S Jayaraman had a slipped disc (disc bulge at L4-L5 with disc desiccation) and
despite a surgery , his condition deteriorated. Surgery hadn't worked and he
felt an increased pain in his lower back. The reason could be attributed to
the fact that surgery aims to suppress or correct an existing symptom. It does
not work to reverse the underlying root cause. Weak muscles, inadequate
support, imbalances and mechanical deficiencies are the root cause in over
90% of such cases. Surgery does not solve these. While one is tempted to
stop all activities and rest, it is important not to be inactive as it often leads
to increased muscle weakness. Jayaraman visited one of the city's first
specialty spine clinics, Qi Spine. Here, spine specialists prescribed a spine
muscle function test (DSA), to better diagnose and assess his muscular
structure.

Results observed weaknesses in specific muscle groups. After six weeks of
targeted treatment, his symptoms reversed, the function restored and he is
now completely pain free. In a recently published study on such slipped disc
cases, surgery was compared with conservative treatment. The study found
that just six weeks of conservative treatment could achieve the same results
as surgery . In fact, since conservative treatment focuses on reversing the
underlying cause of symptoms, it is found to be a more sustained correction.
The European Union's latest published guidelines on the treatment of back
pain has made the same recommendations and guidelines are available at
http:www.backpaineurope.org Dr Garima Anandani, of the Qi Spine Clinic,
says, “We see over 100 such cases a month. Surgery must only be prescribed
when there is an extreme nerve involvement, which is usually found in less
than 1% of the cases. When it comes to the spine surgery should not be
prescribed as the first line of treatment.“
