Territorial Expansion Unity
Territorial expansion played a major part in national unity socially, economically and politically. As more settlers and immigrants came to America,
the need for more land grew, forcing people westward. People of many different backgrounds migrated and settled among each other, creating new and
diverse communities. As new land was discovered, the government would decide which states would become slave states and which states would
become free state, thus creating political differences between the citizens. Economically, it made sense to move westward to where there was more
land for farming and helped create the cotton industry towards the 1850's. Socially, as people migrated to new territories, they began to meet new
people and learn about

Keny A National Leader Of National Unity
Chapter Two
The Kenyan Cases in Perspective
2.1 Background and context
The 2007 general elections in Kenya was a watershed event in the history of the country. Unprecedented violence broke out in many parts of the
country immediately Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity (PNU) was declared the winner of the presidential poll and sworn in on 30th
December 2007. The violence escalated as the leader of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Raila Odinga, immediately rejected the outcome of the
poll. Such violence had never occurred in Kenya before and it had devastating consequences. The violence, commonly referred to as Post–Election
Violence (PEV), continued for the next 14 days after Kibaki was declared the winner and according to the Commission of Inquiry into Post–Election
Violence report (CIPEV or WAKI report), it led to 1,133 deaths, rape of approximately 3,000 women, severe injuries to 3,561 persons, massive
destruction of both government and private property and displacement of over 300,000 people. Kenya had not experienced violence of such gravity
before as previous ethnic clashes documented by the Akiwumi Commission which was commissioned in 1998 and the report released in 2002.
Although declaration of Kibaki as the duly elected president is what sparked the violence, Waki report and other agencies examined deep–seated issues
which played a central role in causing the violence and these include; first is the culture of impunity in the country and politicization of

INTEGRATION AND NATIONAL UNITY
1.0 Introduction
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Malaysia is a unique country. It is made up of multi–ethnic group who are living in harmony. Conflict among ethnic group is rare and even if conflict
occurs, is not to the extent of destroying the country. In fact, it is the diversity that drives the development of the country and makes this country
colourful. Malaysia has been recognized by the world as a model for other plural societies. The concept of 'unity in diversity' is always insisted by the
leaders. The concept is now supported with the '1 Malaysia' concept which is introduced by the current Prime Minister. The Malaysian government is
always put efforts to ensure the...show more content...
In general, there are three main obstacles that the country has to face and resolve. They are prejudice, communalism and ethnocentrism.
a) Prejudice
Do you know what prejudice is? It refers to the attitude towards others based on evidences which is not concrete and might be wrong. In Malaysia
context, this kind of pre–judgmental attitude still exists among races even though much positive information is provided.
b) Racism
Communalism refers to the attitude of favouring one's own ethnic group. This kind of feeling is also prevalent in Malaysia. For example, the political
parties that exist in Malaysia are still on ethnic base. UMNO represents the Malays, MCA and Gerakan represent the Chinese, MIC represents the
Indians and many others. Each political party will fight for the interests of its ethnic. It happens in the country where there are some companies refuse
to hire those who cannot speak certain language that belongs to one ethnic group.
c) Ethnocentrism
It is a belief that one's own culture is superior to that of others. Due to this feeling, any element from another culture that is different with one's own
culture, is considered wrong, bad or even dangerous. Just like the feeling that people of Israel think about themselves that is they are the chosen people
of Allah SWT.
2. Activities
From the discussion above, can you give example of each kind of obstacles mentioned?

Should John F Kennedy Encourage Unity As A Nation
The quoted source is selected from an address by past U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and it is first and foremost a plea for national unity. It implores
Americans to look not to their own needs, but to the needs of the country, and in doing so choose to serve selflessly instead of selfishly. Given the
tension of the cold war that at the time gripped the country, is it understandable that Kennedy should choose to encourage unity as a nation, and
because of its underlying purpose to motivate against a rival nation–state, it is undoubtable that this quote comes from a nationalist perspective. The
perspective behind the quote is that the United States must triumph over countries that threaten its position as a democratic world power. All that

Basics Concepts of Unity and Integration
BASICS CONCEPTS OF UNITY AND INTEGRATION Unity is generally known as the united of different social and cultural backgrounds, into one
physical entity. National unity is one of the targets of government policies in task to promote the greater integration amongst different race, different
background of country's committees. The unity of the country will be exist when the sharing of power, a democratic government sound economic

norms. As we...show more content...
Others groups of assimilation is language or linguistics assimilation. These assimilation will involve the language shift which is speech language of
the community will shift into the common language of the majority community. For example, in Malaysia it already has their own federal language
which is Bahasa Malaysia as their federal language. Sociology assimilation is one of the assimilation types which is involve merging or blending of
minority communities into the majority communities. In Malaysia, the assimilation will be started from early and for example from the preschool
itself. The students or the kids will being teaching how to react and socialize with other people. In primary school also the student will be teach
'Pendidikan Moral" as compulsory subject to them to learn. Other than that by learning our federal language also can be easy to us to communicate
with others.
AMALGAMATION Amalgamation is the process of combining and uniting multiple or various entities into one form of entity. Amalgamation is
different when compared with assimilation. Assimilation is a concept of process to make non Malay to Malay identity. While, amalgamation is
process which is adopts different cultures and bring them together in one nation path. It will dispose old concept or old believes, of being individual
Malays, Indians, and Chinese and whatever, and becoming Malaysians and also being to accept all those cultures and practices as their own ways.

Unity Bank Merger Case
The merger and acquisition of Delta by Unity Bank forces the integration of two companies with different core competencies, Information Systems and
organizational structures and cultures. The CIO of operations, Stuart Irving must decide on the best strategy that would maximize the benefits of the
merger by leveraging synergies against the potential costs and risks. Following the recommendation of the IT Governance Institute, newly merged
company should establish effective duopoly IT governance with special focus on strategic alignment. Executive and department level steering
committees consisting of members of both companies should be granted decision rights with respect to strategic direction, resource allocation, and

This is our second recommendation that focuses on risk and liability reduction and regulatory compliance. The risks associated with the merger of the
two companies were identified as financial and resulted in Unity's Board of Director's mandate to save $6M in 3 years, operational stemming from
disturbance in operations resulting from merger of IT systems, and organizational resulting from differences in corporate structure, culture,

Special Top position of the Islamic World Muslim world, with almost a billon and a half population, and so many features of climate and geography,

I see that there are plannings to making war between Shiite and Sunni. Killings and explosions that occur in mosques, Hosainiehs, the congregational

Unity In America
The America I Believe In Oliver Kemper said, "The foundation of freedom is unity." So if we want America to stay free, the first thing we need is
unity. I believe in an America where we are unified as one. Unity will create more harmony in America. After 9/11, America was unified and all were
patriotic. People throughout the nation were supporting the military, and American flags were flying everywhere. America was united as one, and we
all felt that the people who attacked us had hurt all of us directly. We were determined that whoever had done this to was going to pay for it. There
weren't any riots or protests. Nobody was worried about whom was offending who and who was receiving more of one thing than another. It did not

Canada
In lots of ways unity and conflict were themes in Canada. Conflict in Canada was showed largely in the rebellion and French and Indian War. The
French speakers in lower Canada were lead into rebellion by Papineau and the English speakers in upper Canada by Mackinzie. The French and
Indian War was a war between longtime rivals France and British in North America. It started at the Ohio River Valley. The causes for the war were
past rivalry, competition in fur trade, rival native allies, and land disputes. The French and Indian War was called the 7 year war, it started in 1754.

CPPS Policy Factsheet: National Unity CPPS is pleased to bring to you its "CPPS Policy Fact Sheet" on national unity. In this factsheet, we will look
at government policies which affect national unity and explore their effects on social cohesion and integrity in Malaysia. BACKGROUND Malaysia is
one of the most plural and heterogeneous countries in the world, with three major ethnic groups – Malay, Chinese, and Indian – plus several other
indigenous tribes. It has a checkered history, having been under four different colonial powers at one time or another since the 16th century. This ethnic
and cultural diversity is reflected in the wide variety of languages spoken and religions practiced in Malaysia; even within the same ethnic...show more

For religious discrimination, the same figures stand at 82% for the Malays and 53% for others. (CPPS Minda Muda study) Recent polls suggest that
ethnic inequality is the 2nd–most pressing issues faced by Malaysians, at 17%, with only price hikes and inflation considered more pressing, coming
in at 20%. 63% are somewhat or very dissatisfied with government efforts to address ethnic inequality. (Merdeka Centre Voter Opinion Poll 4 th
Quarter 2007) Article 153 of the Federal Constitution states: "It shall be the responsibility of the Yang di
–Pertuan Agong to safeguard the special
position of the Malays and natives of any of the States of Sabah and Sarawak and the legitimate interests of other communities in accordance with
the provisions of this Article." Article 153 has been used to permit quotas in the provision of public scholarships, civil service positions, and business
licences. EDUCATION POLICIES Young Chinese Malaysians are considerably dissatisfied with the state of the education system when it comes to
promoting national unity. (CPPS Minda Muda study) 64% of Chinese parents feel the education system is preparing students to be tolerant towards
those of other races and religions, as opposed to 78% of Malay parents and 83% of Indian parents. (Merdeka Research Centre Education System

National Unity And Its Effect On The Nation
In one way or another most people want to feel as though they belong somewhere, and feel secure and safe. This can be found in a variety of ways.
History teaches us that a country that has a foundation of national unity is important and will be able to thrive in the best ways possible to reach its
potential. Unity is when people join and work together toward a common goal, and is often considered necessary for survival. A previous president
of the United States, Abraham Lincoln , stated "A house divided cannot stand" (2). National unity is beneficial in so many ways, and will lead the
nation toward progress and posterity. Unity provides a sense of security and the feeling of safety. It provides an environment of peace and love. Unity
strengthens the nation, as well as individuals. It leads toward a bigger effort into fighting corruption and providing a better place for all. Unity
encourages a sense of pride in oneself and their country, and provides opportunities for excellence in many ways.
New Zealand consists of many different types of people, cultures, religions and interests. It is so diverse, and continues to grow in diversity. Each
individual has their own identity. However, being born and raised in New Zealand, something that puts aside all those differences, unifying the nation
is New Zealand 's' national love affair of rugby. The influence of rugby is much more intimate than in many other places, and it starts at the grassroots
level. The sport was developed

Challenges of Caribbean Society in Achieving National Unity
There have been many attempts for the Caribbean nations to come together as one, leading to national unity in the region. Some attempts at unity
include: Federation, CARICOM (Caribbean Community), CARIFTA (Caribbean Free Trade Association), CDB (
Caribbean Development Bank), UWI
(University of the West Indies), CXC (Caribbean Examinations Council), and recently CSME (Caribbean Single Market and Economy), which is still
in the process of being carried out. The Caribbean's aim is to come together socially, economically, and politically and to try to work as one nation.
However, there are many cultural differences between the countries,...show more content...
In government with all different religions on the leaders table, many arguments will come to, as with different religions come different values. For
example, the Muslims would more than likely suggest that having more than one wife is not considered bigamy and would make it law that one
could have more than one. The Christians would go against that, as they believe that only one wife is godly, and it would be extremely hard for a
compromise to be made. As a single religion would be ideal for an amalgamation of countries to cooperate, and it would be impossible to convert
everyone to any one religion, then religion is one big obstacle in the way of national unity.
Another issue, which is present, is the fact that in the different countries, different languages and dialects of languages are spoken. A language barrier
is a serious impediment to the success of national unity. If proper communication cannot go on, then proper conclusions cannot be made, and any
progress politically is extremely slow. Also, the people will not feel a sense of Caribbean unity, if they cannot understand or relate to their other
Caribbean residents. Lots of segregation of language will occur if national unity was achieved, and that would deceive the whole idea of unity.
With many different cultures and religions, come many different festivals and bank

There are many examples in Canadian History of unity and conflict. An example of unity is the War of 1812. This is an example of unity because it
allowed our country to gain more land from the British. Another example of unity is World war 1 and 2. W.W. 1&2 are examples of unity because it
advanced the cause of civil rights. Some examples of conflict are the French and Indian war, and the rebellion. The French and Indians did not fight
alone. The French fought along with Huron and the Indians also fought with the Iroquois. This was a conflict because it was the main reason for the
Revolutionary war. Another topic based on Canadian history are the three different types of Canadians which are the French, British, and the Native

Reflection About Unity
How I learned the Importance of Unity Every time I go on social media, I notice that the country I live in is slowly becoming more and more
divided. In a country where innocent Black lives are taken by those who promised them living rights, where Muslims are labeled as terrorists,
where undocumented immigrants are threatened to be deported, where innocent lives are suffering, it is difficult to find the light in darkness.
America is a land filled with an abundance amount of diversity with people from different races, cultures, countries, languages and religions. The
only ingredient that is missing to help society tackle these challenging times filled with hatred and ignorance, is unity. Unity is the state of being
united or joined as a whole. Unity is what makes individuals from different backgrounds unite together to build bridges to cross over tough times.
As I've become older and wiser, I've learned that with unity and diversity of all people, the world can morph into a more accepting society.
Throughout elementary school and middle school, I was naive in not knowing how much silence and hate there was in our country. I would never
hear about issues that our country was facing such as discrimination and racism. I was living in my own happy bubble and not stepping outside of it
to face the truth. However, when I entered high school, reality hit me smack on the face. My dark skin color was suddenly pushed into darkness while
others were easily able to shine. My

Lectures on islamic education and religion are delievered in Urdu throughout Pakistan. The religious leaders, mystics and sufi poets spread the light of

numbers to enable the muslims to understand them properly. In this way urdu language has played a pivotal role in keeping the Muslim nationhood
intact.
A medium of national cohesion:
Having close resemblence with all the regional languages of Pakistan and common vocalbury, script and derivation from same primary sources, Urdu in
Pakistan has become a key to the national cohesion and unity. Urdu language is the medium of instructions in all government schools in Pakistan.
Politrical science, History, Islamic Studies and many other subjects are taught upto the masters level in the urdu language. The government is making
systematic efforts to impart advanced eduacation in scuence and technology in Urdu language.

Canadians during World War 1 as a result of the first conscription. Primitively, King's plan was not to force conscription, as his campaign slogan was
"Conscription if necessary but not necessarily," as well as he also ruled out overseas conscription entirely in 1939 as a promise to the citizens of Canada
. King was aware of the strong/negative francophone feelings towards conscription and knew much of his support in the election as a result of his
repeated pledges about conscription came from the French– Canadians. War broke out in 1939, shortly after his election, and only a year later he

For centuries, globalization has increasingly knitted together the world and created unity out of great diversity. Coca Cola, Disney and McDonald's
symbolize the process, along with Sony, Shell Oil and IBM. They are products known and consumed from Ulan Bator to Little Rock – and also
powerful companies that drive globalization forward, creating new laws, new business practices, new ways to eat and drink, new hopes and dreams.
Optimists look forward to a global village, linked together by the Internet, and benefiting from ever–increasing material well–being. Pessimists see a
frightful corporate tyranny destroying the environment, and sweeping away all that is healthy and meaningful to human existence. Human societies
across the globe have established progressively closer contacts over many centuries, but recently the pace has dramatically increased. Jet airplanes,
cheap telephone service, email, computers, huge oceangoing vessels, instant capital flows, all these have made the world more interdependent than
ever. Multinational corporations manufacture products in many countries and sell to consumers around the world. Money, technology and raw
materials move ever more swiftly across national borders. Along with products and finances, ideas and cultures circulate more freely. As a result, laws,
economies, and social movements are forming at the international level. Many politicians, academics, and journalists treat these trends as both
inevitable and (on the whole)

4.0Challenges to National Unity and Integration
Achieving national integration is not an easy task, but efforts must go on. This is due to the existence of economic, social, cultural, residential and
world view among the people. Therefore, the Malaysian government since the independence of the country has put endless efforts towards achieving
the national integration. In general, there are three main obstacles that the country has to face and resolve.
4.1Unified Education System the Way to Achieve National Unity
Unified schools are those offering subjects in various major languages in Malaysia and do not discourage the mastering of mother tongues. In fact
mother tongue languages should be encouraged among very young children; otherwise they would not know or lose sight of their real racial identity.
Racial polarisation in the country was getting worse compared to the yesteryears. This could be observed in various campuses where one could see
students of the same race clustering together. What was needed now was a new social contract such as a unified education system. Reasoned that most
parents nowadays sent their children to particular schools of

American War And The Vietnam War Essay
In the era between the Second World War and the Vietnam War, national unity in the United States and American patriotism began to disintegrate and
morph as the nation progressed from the 1940s through the 1970s. During WWII, the United States military fought a foe that the American public, and
the world alike, saw as an enemy to the human race, which caused Americans to unify in their efforts to fight in the battle. In contrast, US military
actions in Vietnam were not fully backed by the American public or American allies, in which caused many people from the country to lose trust and
faith in America. Wars have points that define them. In WWII, it was the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, which rallied a nation to come
together and fight, citizens and soldiers alike. Where as, Vietnam it was the Gulf of Tonkin with North Vietnam, which left many Americans, and
soldiers both, confused by the confrontation and unsure of what actions should be taken by their government. Both attacks prompted American officials
to make decisions concerning the use of military force, but in each case the attacks appealed differently to American leaders and the American public.
In the time period between the two wars the United States military had desegregated its forces. For the first time, African American and white soldiers
fought on the front lines together and slept in the same barracks and this caused many African American soldiers to think about the Army differently.

Territorial Expansion Unity

  • 1. Territorial Expansion Unity Territorial expansion played a major part in national unity socially, economically and politically. As more settlers and immigrants came to America, the need for more land grew, forcing people westward. People of many different backgrounds migrated and settled among each other, creating new and diverse communities. As new land was discovered, the government would decide which states would become slave states and which states would become free state, thus creating political differences between the citizens. Economically, it made sense to move westward to where there was more land for farming and helped create the cotton industry towards the 1850's. Socially, as people migrated to new territories, they began to meet new people and learn about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Keny A National Leader Of National Unity Chapter Two The Kenyan Cases in Perspective 2.1 Background and context The 2007 general elections in Kenya was a watershed event in the history of the country. Unprecedented violence broke out in many parts of the country immediately Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity (PNU) was declared the winner of the presidential poll and sworn in on 30th December 2007. The violence escalated as the leader of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Raila Odinga, immediately rejected the outcome of the poll. Such violence had never occurred in Kenya before and it had devastating consequences. The violence, commonly referred to as Post–Election Violence (PEV), continued for the next 14 days after Kibaki was declared the winner and according to the Commission of Inquiry into Post–Election Violence report (CIPEV or WAKI report), it led to 1,133 deaths, rape of approximately 3,000 women, severe injuries to 3,561 persons, massive destruction of both government and private property and displacement of over 300,000 people. Kenya had not experienced violence of such gravity before as previous ethnic clashes documented by the Akiwumi Commission which was commissioned in 1998 and the report released in 2002. Although declaration of Kibaki as the duly elected president is what sparked the violence, Waki report and other agencies examined deep–seated issues which played a central role in causing the violence and these include; first is the culture of impunity in the country and politicization of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

They are prejudice, communalism and ethnocentrism. a) Prejudice Do you know what prejudice is? It refers to the attitude towards others based on evidences which is not concrete and might be wrong. In Malaysia context, this kind of pre–judgmental attitude still exists among races even though much positive information is provided. b) Racism Communalism refers to the attitude of favouring one's own ethnic group. This kind of feeling is also prevalent in Malaysia. For example, the political parties that exist in Malaysia are still on ethnic base. UMNO represents the Malays, MCA and Gerakan represent the Chinese, MIC represents the Indians and many others. Each political party will fight for the interests of its ethnic. It happens in the country where there are some companies refuse to hire those who cannot speak certain language that belongs to one ethnic group.
  • 4. c) Ethnocentrism It is a belief that one's own culture is superior to that of others. Due to this feeling, any element from another culture that is different with one's own culture, is considered wrong, bad or even dangerous. Just like the feeling that people of Israel think about themselves that is they are the chosen people of Allah SWT. 2. • 5. Should John F Kennedy Encourage Unity As A Nation The quoted source is selected from an address by past U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and it is first and foremost a plea for national unity. It implores Americans to look not to their own needs, but to the needs of the country, and in doing so choose to serve selflessly instead of selfishly. Given the tension of the cold war that at the time gripped the country, is it understandable that Kennedy should choose to encourage unity as a nation, and because of its underlying purpose to motivate against a rival nation–state, it is undoubtable that this quote comes from a nationalist perspective. The perspective behind the quote is that the United States must triumph over countries that threaten its position as a democratic world power. All that Get more content on HelpWriting.net

People throughout the nation were supporting the military, and American flags were flying everywhere. America was united as one, and we all felt that the people who attacked us had hurt all of us directly. We were determined that whoever had done this to was going to pay for it. • 12. National Unity And Its Effect On The Nation In one way or another most people want to feel as though they belong somewhere, and feel secure and safe. This can be found in a variety of ways. History teaches us that a country that has a foundation of national unity is important and will be able to thrive in the best ways possible to reach its potential. Unity is when people join and work together toward a common goal, and is often considered necessary for survival. A previous president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln , stated "A house divided cannot stand" (2). National unity is beneficial in so many ways, and will lead the nation toward progress and posterity. Unity provides a sense of security and the feeling of safety. It provides an environment of peace and love. Unity strengthens the nation, as well as individuals. It leads toward a bigger effort into fighting corruption and providing a better place for all. Unity encourages a sense of pride in oneself and their country, and provides opportunities for excellence in many ways. New Zealand consists of many different types of people, cultures, religions and interests. It is so diverse, and continues to grow in diversity. Each individual has their own identity. However, being born and raised in New Zealand, something that puts aside all those differences, unifying the nation is New Zealand 's' national love affair of rugby. In government with all different religions on the leaders table, many arguments will come to, as with different religions come different values. For example, the Muslims would more than likely suggest that having more than one wife is not considered bigamy and would make it law that one could have more than one. The Christians would go against that, as they believe that only one wife is godly, and it would be extremely hard for a compromise to be made. As a single religion would be ideal for an amalgamation of countries to cooperate, and it would be impossible to convert everyone to any one religion, then religion is one big obstacle in the way of national unity. Another issue, which is present, is the fact that in the different countries, different languages and dialects of languages are spoken. A language barrier is a serious impediment to the success of national unity. If proper communication cannot go on, then proper conclusions cannot be made, and any progress politically is extremely slow. Also, the people will not feel a sense of Caribbean unity, if they cannot understand or relate to their other Caribbean residents. Lots of segregation of language will occur if national unity was achieved, and that would deceive the whole idea of unity. • 15. Reflection About Unity How I learned the Importance of Unity Every time I go on social media, I notice that the country I live in is slowly becoming more and more divided. In a country where innocent Black lives are taken by those who promised them living rights, where Muslims are labeled as terrorists, where undocumented immigrants are threatened to be deported, where innocent lives are suffering, it is difficult to find the light in darkness. America is a land filled with an abundance amount of diversity with people from different races, cultures, countries, languages and religions. The only ingredient that is missing to help society tackle these challenging times filled with hatred and ignorance, is unity. Unity is the state of being united or joined as a whole. I would never hear about issues that our country was facing such as discrimination and racism. I was living in my own happy bubble and not stepping outside of it to face the truth. However, when I entered high school, reality hit me smack on the face. My dark skin color was suddenly pushed into darkness while others were easily able to shine. For starters, King destroyed the national unity, which had only been recently recuperated after the division between the French and English Canadians during World War 1 as a result of the first conscription. Primitively, King's plan was not to force conscription, as his campaign slogan was "Conscription if necessary but not necessarily," as well as he also ruled out overseas conscription entirely in 1939 as a promise to the citizens of Canada . King was aware of the strong/negative francophone feelings towards conscription and knew much of his support in the election as a result of his repeated pledges about conscription came from the French– Canadians. Pessimists see a frightful corporate tyranny destroying the environment, and sweeping away all that is healthy and meaningful to human existence. • 22. American War And The Vietnam War Essay In the era between the Second World War and the Vietnam War, national unity in the United States and American patriotism began to disintegrate and morph as the nation progressed from the 1940s through the 1970s. During WWII, the United States military fought a foe that the American public, and the world alike, saw as an enemy to the human race, which caused Americans to unify in their efforts to fight in the battle. In contrast, US military actions in Vietnam were not fully backed by the American public or American allies, in which caused many people from the country to lose trust and faith in America. Wars have points that define them. In WWII, it was the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, which rallied a nation to come together and fight, citizens and soldiers alike. Where as, Vietnam it was the Gulf of Tonkin with North Vietnam, which left many Americans, and soldiers both, confused by the confrontation and unsure of what actions should be taken by their government. Both attacks prompted American officials to make decisions concerning the use of military force, but in each case the attacks appealed differently to American leaders and the American public. In the time period between the two wars the United States military had desegregated its forces. For the first time, African American and white soldiers fought on the front lines together and slept in the same barracks and this caused many African American soldiers to think about the Army differently.
