To Whom It May Concern:
I write this letter in enthusiastic support of Patrick Luu, whom I hired as the
Marketing & Communications Intern at the University of California Riverside’s
School of Public Policy (SPP) for the Spring 2015 quarter.
Throughout his internship, Patrick greatly impressed me (in my capacity overseeing
marketing and communications at the SPP) with his diligence, work ethic, and
genuine motivation for expanding his knowledge of marketing.
His biggest undertaking was producing a social media strategy for the SPP. This was
a huge task for a startup organization like ours, and he gamely stepped up to the
undertaking. Through his research of competitor schools, latest trends, and best
practices, as well as through conducting focus groups, he produced a comprehensive
social media plan for the SPP. He presented his proposal at a meeting of brand
ambassadors, laying out roles for the entire communications team, which would
include future marketing interns. This strategic plan serves as the groundwork for our
future social media efforts, and we are grateful for his hard work. In addition to
Patrick’s work on the social media plan, he extended the SPP’s social media reach by
assisting in increasing our followers on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn by 100% by
the end of his internship.
Outside of social media, Patrick also performed various research on digital advertising
and search engine optimization as building blocks for our marketing plan for the next
school year; provided graphic design support via Adobe InDesign (such as the
production of event flyers); provided photography coverage for events and digital
image manipulation via Adobe Photoshop; and assisted with designing and ordering
SPP-branded items. The office staff (which includes a student recruiter, fundraising
director, and research center analysts) highly regarded Patrick because he performed
all the above tasks with great customer service orientation.
Finally, working in the SPP’s fast-paced environment where new projects
unexpectedly would be pushed to the top of the priority list on short notice, Patrick
consistently displayed an ability to adapt and be flexible to new experiences. I have

seen the challenges of the internship transform him by bolstering his confidence and
increasing his maturity, and I believe he is now ready for the next step in his career.
I am confident that because of his proven track record as a self-motivated intern who
has consistently delivered excellent work, Patrick would produce work of the highest
quality at any future workplace. Patrick is an exceptionally talented young man, and
one of the hardest workers around. I give him my most enthusiastic recommendation.
