The Dotco Right-Angle Grinder Debris Disc
Debris flies away from the rotating pad, tangent to the point of contact with the part.
This means that where the pad touches the part, the direction it is moving against the
surface determines which way most of the debris will fly. Four example directions are
illustrated on the next slide, but in reality, debris can fly anywhere within a disc-shaped
region parallel to the pad, depending on what area of the pad is contacting the part.
Roll Forward or Lift Handle:
• Front Edge of Pad Touching Part
• Debris Flying to Right
• Dotco pulls left
Roll Left or Rotate Handle
Counterclockwise:
• Left Edge of Pad Touching Part
• Debris Flying Forward
• Dotco pulls nearer
Roll to Rear or Lower the Handle:
• Rear (Near) Edge of Pad Touching Part
• Debris Flying to Left
• Dotco pulls right
Roll Right or Rotate Handle
Clockwise:
• Right Edge of Pad Touching Part
• Debris Flying toward Operator
• Dotco pulls away
AS YOU LOOK DOWN ON
THE DOTCO FROM ABOVE,
THE PAD ROTATES
CLOCKWISE.
THE DEBRIS DIRECTIONS
SHOWN INDICATE THE
STRONGEST DIRECTION,
BUT A SMALLER AMOUNT
STILL FLIES OFF IN ALL
DIRECTIONS WITHIN THE
DEBRIS DISC.
AS LONG AS YOU ARE
LOOKING DOWN ON
THE TOP SURFACE OF
THE PAD, YOUR HEAD
IS NOT IN THE
DEBRIS DISC.
WHEN YOU SEE THE EDGE OF THE PAD, YOU ARE IN
THE DEBRIS DISC – AN UNSAFE CONDITION BECAUSE
THE DEBRIS MAY HIT YOU IN THE FACE. IN THIS
PICTURE, THE DEBRIS IS FLYING RIGHT AT YOUR EYES!
ALWAYS THINK ABOUT WHERE
OTHER PEOPLE ARE! AVOID PUTTING
THEM IN THE DEBRIS DISC JUST
AS CAREFULLY AS YOURSELF.
THE DEBRIS DISC GETS
THICKER THE FARTHER YOU
ARE FROM THE DOTCO.
AN EXAMPLE SITUATION IN
WHICH THE OPERATOR’S HEAD
IS IN THE DEBRIS DISC… AND
DEBRIS IS SHOWN FLYING AT
THE OPERATOR’S FACE!
• Always visualize your Debris Disc and keep it from intersecting
yourself or others
• Bear in mind that debris can bounce off of surfaces and fly to
unexpected places
• Debris can fly upward, and then fall back down
• Debris is electrically conductive (Aluminum) so it should not be
allowed to enter electrical equipment or outlets
• The Dotco will try to travel in the direction opposite from debris flight,
because of the pad pushing on the part
• Use a firm grip, and familiarize yourself with the Dotco’s behavior
• Always wear the right PPE for deburring
