Learning Objectives:
1. To describe the 3 different learning styles and clinical implications re: self regulation
skills in children with Autism.
2. To learn about various visual supports and their different uses: treatment & education
3. To develop a framework for iPad use in treatment and curricula to bridge the gap
between readiness to learn and actual performance re: social communication skills
A Message From Penina:
Autism intervention has taken on new meaning in the iEra, where the power and pitfalls
to progress can be especially challenging. Children with special needs all share the
innate desire to connect “the dots”, within themselves, and with others, so that they can
transition from being a Me to a We. This is especially crucial in this dawning age of
digital citizenship, and special education service providers and parents need to
understand the changing social communication and digital landscape. We also need to
understand that the education of these uniquely talented children, particularly those
with Autism, starts when the implemented goals and curricula:
• Take into account the child’s disorientation to person/place/time and implications
• Take into account the child’s intrinsic learning style and Theory of Mind
Research shows that children on the Autism spectrum appear to be “visual
learners”. They can greatly benefit from lessons which involve “whole body” learning,
the integration of toys and tech, and emphasize the visual modality. Research also
shows that children with Autism, appear to develop splintered acquisition of language
and social skills, and demonstrate "situation specific performance". A unified,
methodical, multi-sensory approach is needed, to collaborate on starting points for
remediation and best practices in eLearning, re: intervention using an iPad®. I’d like to
provide an introduction to that approach, in conjunction with my colleague and fellow
iPad Evangelist Karina. We’d like to help you navigate the process and parameters to

A Message From Karina:
I personally believe all children can learn and tap into their potential...it's tapping in
and finding out how they learn that is the key factor in their success! When we add in
technology to the mix, specifically the iPad and meaningful apps then we have a real
recipe for success. One of the problems I see with the 'iPad' is that people (parents,
teachers, therapists etc) are handing the iPad to the child with Autism and expecting the
child to learn. This process needs to be more meaningful. We need to be the “drivers” of
the device and how it is used.  Using Visual Supports in treatment is extremely helpful
because it provides a system and common point of reference for the educator and
student to start the learning process.
Two other frameworks which can be used for better learning outcomes are:
• Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence: To identify how a child might learn
• Bloom’s Taxonomy: To connect to higher degrees of learning
Understanding these systems is vital to preparing the child with Autism to take
that journey with you. Why? Because most of the time kids are left behind at the very
beginning of the 'learning activity' because they are lost in the instructions. I’d like to
