Different Parenting Styles Essay
There are many different ways of parenting children. Some are more favorable than others and some can even damage one's emotional future, causing
problems such as anxiety, unhappiness, and other low self–esteem issues. Although there are four distinct parenting styles, many parents are often
somewhere in between a couple on the scale. My parents often took to the authoritative style, which is known currently as the most successful
approach. The authoritative parent is involved in their child's life and is accepting as well as sensitive to their needs. Sometimes, I could see my
parents as being authoritarian, which is common because many parents find a kind of medium between these two styles. Unlike authoritative, the

I became more social, got a higher self–esteem, and realized that my problem solving skills have increased. My best friend growing up was Allison.
Her parents were a constant conversation topic for us, as they were not the best parents in the world. I guess you would call them extreme
authoritarians. They utilized extreme control, insisted on absolute obedience, and constantly criticized her. Eventually, this threw her into an all–time
low self–esteem, which is something that commonly occurs to children of authoritarian parents. Furthermore, she had become anxious and withdrawn.
Because authoritarian parents often take on a type of psychological control, which includes behaviors that intrude on and manipulate children's verbal
expression, individuality, and attachments to parents, Ally became defiant and angry as well. Her parents wanted to decide practically everything for
her, and in the process, put down her ideas and decisions and made clear that they disapproved of her friends. Authoritarian parents often withdraw
their love from their children. Ally's parents were one of these parents. An example is how her parents had supported her decision to go to her dream
college. Once she got the acceptance letter, they withdrew their blessing, along with the financial help they had promised her. She no longer has an
opportunity to go to college. Another example, and major distress to her,

Essay on An Effective Parenting Style
Parents have a major role in their children lives because of how they decided to raise their children. Parents tell their children what is right and what is
wrong. According to the Wikipedia, "Parenting style is a psychological construct representing standard strategies that parents use in their child rearing."
As parents use the technique to raise their children, they also shaped their value and personality. "Parenting style considers the balance between two
aspects of parenting, namely, control, and warmth" (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1041). The most commonly heard
parenting styles are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. Authoritative parenting is the one with most control and...show more

types of parenting is no more than .10 (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1044). It is a law to wear the seat belt at all time
when the vehicle is on the road; however it is not proven by professional that ten out of ten drivers or passenger have their seatbelt on when the vehicle

likely to wear seat belts (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1043). As authoritative and authoritarian parents believe that
seatbelts are equal to safety (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1043); therefore, they socialized and hammered the habit of
wearing seatbelt into their children's brain. In contrast, as the result of parents being so uninvolved with their children lives, they were the most
likely to risk their life on the road as they are less likely to wear seatbelts when they are in the vehicle whether as a passenger or as a driver. They risk

The feelings of the child won't be expressed because he may believe his feelings will be criticized or punished. The children will need someone to

Pin pointing a specific parenting style that I was raised by was quite difficult. I believe that most parents use different styles throughout the raising of
their children. Of course, I do understand that this paper is to select the dominate style of parenting used for my upbringing, but I was raised in two
different households. Each household had its own dominate parenting style, however most of my life I was raised by my mother, so I'll focus on her
parenting style. As I stated above, I believe parents use almost all the parenting styles in dealing with different situations. My mother was no exception
to this. She could go from authoritarian to permissive without even blinking an eye, which is why I was difficult for me to select a...show more content...
Overall, my mother was distant and didn't expect much from my siblings and me. An example of this parenting style would be when I found out I
had received a scholarship from the Heartland Foundation. When my mother found out she went on multiple social media sites to tell everyone the
good news, but she did not contact me at all. I ended up asking her to be my plus one to the scholarship dinner; I guess I'm still stuck in the loop of
trying to make her proud. On the way to the dinner the car was filled with silence. No congratulations. No "I'm proud of you" moments. Just heavy
silence. At the dinner we spoke maybe twenty words to each other. Most of these words were commenting on how nice the Bone Student Center
looked and how delicious the meal was. When the dinner ended, my mother drove me back home and said goodbye. No "I love you". Nothing but
goodbye. Another example of my mother's disengagement would be when my sister was suspended multiple times and almost expelled. My sister tried
to find attention from other people since she was receiving none at home. Her way of gaining this attention was getting into fights, and sadly, it worked.
It took three incidents to gain the attention of my mother, and this only gained her attention because she received three different tickets for the fighting

Parenting Styles
Abstract
This paper analyzes various parenting styles based on research by developmental professionals. The four basic patterns of behavior discussed here are
authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful and indulgent parenting with the latter two being classified as permissive. Characteristics typical to each of
these styles and their effect on parent and child will be explored in detail. Cultural differences will be discussed and what influences parenting has on
education. Behaviorist research will be introduced and examined for comparison to the developmental approach. The research will indicate that about
one–third of all parents use authoritative style of parenting. Regardless of the preferred style, varying factors...show more content...
Effects of neglectful parenting can also be seen in children. According to Waitley, children of neglectful parents often: lack self
–control, are confused,
have low self–esteem, are discouraged, and defy limits yet want/need limits.
Indulgent parenting is also a permissive form of parenting. Indulgent parenting can be summed up with the phrase, "Do what you want to." (Waitley)
According to Strauss, indulgent parents: do not enforce rules, do not communicate rules clearly, yield to coercion, have few expectations for mature
behavior, hide impatience or anger, ignore/accept bad behavior, and are generally warm and loving.
According to Waitley, children of indulgent parents often: have no self–control, lack social skills, lack responsibility, and have no self–discipline.
From these descriptions, research endorses the theory that parenting style influences the development of children and adolescents. Children of
authoritative parents fare best: Their social skills are high–they are likable, self–reliant, independent, and cooperative. (Feldman, 2000) It is important to
note that in many cases authoritarian and permissive parents produce children who are perfectly well adjusted. Moreover, children are born with a
particular temperament– a basic, innate disposition. The kind of temperament a baby is born with may in part elicit particular kinds of parental
child–rearing styles. (Feldman, 2000)

What Are the Parenting Styles and How Do They Affect Your Child? How a parent raises their child can affect the child later on in life. There are four
parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and neglectful (uninvolved). Each of these parenting styles can affect a child in some way.
Some parenting styles have more negative outcomes than others. Some have both positive and negative outcomes. The authoritarian parenting style is
a style in which the parent has the only say. This parenting style "is based on obedience and the expectation of a child obeying without an explanation
required" (McMillian). Authoritarian parents are more likely to discipline their children. Children of authoritarian parents don't often get...show more

Since the child is aware of why their parents set such rules, they respect their parents, and are more likely to respect the law as well. Children raised in
families with these parenting styles are "self–confident and achievement–oriented in school and get better grades than do children whose parents have
other parenting styles" ( Lifespan: Development, 203). The permissive parenting style is one in which the parents care for their child, yet they don't set
rules or discipline their child. This parenting style is high in nurturance and low in maturity demands, control, and communication. According to Joseph
Sclafani, a child psychologist,: Permissive–indulgent parents are often quite warm and accepting. They view their children as free spirits who need
lots of room to grow and flower. They are pleased to see, and encourage, free thinking and unconventional behavior. They are reluctant to set rules or
limits for fear of disturbing the natural desires of their offspring (47). Often times, children of permissive parents are manipulative. This is because the
parents submit to their children if they act out. Children of permissive parents are impulsive, the children do not learn how to control themselves.
Children brought up by this parenting style "do slightly worse in school during adolescence and are more likely to be aggressive and somewhat
immature in their behavior with peers and in school"

Diane Baumrind's Typology
Parenting Paper
Diane Baumrind's typology has two major dimensions. The first dimension is responsiveness. In the text it mentions that responsiveness "refers to the
extent in which parents respond to and meet the needs of their children." (Knox 364). This is when parents support, encourage, and foster their
children's needs. The second dimension is demandingness which is "the matter in which parents place demands on children in regard to expectations
and discipline." (Knox 364). This is about how strict a parent is and how much control these use on their children.
Diane Baumrind lays out four parenting styles. These styles are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and uninvolved. The authoritarian parent is a
parent that has high...show more content...
The next parenting style is permissive parenting. These parents are warm. Although they are warm they are not involved with their children and their
activities. They also don't have control of the behavior of their children. These parents do not have many rules and allow their children to do what they
want to do, whenever they want to do it. "Their children eat meals and go to bed when they feel like it and watch as much television as they want"
(Berk 389). In the book Infants, Children and Adolescents it mentions that these children become disobedient. It mentions that they do poorly in school,
have more antisocial behaviors, become dependent, and are rebellious.
The last parenting style is uninvolved style. This is when the parent is cold and not strict. The parent is not involved with their children. They don't
have time for their children. Children with these parents end up acquiring many problems. "poor emotional self regulation, school achievement
difficulties and frequent antisocial acts..." (Berk 389). As it mentions in Infants, Children and Adolescents, when this becomes extreme, this parenting
style can be categorizes as neglect.
My mom used the authoritative parenting style. She was warm and accepting. She was very involved in my activities. She would come to all my

Parenting Styles Research Paper
Every parent disciplines their child differently, and each style of parenting can have life–long psychological effects on the personality and character
traits of the child. Of course, no two personalities are the same – people are going to be who they want to be, regardless of their upbringing. However,
the way that parents raise their children has a lasting affect on who they become, regardless of whether the child stays in their parents teachings or not.
Studies have indicated that there are four main types of parenting. Obviously no two parents are the same either, as mentioned earlier, and therefore
these parenting styles will differ from family to family. The four parenting styles include authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and the most recently
discovered, uninvolved parenting.
Parents that are authoritarian have very strict rules for their children and high expectations that must be met. Nurture and warmth are not very well

These types of parents are more often like friends, instead of parents. Indulgent parents do not administer very many rules and do not have high
standards for the way their child should behave. These parents are willing to listen to their children, and will give them advice as they see fit, but
rarely dictate how a child should act. The psychological effects that such free choice can have on a child may result in more adolescent misconduct,
including drug use, alcoholism, and overall poor decision making. However, studies have also shown that children raised this way tend to be more
secure emotionally, more independent, mature faster, and are able to live without the help or advice of others (Thomas

The Four Types of Parenting Styles Essay

involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be
mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identifiedparenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive,

permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well...show

Failure to demonstrate manners and thereby failing to demonstrate respect is often dealt with by strict disciplinary action. Unlike the authoritarian
style of parenting, the permissive style does not place such great emphasis on adherence to manners. Manners may be encouraged but are not viewed
as a sign of a child's obedience. Permissive parents allow and often even encourage casual verbiage rather than formal conversations with their child.
Failure to hold the door for the next person or giving up a seat to a woman or elderly is seldom noticed or mentioned. Permissive parents fail to
enforce some of the simplest expressions of manners. Correction and punishment is seldom given to a child for lack of manners. According to
WWW.Consistent–parenting–advice.com children of permissive parents control their own behavior and to make their own decision. From infancy to
adult, people are making decisions all day long. How long to study for the upcoming test? What sport to play? What college to attend? As choices are
made, often goals are set to ensure maximum potential is achieved. This process of decision–making and goal setting is overbearing shadowed by the
authoritarian style of parenting.

The effects of parenting styles on children's well–being. Parenting styles are the strategies that parents use to raise their children. Moreover, these styles
are strictly correlated with a child's mental, physical, social and emotional development. Again, "the parenting styles refer to the manner in which
parents raise their children", explains ADLER University (1998). Every parent have their own ways of raising their children but, some parents raise
their children according to their traditions or religions. Consequently, the strategies used by parents can affect a child's well–being, either positively or
negatively. Therefore, styles of parenting play a very important role in the life of a child. Again, styles of parenting correlates with the kind of

"Baumrind (1967, 1971) identified three main styles of parenting", explains Swartz, de la Rey, Duncan and Townsend (2011:65). The three main styles
of parenting are authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting and permissive parenting. Furthermore, each one of these parenting styles is associated
with certain outcomes based on the behaviour of the child, the type of relationship that the child has with the parent and even the child's self–esteem.
However, according to a psychological expert Cherry (2015) "developmental psychologists have long been interested in how parents impact child
development". In brief, this might mean that, parents' actions and behaviour have a huge impact on their child, which may cause the child to adopt
the behaviour and make it a habit as they grow to be parents. So, as a parent you should always keep in mind that "your kids watch you for a living.
It's their job, it's what they do. That's why it's so important to try your best to be a good role model", declares Lehman (n.d.). I will now discuss the

Essay about Parenting Styles
Parenting styles have been grouped into three different categories: authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. The authoritarian approach to parenting
provides children with a clear set of rules which have to be followed without question or reason, while permissive parents constantly are giving into
their child's every wish. The authoritative parenting style gives children rules along with explanations for those rules, and reinforces good behavior.
Therefore parents should make sure the way they parent their children will be positive, and not negatively affect their children now or in their children's
future. According to Consistent Parenting Advice.com the authoritarian parenting style has a "Do as I say, not as I do,"...show more content...
Children raised by permissive parents usually have serious behavior problems due to the lack of discipline. On the other hand "Children from
permissive homes...have good self–esteem and better social skills," than that of children raised in an authoritarian household. (Iannelli, 2004). The
authoritative parenting style is the "In between," of both the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, and has a "Give and take approach."
Authoritative parents are very involved in their children's lives: children help around the home and in decision–making processes, and homework is
supervised. This approach to parenting raises children who are responsible, well behaved in school, have a high self–esteem, and good problem solving
skills along with decision making skills. The authoritative approach to parenting has very positive effects on children's lives presently, and in the
future. (Marsiglia, C.,Walczyk, J., Buboltz, W., Ross, D. 2007). Though the three different parenting styles have been grouped, categorized, and
labeled by professional doctors, psychiatrists, and sociologists these styles were created by parents, and for the most part with children's best interest
in mind which is one of the main similarities. The parent does not choose a parenting style the parenting style chooses the parent. However,
knowledge of the parenting styles and the effects of all three will help parents decide how they can raise their children in a way that is most

Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Children

of the trade (Lloyd, Carol. 2012)", it defines who you become, reflects your culture and represents values important in a family. Parenting style has a
long term impact on a child's development, success and outlook on life. The three styles of parenting are permissive parenting/hands–off parenting ,

The permissive parent acts in a very easy going or hands off manner. There are very few demands and/ or rules that are expected of the child. The
permissive parent is more of a friend than a parent. That, being said, could be seen as a positive or negative. Being too easy going for a child could
create boundary issues of authority. The child might not understand the concept of being humble or respecting authority when necessary. This can
create behavioral issues. "She presents herself to the child as a resource for him to use as he wishes, neither as an ideal for him to emulate, nor as an
active agent responsible for shaping or altering his ongoing or future behavior. She allows the child to regulate his own activities as much as possible,
avoids the exercise of control, and does not encourage him to obey externally defined standards (K. H.Grobman, 2008)" The authoritarian is the most
demanding and least engaged. They command the child to obey, but do not use effective methods to get the child to understand why they must do what
they are told. The authoritarian sees the child as an easily manipulated and neutral being (KH Grobman 2008). They expect the child's understanding of
authority and maturity at a very early age and improperly enforce rules on the child. Due to the high demand–low reward method, used by the
authoritarian, the child values

think it was because they had raised me already and they had another child with such a large age gap. I think their styles were different, however it
influenced the functioning of my family because we had a responsible mother who was not too strict with her decisions. We also had my father who
was a police officer, most people thought he would be very strict however he was the jokester of the family and very lenient.
3.Do you exhibit any of the common developmental consequences of the parenting style(s) exhibited by your parents? Explain.
I didn't personally but my brother has because of my father who who permissive. My brother is impulsive, disobedient, and rebellious, which are all the
characteristics of children with permissive parents.

In order to function, each family has a dynamic. I believe that styles of parenting are either formed or passed down from experience. My parents had
very opposing views when it came to raising a child and they switched their views as time went on. The maturity levels and life growing up were
extremely polar opposite between my parents. When I was born, my mother was twenty and my dad was twenty–seven and I think that played a key role
in parenting styles. My mom grew up in a large house and had two brothers, where as my dad grew up in several homes and had three sisters. My
mother had an authoritative style of parenting, while my father was permissive or uninvolved, depending on his mood.

How Parenting Styles Affect Children Essay
Introduction In this paper, I will examine how parenting style affects an individuals relationship with his or her children. According to Baumrind, there
are four main parenting styles, differentiated on levels of support and expectations. This paper focuses on parents with high support and high
expectations, who are known as authoritative parents and those who are supportive with low expectations, who are are permissive. These four different
styles of parenting lead to very different developmental outcomes for children in social, academic and emotional domains. However, this model does
not fully explain parent–child interactions because it neglects to reference the environmental context of the relationship along with any personal
differences in temperament of the child. This context introduces complexity such as personality differences, age of child and marital status of the
parents. This is an important topic to investigate because of the impact parenting style can have on developmental outcomes for both the immediate
child and for future generations.
Project Objective The purpose of this project is to explore the bidirectionality of parenting style within a family and how it affects parent–child
interactions through a case study of a mother of three using an interview. Furthermore, this project considers how changes in family structure and
personal experience influence child–rearing practices.

Parenting styles are as diverse as parents themselves. Parenting is one of the most challenging and difficult responsibilities a person can face. The way
a family is structured is called the parenting style. Parenting styles are collections of parental attitudes, practices, and non–verbal expressions that
characterize the nature of parent–child relationships. Because individuals learn how to parent from many different examples including their own

culture, the temperament of the child and parent, and parental status will influence the interactive process of that style. Most parents could benefit from
knowledge and information of these style to improve their parenting skills.Parenting style is a pattern of behavior that influences child–rearing practices.

Different Parenting Styles Essay

  • 1. Different Parenting Styles Essay There are many different ways of parenting children. Some are more favorable than others and some can even damage one's emotional future, causing problems such as anxiety, unhappiness, and other low self–esteem issues. Although there are four distinct parenting styles, many parents are often somewhere in between a couple on the scale. My parents often took to the authoritative style, which is known currently as the most successful approach. The authoritative parent is involved in their child's life and is accepting as well as sensitive to their needs. Sometimes, I could see my parents as being authoritarian, which is common because many parents find a kind of medium between these two styles. Unlike authoritative, the authoritarian...show more content... I became more social, got a higher self–esteem, and realized that my problem solving skills have increased. My best friend growing up was Allison. Her parents were a constant conversation topic for us, as they were not the best parents in the world. I guess you would call them extreme authoritarians. They utilized extreme control, insisted on absolute obedience, and constantly criticized her. Eventually, this threw her into an all–time low self–esteem, which is something that commonly occurs to children of authoritarian parents. Furthermore, she had become anxious and withdrawn. Because authoritarian parents often take on a type of psychological control, which includes behaviors that intrude on and manipulate children's verbal expression, individuality, and attachments to parents, Ally became defiant and angry as well. Her parents wanted to decide practically everything for her, and in the process, put down her ideas and decisions and made clear that they disapproved of her friends. Authoritarian parents often withdraw their love from their children. Ally's parents were one of these parents. An example is how her parents had supported her decision to go to her dream college. Once she got the acceptance letter, they withdrew their blessing, along with the financial help they had promised her. She no longer has an opportunity to go to college. Another example, and major distress to her, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on An Effective Parenting Style Parents have a major role in their children lives because of how they decided to raise their children. Parents tell their children what is right and what is wrong. According to the Wikipedia, "Parenting style is a psychological construct representing standard strategies that parents use in their child rearing." As parents use the technique to raise their children, they also shaped their value and personality. "Parenting style considers the balance between two aspects of parenting, namely, control, and warmth" (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1041). The most commonly heard parenting styles are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. Authoritative parenting is the one with most control and...show more content... Statistically, the number difference for adolescents with authoritative and uninvolved parents is higher than .30. Compare to the according to one of the tables provided by the study, there was no significant difference between authoritarian and permissive parenting; the differences within the two types of parenting is no more than .10 (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1044). It is a law to wear the seat belt at all time when the vehicle is on the road; however it is not proven by professional that ten out of ten drivers or passenger have their seatbelt on when the vehicle is in action. The same study from American Academy Pediatrics tells adolescents with controlling parent, authoritative and authoritarian, are most likely to wear seat belts (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1043). As authoritative and authoritarian parents believe that seatbelts are equal to safety (Ginsburg, Durbin, Garcias–Espana, Kalicka, and Winston, p. 1043); therefore, they socialized and hammered the habit of wearing seatbelt into their children's brain. In contrast, as the result of parents being so uninvolved with their children lives, they were the most likely to risk their life on the road as they are less likely to wear seatbelts when they are in the vehicle whether as a passenger or as a driver. They risk their life two times more than Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay on Parenting Styles Reflection Paper. Mr. and Mrs. HarshВHeart believe in the importance of stern discipline and impose strict rules that they expect their children to obey without question. They penalize behavior harshly, frequently with spanking. Mr. and Mrs. Easygoing do not use punishment to enforce their rules and believe in natural consequences teaching lessons and setting limits on behavior. They have regular family meetings with their children to discuss household rules and their importance to the family dynamics. These styles of parenting have their advantages and disadvantages. There are ethical and unethical issues when it comes to discipline with punishment styles as well. The advantages and disadvantages of The HarshВHeart family can...show more content... The children can become rebellious, if the parents are just strict but do not allow much or high expectations or do not guide their children, the children may not learn right from wrong themselves. The child may simply just behave when parents are around. Some strict parents are not open to ideas and forget to communicate with their children. Which give their children communication problems. The child will feel less confident and more insecure. The feelings of the child won't be expressed because he may believe his feelings will be criticized or punished. The children will need someone to confide in and the parent may not be available for this role. "Studies of Spanish and Brazilian adolescents have reported that teens from authoritarian homes had lower selfВesteem than did teens from authoritative or permissive families (Martinez and Garcia 2007Нѕ Martinez and Garcia 2008)." Secrets and lies manifest within the relationship between the child and parent. When children are under the pressure of strict rules, they learn how to avoid punishment through lies and deceit. This leads to lying about places they are going and friends they hang out with and also activities they do. Sometimes the child in a strict household does not learn to make responsible situations because the decision was always made for them. This can lead to dangerous outcomes and wrongful Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Parenting Style Of Parenting Styles Pin pointing a specific parenting style that I was raised by was quite difficult. I believe that most parents use different styles throughout the raising of their children. Of course, I do understand that this paper is to select the dominate style of parenting used for my upbringing, but I was raised in two different households. Each household had its own dominate parenting style, however most of my life I was raised by my mother, so I'll focus on her parenting style. As I stated above, I believe parents use almost all the parenting styles in dealing with different situations. My mother was no exception to this. She could go from authoritarian to permissive without even blinking an eye, which is why I was difficult for me to select a...show more content... Overall, my mother was distant and didn't expect much from my siblings and me. An example of this parenting style would be when I found out I had received a scholarship from the Heartland Foundation. When my mother found out she went on multiple social media sites to tell everyone the good news, but she did not contact me at all. I ended up asking her to be my plus one to the scholarship dinner; I guess I'm still stuck in the loop of trying to make her proud. On the way to the dinner the car was filled with silence. No congratulations. No "I'm proud of you" moments. Just heavy silence. At the dinner we spoke maybe twenty words to each other. Most of these words were commenting on how nice the Bone Student Center looked and how delicious the meal was. When the dinner ended, my mother drove me back home and said goodbye. No "I love you". Nothing but goodbye. Another example of my mother's disengagement would be when my sister was suspended multiple times and almost expelled. My sister tried to find attention from other people since she was receiving none at home. Her way of gaining this attention was getting into fights, and sadly, it worked. It took three incidents to gain the attention of my mother, and this only gained her attention because she received three different tickets for the fighting from the police Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay on Parenting Styles Parenting Styles Abstract This paper analyzes various parenting styles based on research by developmental professionals. The four basic patterns of behavior discussed here are authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful and indulgent parenting with the latter two being classified as permissive. Characteristics typical to each of these styles and their effect on parent and child will be explored in detail. Cultural differences will be discussed and what influences parenting has on education. Behaviorist research will be introduced and examined for comparison to the developmental approach. The research will indicate that about one–third of all parents use authoritative style of parenting. Regardless of the preferred style, varying factors...show more content... Effects of neglectful parenting can also be seen in children. According to Waitley, children of neglectful parents often: lack self –control, are confused, have low self–esteem, are discouraged, and defy limits yet want/need limits. Indulgent parenting is also a permissive form of parenting. Indulgent parenting can be summed up with the phrase, "Do what you want to." (Waitley) According to Strauss, indulgent parents: do not enforce rules, do not communicate rules clearly, yield to coercion, have few expectations for mature behavior, hide impatience or anger, ignore/accept bad behavior, and are generally warm and loving. According to Waitley, children of indulgent parents often: have no self–control, lack social skills, lack responsibility, and have no self–discipline. From these descriptions, research endorses the theory that parenting style influences the development of children and adolescents. Children of authoritative parents fare best: Their social skills are high–they are likable, self–reliant, independent, and cooperative. (Feldman, 2000) It is important to note that in many cases authoritarian and permissive parents produce children who are perfectly well adjusted. Moreover, children are born with a particular temperament– a basic, innate disposition. The kind of temperament a baby is born with may in part elicit particular kinds of parental child–rearing styles. (Feldman, 2000) Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. What Are the Parenting Styles and How Do They Affect Your Child? How a parent raises their child can affect the child later on in life. There are four parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and neglectful (uninvolved). Each of these parenting styles can affect a child in some way. Some parenting styles have more negative outcomes than others. Some have both positive and negative outcomes. The authoritarian parenting style is a style in which the parent has the only say. This parenting style "is based on obedience and the expectation of a child obeying without an explanation required" (McMillian). Authoritarian parents are more likely to discipline their children. Children of authoritarian parents don't often get...show more content... Since the child is aware of why their parents set such rules, they respect their parents, and are more likely to respect the law as well. Children raised in families with these parenting styles are "self–confident and achievement–oriented in school and get better grades than do children whose parents have other parenting styles" ( Lifespan: Development, 203). The permissive parenting style is one in which the parents care for their child, yet they don't set rules or discipline their child. This parenting style is high in nurturance and low in maturity demands, control, and communication. According to Joseph Sclafani, a child psychologist,: Permissive–indulgent parents are often quite warm and accepting. They view their children as free spirits who need lots of room to grow and flower. They are pleased to see, and encourage, free thinking and unconventional behavior. They are reluctant to set rules or limits for fear of disturbing the natural desires of their offspring (47). Often times, children of permissive parents are manipulative. This is because the parents submit to their children if they act out. Children of permissive parents are impulsive, the children do not learn how to control themselves. Children brought up by this parenting style "do slightly worse in school during adolescence and are more likely to be aggressive and somewhat immature in their behavior with peers and in school" Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Diane Baumrind's Typology Parenting Paper Diane Baumrind's typology has two major dimensions. The first dimension is responsiveness. In the text it mentions that responsiveness "refers to the extent in which parents respond to and meet the needs of their children." (Knox 364). This is when parents support, encourage, and foster their children's needs. The second dimension is demandingness which is "the matter in which parents place demands on children in regard to expectations and discipline." (Knox 364). This is about how strict a parent is and how much control these use on their children. Diane Baumrind lays out four parenting styles. These styles are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and uninvolved. The authoritarian parent is a parent that has high...show more content... The next parenting style is permissive parenting. These parents are warm. Although they are warm they are not involved with their children and their activities. They also don't have control of the behavior of their children. These parents do not have many rules and allow their children to do what they want to do, whenever they want to do it. "Their children eat meals and go to bed when they feel like it and watch as much television as they want" (Berk 389). In the book Infants, Children and Adolescents it mentions that these children become disobedient. It mentions that they do poorly in school, have more antisocial behaviors, become dependent, and are rebellious. The last parenting style is uninvolved style. This is when the parent is cold and not strict. The parent is not involved with their children. They don't have time for their children. Children with these parents end up acquiring many problems. "poor emotional self regulation, school achievement difficulties and frequent antisocial acts..." (Berk 389). As it mentions in Infants, Children and Adolescents, when this becomes extreme, this parenting style can be categorizes as neglect. My mom used the authoritative parenting style. She was warm and accepting. She was very involved in my activities. She would come to all my school events and plays. My Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 9. Parenting Styles Research Paper Every parent disciplines their child differently, and each style of parenting can have life–long psychological effects on the personality and character traits of the child. Of course, no two personalities are the same – people are going to be who they want to be, regardless of their upbringing. However, the way that parents raise their children has a lasting affect on who they become, regardless of whether the child stays in their parents teachings or not. Studies have indicated that there are four main types of parenting. Obviously no two parents are the same either, as mentioned earlier, and therefore these parenting styles will differ from family to family. The four parenting styles include authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and the most recently discovered, uninvolved parenting. Parents that are authoritarian have very strict rules for their children and high expectations that must be met. Nurture and warmth are not very well expressed by this type of parent. They are very demanding, but when they are demanded of something, they are...show more content... These types of parents are more often like friends, instead of parents. Indulgent parents do not administer very many rules and do not have high standards for the way their child should behave. These parents are willing to listen to their children, and will give them advice as they see fit, but rarely dictate how a child should act. The psychological effects that such free choice can have on a child may result in more adolescent misconduct, including drug use, alcoholism, and overall poor decision making. However, studies have also shown that children raised this way tend to be more secure emotionally, more independent, mature faster, and are able to live without the help or advice of others (Thomas Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There are four commonly identifiedparenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Unlike the authoritarian style of parenting, the permissive style does not place such great emphasis on adherence to manners. Manners may be encouraged but are not viewed as a sign of a child's obedience. Permissive parents allow and often even encourage casual verbiage rather than formal conversations with their child. Failure to hold the door for the next person or giving up a seat to a woman or elderly is seldom noticed or mentioned. Permissive parents fail to enforce some of the simplest expressions of manners. Correction and punishment is seldom given to a child for lack of manners. According to WWW.Consistent–parenting–advice.com children of permissive parents control their own behavior and to make their own decision. From infancy to adult, people are making decisions all day long. How long to study for the upcoming test? What sport to play? What college to attend? • 11. Parenting Styles Essay The effects of parenting styles on children's well–being. Parenting styles are the strategies that parents use to raise their children. Moreover, these styles are strictly correlated with a child's mental, physical, social and emotional development. Again, "the parenting styles refer to the manner in which parents raise their children", explains ADLER University (1998). Every parent have their own ways of raising their children but, some parents raise their children according to their traditions or religions. Consequently, the strategies used by parents can affect a child's well–being, either positively or negatively. Therefore, styles of parenting play a very important role in the life of a child. "Baumrind (1967, 1971) identified three main styles of parenting", explains Swartz, de la Rey, Duncan and Townsend (2011:65). The three main styles of parenting are authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting and permissive parenting. Furthermore, each one of these parenting styles is associated with certain outcomes based on the behaviour of the child, the type of relationship that the child has with the parent and even the child's self–esteem. However, according to a psychological expert Cherry (2015) "developmental psychologists have long been interested in how parents impact child development". In brief, this might mean that, parents' actions and behaviour have a huge impact on their child, which may cause the child to adopt the behaviour and make it a habit as they grow to be parents. So, as a parent you should always keep in mind that "your kids watch you for a living. It's their job, it's what they do. That's why it's so important to try your best to be a good role model", declares Lehman (n.d.). I will now discuss the authoritarian Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay about Parenting Styles Parenting styles have been grouped into three different categories: authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. The authoritarian approach to parenting provides children with a clear set of rules which have to be followed without question or reason, while permissive parents constantly are giving into their child's every wish. The authoritative parenting style gives children rules along with explanations for those rules, and reinforces good behavior. Therefore parents should make sure the way they parent their children will be positive, and not negatively affect their children now or in their children's future. According to Consistent Parenting Advice.com the authoritarian parenting style has a "Do as I say, not as I do,"...show more content... Children raised by permissive parents usually have serious behavior problems due to the lack of discipline. On the other hand "Children from permissive homes...have good self–esteem and better social skills," than that of children raised in an authoritarian household. (Iannelli, 2004). The authoritative parenting style is the "In between," of both the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, and has a "Give and take approach." Authoritative parents are very involved in their children's lives: children help around the home and in decision–making processes, and homework is supervised. This approach to parenting raises children who are responsible, well behaved in school, have a high self–esteem, and good problem solving skills along with decision making skills. The authoritative approach to parenting has very positive effects on children's lives presently, and in the future. (Marsiglia, C.,Walczyk, J., Buboltz, W., Ross, D. 2007). Though the three different parenting styles have been grouped, categorized, and labeled by professional doctors, psychiatrists, and sociologists these styles were created by parents, and for the most part with children's best interest in mind which is one of the main similarities. The parent does not choose a parenting style the parenting style chooses the parent. However, knowledge of the parenting styles and the effects of all three will help parents decide how they can raise their children in a way that is most Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There are very few demands and/ or rules that are expected of the child. The permissive parent is more of a friend than a parent. That, being said, could be seen as a positive or negative. Being too easy going for a child could create boundary issues of authority. The child might not understand the concept of being humble or respecting authority when necessary. This can create behavioral issues. "She presents herself to the child as a resource for him to use as he wishes, neither as an ideal for him to emulate, nor as an active agent responsible for shaping or altering his ongoing or future behavior. She allows the child to regulate his own activities as much as possible, avoids the exercise of control, and does not encourage him to obey externally defined standards (K. H.Grobman, 2008)" The authoritarian is the most demanding and least engaged. They command the child to obey, but do not use effective methods to get the child to understand why they must do what they are told. The authoritarian sees the child as an easily manipulated and neutral being (KH Grobman 2008). They expect the child's understanding of authority and maturity at a very early age and improperly enforce rules on the child. Due to the high demand–low reward method, used by the authoritarian, the child values Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. How Parenting Styles Affect Children Essay Introduction In this paper, I will examine how parenting style affects an individuals relationship with his or her children. According to Baumrind, there are four main parenting styles, differentiated on levels of support and expectations. This paper focuses on parents with high support and high expectations, who are known as authoritative parents and those who are supportive with low expectations, who are are permissive. These four different styles of parenting lead to very different developmental outcomes for children in social, academic and emotional domains. However, this model does not fully explain parent–child interactions because it neglects to reference the environmental context of the relationship along with any personal differences in temperament of the child. This context introduces complexity such as personality differences, age of child and marital status of the parents. This is an important topic to investigate because of the impact parenting style can have on developmental outcomes for both the immediate child and for future generations. Project Objective The purpose of this project is to explore the bidirectionality of parenting style within a family and how it affects parent–child interactions through a case study of a mother of three using an interview. Furthermore, this project considers how changes in family structure and personal experience influence child–rearing practices.
