2. USES OF COMPUTERS IN
EDUCATION
A computer is a programmable electronic device designed to accept
data, perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high
speed, display the results of these operations.
3. Computers are used for presentation by both
facilitators and learners
Learners and facilitators use computer applications like Microsoft
PowerPoint to prepare presentations and present them during
lectures, research/project presentations, conferences and workshops.
This is achieved with the additional use of projectors and/smartboards.
4. Computers are used for preparing and editing
documents
• Lectures, students, education officers, secretaries, principals etc use
Word processors like Microsoft to prepare and edit documents on
daily basis.
5. Computers are used as a means of
communication
• Through the internet and other networks, lectures, education officers,
principals, students are able to communicate using means like; social
media, video conferencing, email, voice over Internet protocol, Blogs
and Online phone calls.
6. Computers are used in research
• Lectures, learners, researchers use computers in several various ways
during their researches. The internet enable researchers to access
and gather lot of information, through searching using search like
Google.com.
7. Computers are used to store educational
documents and information
• Computers have vast amounts of storage spaces to store millions of
documents and files. Students use internal and external hardrives,
USB flashes drives, Optical drives etc to store their documents for
future.
8. Computers, through the internet, are used to
buy books and other educational materials
• Online stores like amazon.com sells various e-books, educational
software, computers and hardware devices. Buyers visit a selling
website, search for item of interest, then order it. Online payment is
then made using VISA, MasterCard, Paypall etc.
9. Computers are used in classrooms to
demonstrate and facilitate teaching
• A teacher can bring a computer and projector into a classroom, and
use it to demonstrate any experiment.
10. Computers are used to manipulate student
marks and their information
• Using enterprises/customized software and/or spreadsheets like
Microsoft Excel, colleges and universities are able to store, retrieve,
analysis and update student personal and academic information.
Programmers develop customized student information systems that
are able to admits student, asses and give them feedback. The
systems are able to decide which courses students passed, failed,
have to supplement etc.
11. Computers are used for marking
examination/assignment or test scripts
• Markers and lectures at universities/collages use computers to mark
test/assignment/examination scripts using computers and/or devices
like optical mark reader.
