The Delhi government on Wednesday put a price cap of Rs 600 on dengue tests
antibody and NS1 antigen and Rs 50 for checking platelet count, a move that had
private labs and hospitals protesting against the government. They are currently
charging anywhere between Rs 1500 and Rs 2000 for the dengue test while
checking platelet count costs about Rs 200.The test for viral infection will continue
to be free in state-run hospitals. State health minister Satyendar Jain said the
decision for private hospitals and labs has been taken following complaints that
many of them were overcharging, sensing an opportunity to make profit.
“It has also been directed that all hospitals and labs should conduct only NS1-Ag
(Elisa) and MAC Elisa test for confirmation of dengue according to the
recommendation of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. The use of
rapid diagnostic kits for dengue, deployed widely , has been discouraged because
of false positive results,“ he added. The health minister said they had consulted
several experts before deciding on the price cap. Brought to you by

Earlier, during the swine flu outbreak in February , the Delhi government had
put a price cap of Rs 4500 on the swine flu test and said labs charging a
higher amount would be blacklisted. Reacting to the government decision,
Indian Medical Association said they have called a meeting of healthcare
providers to discuss the issue.“While we agree with the intent of the
government, their decision to unilaterally put a price cap on dengue tests is
not acceptable. There is need for more clarification on the matter,“ said K K
Aggarwal, honorary general secretary of the doctors' body .
CMD of Dr Lal Laboratories, Dr Arvind Lal, said they had sent a proposal to
the gov ernment to reduce the price of dengue tests to Rs 950 in view of the
health crisis. “They have reduced it even further without consulting us. This
is unacceptable,“ he said.

Other top labs also raised questions about the government decision
but refused to say whether they will continue with the existing prices
or reduce them as desired by the state government. “We have not
received any orders. The government has not issued any notification
either. Once they do that, we will take a call,“ said a lab owner.
He said the extraction kits, primers and other reagents used by top labs
are of the highest standards and that's why their prices could not be
compared with that of smaller labs.
Though the government is offering free tests at all designated hospitals,
their limited capacity was causing delay in results which, sources said,
forced many patients to rush to private labs.
