development
you need to address the company stage it is
in (emerging, growing, maturing, declining),
it’s internal “biological” clock: slow or fast
moving, the company size and structure and
the management style: these are the intrinsic
elements before considering an adequate
business development formula. Then I have
identified the extrinsic elements: the
company market focus (regionally,
domestically, internationally), the market
I.D. card (size, targets, demographic if
B2C.) Business Development is not sales or
marketing. Sometimes this extremely
important function is seen as an Ad-hoc
activity. However Business Development is
a much needed strategic function at the
crossroad of marketing, sales and strategic
alliances.

En route to successful entrepreneurship
business. We had a plan and a big dream: we
restructured the company assets, cut cost and
added a line of new services thru SMS Text
messaging platform adding to our technological
platform clients servers, SMS servers and other
database elements. In 2007 and less than a year
after painstaking efforts both on the operational
but also on the business development front end,
we were able to sell the business to a public
listed company on the Toronto Stock Exchange
(TSX). This experience taught me a great deal in
operational, and people management issues but
also in crafting a financing deal that included cash
and warrants. My main focus remained Business
Development with many blue chip companies.
