2. Outline:
1. Defining Pause Procedure
2. Importance of this strategy in active learning
3. Example of subject given using pause procedure
4. Steps to implement the strategy in classroom
5. Applying this strategy to be suitable for online learning
3. Pause Procedure
Intersperse Strategy used in the class lectures to enhance student
understanding of the material.
To use pause procedure:
Arrange for 2 or 3 minutes between every 10 to 15 minutes.
During these brief breaks, encourage students to discuss or rework their notes in
pairs to clarify key points, raise questions and solve problems.
4. How this strategy is applied:
Note taking: students can use this time to summarize the information, listing
down key points or main ideas, creating a graphical representation, filling an
exit slip , etc..
Pair review: a quick discussion among the pairs will help students in recalling
facts, clarifying any misconceptions and filling in facts left out.
Framing questions: students can be instructed to frame two questions based
on the material that was presented. For example: how long was the first
world War?
Crossword: students are presented with a quick crossword puzzle that she
should solve. When called for, these puzzles can also be designed such as to
connect previous learning with the present.
6. Subject: Recycling (Science).
Grade:3
Objective: Students should learn what is recycling is all about.
o What can and can’t be recycled.
o Why it is important.
o And shall be able to determine solutions for encouraging recycling in their community.
7. Introduction:
Recycling is the action or process of converting waste into reusable material, by
taking materials ready to be thrown away and changing them to materials that we
can reuse.
Including paper, plastic ,glass and metal.
8. Let’s Pause:
Question: can you please give me examples of what can be and what cant be
recycled from our daily life.
9. Importance of recycling:
Recycling is very important as waste has a huge impact on the natural
environment.
It helps reduce pollution caused by waste.
Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases are released from rubbish in landfill
sites which helps to tackle climate change.
Saves energy.
Reduces demand for raw materials
Cheaper than waste collection and disposal
10. Here is a question to be discussed by thinking of
ways to encourage the community to recycle
12. The use of pause procedure involves a minimal amount of extra time, but can
offer significant benefits in comparison to lectures that continue without breaks.
I believe it is an effective way in involving the students, gaining their attention,
applying their understanding thus they won’t get the to wander off or daydream.
