Despite popular belief, discrimination occurs every day worldwide. It occurs for different reasons, but is detrimental to any company or individual. The
judgments that occur based on physical appearance, height, weight, gender, and race are affecting the potential professional careers of many. Many
companies are limiting their full potential due to the fact that they are discriminating interviewees and employees based upon physical traits. It lessens
the chances of developing a strong staff due to the stereotypes and generalizations that discrimination lends itself to. Great candidates are being turned
away due to the false pretenses that discrimination brings. Although there are laws and organizations protecting the rights of workers, there has not
been a stop put to discrimination.
Discrimination against one's appearance includes a wide variety of aspects. There is discrimination due to weight, height, hair color, skin color, hair
style, clothing, jewelry... the list continues. Each of these aspects carries a stereotype or generalization. Overweight individuals, or not physically fit,
persons are often perceived to be lazy or undisciplined. That being said, employers tend to have a negative connotation towards overweight
interviewees. Deborah Rhode, law professor and author of the book The Beauty Bias: The Injustice of Appearance in Life and Law, conducted a study

Lookism is a form of discrimination based on appearance that many people face every day especially in the work force which can lead them to have
problems financially, socially, and psychologically. Every day many people are discriminated based on their sex, religion, education, and so on and so

We make women believe that they have to be a certain height, weight, and have other desirable features in order to be beautiful. Not only do we teach
this to women but also to society which means when it comes to service or entertainment, there is a demand for attractive women. According to Julie
Tappero, there have been three cases in which women were discriminated based on their looks. One case of lookism involves Debrahlee Lorenzana,
who sued Citibank after they fired her because she wore clothes that were distracting to her male coworkers and because she was "too hot" (Tappero
par. 18). In this particular case, she was apparently too attractive for the job. Lookism is not a concept tied to unattractive people but rather to all.
Another case she mentioned was Annette McConnell, who weighed 300 pounds and was removed from her job because her supervisor said
"people don't like to buy clothes from fat people." (Tappero par. 18). The last case she mentioned included Cassandra Smith, who sued Hooters after
she was told to join a gym and "lose weight and improve her looks." (Tappero par. 18). All of these women were fired from their job due to the fact that

judge and discriminate other people based on appearance, yet no one wants to be judged based on their looks. So who are we to judge? No two
people have the same looks, the same talents, or the same capabilities. Everyone is unique in their own way. One's physical appearance does not

this introduction section, the authors first provide some background material as to societal norms concerning "attractiveness," the existence of
appearance discrimination in society, especially regarding employment, and the presence of a certain "preferring the pretty" norm, and consequently

The next section of the paper is the legal environment, wherein the authors initially discuss the fundamental employment law doctrine in the USA –
employment at–will; and then the authors examine important civil rights laws – Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in
