The Dress
The Dress
The short story "The Dress", written by Julia Darling in 2006, is about two sisters and the mother. The story takes place on the mother's birthday. The
main conflict is a missing silk dress of one of two sisters, and this conflict ends up coursing great damage on the structure of the family. The main
characters are the two sisters Rachel and Flora, and their mother.
The story takes place in a wealthy district with expensive restaurants. The sisters have very different personalities; Rachel is the neat and clever one.
You can tell by the things she notices and how she describes them. For example :"... disoriented heaps of crumbled cloths..." and "Rachel wrenched the
half–closed curtain back, so that the room was suddenly filled...show more content...
She is unable to solve the issue, and therefore she turns to one of the things she knows how to do: hand out tissues. This indicates that she has a hard
time distancing herself from her job. The mother needs to relax when she comes home from work, but instead she ends up consulting at home. But
instead of trying to solve the problem she starts feeling sorry for herself and starts craving attention. She wants her daughters to overcome their
disagreements, for her sake. "She wanted the daughters to make an effort."
The relationship between Rachel and Flora is characterized by an endless stream of disagreements, quarrels and jealousy. Flora wants the mothers'
attention since she feels inferior to Rachel. As mentioned before, Rachel is also the tidy one, and Flora certainly isn't. they are like two opposite
human beings, like rubber and glue.
The symbols in this text describe the mood and atmosphere in the story. A very strong symbol in the story is when Rachel is wearing the black dress
and the red ear–rings. This underlines the feeling of hate towards Flora for stealing the dress, as black is the colour that symbolizes hate and/or death,
and red symbolizes a strong temper such as anger.
The theme in the story is jealousy and rivalry between siblings. The constant seeking of attention, especially when you have a divorced career–mother,
plays a big part in the

Persuasive Speech On Clothes
Did you know that the average American throws away more than 65 pounds of clothing each year or that over 85% of clothing in the United States
end up in landfills instead of being recycled or that it takes over 1,000 gallons of water used to manufacture a single pair of jeans?
So let's say that you did know those unfortunate facts and you've set out on an epic closet sweep (and the kids' closet) and have bags of clothes taking
up space on your bedroom floor. Now, where to donate?
The most easy and convenient option for many is to drop off your unwanted clothes at one of those dumpster–like donation bins that are found in
random grocery store parking lots. However, there are other special places you can recycle those pieces you've grown tired...show more content...

Dress Code Preamble
Preamble: When in the course of life events it becomes necessary for students to protest against dress code. Students should have the right to wear any
type of attire they desire to because it is a form of expressing their individuality.
The Declaration: We hold these principles to be self–evident, the dress code is sending an inaccurate message for the reason that it seems to be
considered as if it is only applied towards girls, which is miscalculated because boys can wear clothes that remain part of the dress code.
List of grievances: Until now, students have subjected to the inequality by the department. Some of the discrimination and mistreatment are:
The juveniles harass the ladies on how they dress, rather than the boys receiving

Assignment 12
"The Dress" by Julia Darling is a short story about jealousy and the troubles of single mothers with careers. It tells about the relationship between the
two sisters, Rachel and Flora. It is a tense relationship, which finally breaks on their mother 's fortieth birthday when Flora has stolen and ruined
Rachel 's dress. Rachel, unable to handle her sister anymore, goes to live with their father instead. Some time after the mother kicks Flora out of the
house. The mother in the story is a forty–year–old bereavement counsellor. She lives alone with her two daughters. We know that she is divorced,
because the girls ' father does not live with them but is not dead either. When Rachel and Flora start fighting, the mother is...show more content...
It gives us a better impression of the characters and also explains their behaviour better than if for example the entire story had been told only from
Rachel 's point of view. In the story jealousy is a main theme. We see it when Flora tries to be like her sister to gain their mother 's attention. Another
theme is the troubles of being a single mother with a career. The mother is unable to distance herself from her job and her private life, when trying to
be a mother and solve the conflict between her daughters, because what she really wants is just to relax and have a nice time, but since she is the only
parent, she is the one with the responsibility of helping them. In conclusion "The Dress" shows what can happen when an unstable relationship
between two siblings breaks and the parent is unable to fix it. It describes the consequences of putting your job before your family, as the mother does in
this case, and of letting something destructive like jealousy evolve into something so big that there is nothing to do and it eventually

Dress for Success
Dress for Success
As much as we all wish to deny it, the way we dress has a big impact on our success in life. One way to acknowledge this idea is through the use of
school uniforms. Over time, schools have become aware of the importance of uniforms:
In 2007–08, about 18 percent of public school principals reported that their school required students to wear uniforms. In 1999–2000, the percentage of
principals who reported that their school required students to wear uniforms was 12 percent ("Fast Facts.")
Regardless of whether the school is private or public, the use of school uniforms should be executed as a way to promote an environment that helps
students get the most out of their school education.
More than a form of dress code,...show more content...
What they wear can certainly make them look unique but should not be what defines them. Instead, we should teach and encourage our children and
students to show their individuality in ways that really matter – their performance in school, on the athletic field, serving their church or their
community, in a math or science competition, by writing a poem or short story, on stage or in the theater. This is what truly makes them an individual
(Hager).
We must realize that there is more to 'individuality' than just materialistic items such as clothes.
School uniforms help maintain a sense of equality amongst the students. They help rid any socioeconomic barriers that may be causing certain
students, or groups of students, to be alienated from the rest of the student body (Wilde). In other words, the financial status of a student's parents no
longer matters. Parents "are no longer pressured to buy the latest fashions, and they spend less on their children's clothing" (Isaacson). They no longer
feel obligated to keep their children up to date with the latest fashion trends. Due to this, students are less prone to form cliques, which only lead to the
alienation of students ("School Uniforms.") At the same time, students no longer feel inferior or superior to other students. No longer do students
respect each other on the basis of how stylish they look. Their clothes do not gauge how popular they are in the school. Instead, uniforms force people
to look at each

Dress Code Autoethnography
Autoethnography
By examining some of my personal stories about being reproved for dress code violations from elementary to high school, the purpose of this
autoethnography is to examine how various commonplace public school dress code policies affect young women and their relationships with their
bodies. Public dress code policies are often gender–normative and discriminatory to girls because their bodies are being sexualized and critically
assessed. While it is often a challenge to evoke certain memories faultlessly, the stories that I did remember helped to better apprehend my experience
while I was researching the gender politics of institutional dress codes.
Because this is an experience that I have lived through several times in several different schools, I elected to write an autoethnography as opposed
to an ethnography. Autoethnography as a research methodology is a valuable implement because it allows us to reflect on how our lived, embodied
experiences are part of larger issues such as sexism in dress codes. I can use my personal memories, however accurate they may be, as a valuable
resource to supplement my analysis of sexism in dress code policies. Through critical analysis, I seek to connect my personal experiences of getting in
trouble for dress code violations to a broader cultural context.
When I was in public school as a child, I was a bit of an early bloomer; I was quick to mature into my body.
At times this brought me unsolicited attention, even by adults

Dress For Success In School
Dress for Success in School
How many public schools today have school uniform policy? According to Hamilton, there are 23% of public elementary schools that have the school
uniform policy (11). There are many public schools today making uniforms a rule to help the learning environment. During the past 20 years, the ranks
of uniformed public school students in the US have swelled to 12.5 million more than 20% of the total ("Too School" 2). Many students will stop
worry about everything else that is going on within the school if they make uniforms a policy. Mabry states students that attend public schools, that
require uniforms, might spend less time deciding what to wear each day (1). If each student has a uniform to wear then they will not...show more

Each color has different description and can lead to different effect. (Self–Growth) The best compliment that somebody can make to another person is
to say, "You look fantastic". It means that the job that somebody did with his outfit is successful, and he succeed in impressing others. This compliment
about the overall outfit, is even better than hearing about a specific part of the outfit, for example, the shoes, or a bag, or a coat... This compliment
means that the person's attire was successfully combined, with his self– confidence making the person look fantastic. It's especially important when
making a first impression. Because when first meeting someone a good impression will be made. In a person's life there's a very important and
significant step, which may influence their whole life, this step is to find a good job. It means that people should be
Gusak3 responsible about finding work because nobody wants to lose out on a chance, so a person has to be very concerned about it. It's when
first impressions are made as well. According to CNN's reports about what employers demand from people who went to the job interview, we can
see that how we dress says a lot about us, and it forms an employer's opinion and decides our future in the company (CNN.com/living). A company
may not have a particular dress code, but they would like to see people working in appropriate and suitable clothes; the employers want to see a person

Dress For Success Meaning
The phrase "Dress for Success" is used throughout the lives of many people in different ways. This expression can guide people through various
situations and has different meanings according to the person comprehending it. For me the expression can mean two different things depending on the
circumstance. It can either mean having a certain state of mind when trying to accomplish something or acting a certain way that you want your peers
to perceive you.
When thinking of the phrase "Dress for Success" the first definition that I come up with is having a certain state of mind when you are trying to
accomplish something. You have to act and think a certain way when dealing with different tasks, for example when you are at a jobinterview it

In the story jealousy is a main theme. We see it when Flora tries to be like her sister to gain their mother 's attention. Another theme is the troubles of being a single mother with a career. • 8. Dress for Success Dress for Success As much as we all wish to deny it, the way we dress has a big impact on our success in life. One way to acknowledge this idea is through the use of school uniforms. Over time, schools have become aware of the importance of uniforms: In 2007–08, about 18 percent of public school principals reported that their school required students to wear uniforms. In 1999–2000, the percentage of principals who reported that their school required students to wear uniforms was 12 percent ("Fast Facts.") Regardless of whether the school is private or public, the use of school uniforms should be executed as a way to promote an environment that helps students get the most out of their school education. More than a form of dress code,...show more content... What they wear can certainly make them look unique but should not be what defines them. Instead, we should teach and encourage our children and students to show their individuality in ways that really matter – their performance in school, on the athletic field, serving their church or their community, in a math or science competition, by writing a poem or short story, on stage or in the theater. This is what truly makes them an individual (Hager). We must realize that there is more to 'individuality' than just materialistic items such as clothes. School uniforms help maintain a sense of equality amongst the students. They help rid any socioeconomic barriers that may be causing certain students, or groups of students, to be alienated from the rest of the student body (Wilde). In other words, the financial status of a student's parents no longer matters. Parents "are no longer pressured to buy the latest fashions, and they spend less on their children's clothing" (Isaacson). They no longer feel obligated to keep their children up to date with the latest fashion trends. Due to this, students are less prone to form cliques, which only lead to the alienation of students ("School Uniforms.") At the same time, students no longer feel inferior or superior to other students. No longer do students respect each other on the basis of how stylish they look. Their clothes do not gauge how popular they are in the school. Instead, uniforms force people to look at each Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Dress Code Autoethnography Autoethnography By examining some of my personal stories about being reproved for dress code violations from elementary to high school, the purpose of this autoethnography is to examine how various commonplace public school dress code policies affect young women and their relationships with their bodies. Public dress code policies are often gender–normative and discriminatory to girls because their bodies are being sexualized and critically assessed. While it is often a challenge to evoke certain memories faultlessly, the stories that I did remember helped to better apprehend my experience while I was researching the gender politics of institutional dress codes. Because this is an experience that I have lived through several times in several different schools, I elected to write an autoethnography as opposed to an ethnography. Autoethnography as a research methodology is a valuable implement because it allows us to reflect on how our lived, embodied experiences are part of larger issues such as sexism in dress codes. I can use my personal memories, however accurate they may be, as a valuable resource to supplement my analysis of sexism in dress code policies. Through critical analysis, I seek to connect my personal experiences of getting in trouble for dress code violations to a broader cultural context. When I was in public school as a child, I was a bit of an early bloomer; I was quick to mature into my body. At times this brought me unsolicited attention, even by adults Get more content on HelpWriting.net
