A focus group discussion (FGD) is
designed to find out how and why
people think, feel and behave the way
they do. FGD involves exploring
participants’ thoughts and feelings on
specific material.
5. Composition of FGD Group
Groups should be assembled with the
following characteristics:
• Age
• Sex
• Socio-economic Status
• Educational Level
• Religion
• Occupation

• Comfortable to the respondents
• Accessible by respondents

10. Things to Remember for the Moderator (1)
• When you reach your destination,
introduce yourself, and explain what you
are planning to do.
• While conducting interviews with
individuals, interview only one person at
a time.
• If there are several messages, pretest
each one separately.
11. Things to Remember for the Moderator (2)
• Let the respondents talk, do not interrupt.
• Do not let her/him feel s/he has said
something wrong.
• During pretesting, all questions must be
neutral and open-ended.
• Never ask leading questions like “What is
this couple doing?”
