Cross Cultural Conflict
'The more people fail to communicate to each other, the more they develop personal assumptions that could lead to conflict.' (aipc.com, 16/02/14)
There are many issues which may arise in regard to cross–cultural conflict, from both sides of the interaction. It is acknowledged, for instance, that this
writer, like everyone else, has his own preconceptions that will influence how he processes data and behave, and which are primarily due to the
'accident' of his cultural up–bringing. These 'prejudices' may influence the way he works with others, especially if they go unrecognised by him.
Fortunately, there are known and effective ways to resolve conflict which take cultural considerations into account. Also, such conflict can be reported

A person's age is a factor that may affect their willingness to believe that you are of the appropriate gender or age to perform this counselling service.
Acceptance – not just 'acknowledging' – of the other's culture, and adjusting one's behaviour as a result, displays one's embracing of that culture as valid.
. When attempting to resolve conflict, a calm demeanour instead of allowing avoidance of the issue to occur is important. ( Weiten, 2009).Assessment
of the situation is necessary to determine the reason for the conflict, which task is aided by asking oneself such questions as; 'what are my
expectations in the situation?, my assumptions about what is 'right' or 'wrong' in this situation?, my needs in this situation?, and am I overly
emotional? If so, what can I do to calm down? (Open Colleges, 2011, p. 52).
Although keeping calm is important, and the honest consideration of one's own possible contributions to the unhelpful tension, further more specific
strategies may be necessary.
These may include; using 'active listening' to assist in identifying the problem and the other person's understandings of their needs; responding
respectfully to the other person and their cultural attitudes and behaviours, – even if you don't privately agree with them; being aware of one's

Introduction
Cross–Cultural engagement is a process of learning to interact and communicate effectively with individuals in another culture. Engagement implies a
dynamic, two–way process of communicating with individuals in the host culture, rather than simply learning about them from a distance. It also
suggests active learning while crossing into another culture. Why is cross–cultural engagement important in a mission? In the Bible we see the twelve
disciplines go on mission to spread the Gospel. Jesus sent them on mission in groups with instructions. We, in today's era also need set of instructions
or need to know how to go on missions in other than our culture. It is a difficult and humungous task to carry out. One need to first know what their
mission is and how to pursue their calling. My most favorite learning from this class is the work of Holy Spirit in a mission. Sunquist writes and
explains about it very beautifully. He says, 'Christian mission is not a project or a function of the local church.' It is very important, in the first
place, not to make false assumptions about a mission. Firstly, we need to clear our heads, realize and confess in our hearts that we are working for
God's mission, not for a church or any organization. Secondly, we should discern and ask for help from the Holy Spirit to help and guide us through
the mission that Holy Spirit has chosen for us. Cross–cultural engagement is led by the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 'And they were all filled with

A Reflection On Cross Cultural Management
Having been Australia for almost two years, I am provided opportunities to fully feel the multicultural atmosphere. In this reflection essay, I would like
to share some experiences about cross–cultural collision and the effect of these in my life. This essay also includes what I learned through these
experiences and what new insights I came up with to guide my life based on theories of IBUS6002 (Cross–cultural Management).
The first experience happened in my daily life. Sylva who is a native Australia is my first landlady in Sydney. She has two daughters (Lily and
Lucy) and a son (Shine). One weekend, I bought many fruits from the supermarket. The phone rang when I was washing them. I was in a hurry to
answer the phone and forgot to turn off the tap. All of a sudden, Lucy shouted "Don't waste water" and "Turn off the tap". Sylva, Lily and Shine all
look to me, I feel a little ashamed of myself and my face became red. Since then, I experienced something similar again and I felt more and more
uncomfortable and inadaptation. In the end, I moved from Sylva's home to a Chinese landlord's home though her family is very friendly to me.
Kim, Pan and Park (1998) state that people who are in high context cultures prefer to communicate by the physical form rather than use verbal pattern
to convey information, especially directly through language. Obviously, Lucy got used to the low context communication mode because Australia
belongs to the low context culture. Thus, the expression

I was lucky enough to be raised in a family that strongly felt its Irish and Celtic heritage should be celebrated. From them, I learned the beauty of my
own culture, and an appreciation to learn the cultures of others. I brought that appreciation with me through life, and found it to make all the difference.
My earliest cross–cultural experience that I can remember with clarity was the Spanish exchange student who was hosted by one of my aunts. Mai not
only taught me about her culture, which in turn piqued an interest in the Spanish/Latino culture that continues to this day, but she also helped me to
appreciate many small, seemingly insignificant aspects of my own culture.

With these experiences with foreigners in my own territory under my belt, I was then lucky enough to have the experience reversed. I went on an
ecological/tourist trip to Costa Rica, and my time there opened a wealth of new understanding on culture. Immersed in a language and a location
completely foreign from my own, I began to see that those were not the only, nor even the most important, aspects of culture. There was a general
ambience and mood that was completely different that what I was used to– the "tico ambiente" as the Costa Ricans would say. Everything that I learned
there greatly interested me, from their views on the environment to machismo. In fact, this experience was the foundation for my choice of majors and
for my continued interested in the field of sustainable development in Costa Rica.
One of my final and most extensive cross–cultural experiences was this past summer. I was fortunate enough to study abroad for a month in
Guatemala, and to live with a family during my stay. The pleasure and knowledge that I gained from this trip is immeasurable. Not only did it further
cement my commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection– what person couldn't feel obligated to protect the beauty I saw–
but it also gave me a deeper understanding of what it is like to truly be involved in a foreign culture. It was amazing to be able to converse with people

Cross Cultural Reflection Paper
Reflection Paper
After reading and doing the Cross Cultural Adaptability Inventory I have realized that there are many factors, which are effective for managing
people in different cultures. This world is very diverse and it can be hard to keep up with everything that is going on in everyone's culture. Diversity is
an attribute to a specific individual that shows that he or she is different from another individual. Managing diversity in the work place is important
because it can benefit the workplace in many ways. Some examples are it can improve relationships with co–workers and clients, recruitment of new
employees and just the overall attitude in the office.
I think a lot of stereotyping goes on into today's world and that's why the world is in a bad place right now. If the world wasn't so judgmental I
think it would be a peaceful place. We can all reduce the stereotyping by just simply try to reduce being prejudice and realizing that you are wrong.
Don't judge other people and treat others how you want to be treated. I believe if we do these things managing people would be a lot easier. Often
there is a lot of miscommunication in the workplace just do due lack of listening. Doing simple things everyday can do minimizing miscommunication
in the work place. Practice simple communications skills, ask questions, listen, avoid conflicts with other workers and don't judge other people.
Meeting new friends or talking to new people everyday is important because we interact with different people everyday. We should seek more
opportunities to interact with different races and cultures, form healthy relationships with different cultures, be open to yourself and other people, trust
other people and trust yourself. If we follow those things in the workplace I believe that we will build relationships and have a healthy work
environment. There are five cross–cultural differences that I think are important to understand. The first one is power distance, which knows that there
is unequal power distribution. The second one is Individualism versus collectivism, which means how loosely or tightly the society seems and how
people choose to act as individuals and not members of groups. The third one is

Cross Cultural Perspectives Of Culture Essay
Cross–Cultural Perspectives–900 words
Culture refers to the values, rules, norms and behaviour as well as their products that govern the lifestyles of an individual or group. Cultural rules and
behaviour are inherited from past generations, may be learned from others and are transmitted to other generation. Additionally, they embody the
symbols and systems through which communication, attitudes and knowledge about life takes place. The set a certain group of people apart from
others because the manifestation of cultural components represent the conscious elements of the individuals in one culture and helps register the
differences or similarities in how other groups and cultures behave.
Culture influences all aspects of an individual's life including food and dietary habits, dressing, communication with others and the relationship with
other members of the community among others. One of the most critical aspects of culture in business is communication. Cross–cultural communication
is one of the perspectives of cross–cultural lifestyles. It refers to communication that takes place from a person in a particular culture to another person
in a different culture (). In a globalised world, cross–effective cultural communication is a growing concern among enterprises that operate in different
cultures, multinational corporations and those employing staff from different cultures. Cross–cultural communication must take place within a
conscious context, where the sender of the

Cultural background and previous intercultural experience
Moving away from the country where you grew up is easy for some people, but for me, it was a challenge. I left Russia at the age of 14 to study in
an English boarding school and spent three years there, then moved to Spain for three years to study at the IE University, now I came to America for
my exchange semester and will return to Spain to finish my bachelor. All three of these countries are completely different to what I was used to and
felt comfortable with. I never analysed why I felt so strange and never had many friends there. I just thought that people surrounding me were not 'my
kind of people' they were just odd – I did not understand them and they did not understand me and, therefore, we never could bond. I have not spent
enough time in the US so far to be able to reflect on it so I will focus on England and Spain compared to my Russian background.
Not long ago my sister recommended me to read Richard Steers' book "Management across Cultures: Challenges and Strategies". It was a great book
with many interesting insights but one particular chapter called "Culture, Values, and Worldviews" opened my eyes a little bit and helped me to
understand why exactly I have never fully fit into any of the new countries I lived in. I understood that the problem was not in me but it is more of a
cultural thing. According to Steers, there are five core cultural dimensions that all countries and their cultures can be analysed by – how the power and
authority are distributed among the society, whether people are more individualistic or collectivistic, how they perceive the environment, their time and
work patterns and the way societies try to reduce uncertainties.
I come from an East European cluster with assumptions that we have hierarchical power distribution – the power belong to those on top of the
hierarchy and there is an inequality within the society; we are collectivistic meaning that people tend to work towards the outcome that will benefit
everyone in the group – not just one person; we are supposed to have a mastery–oriented perception of nature – trying to change it and take advantage
of it; we have

Culture:
There are many perceptions about culture, different people give different views. Traditionally culture has been defined as the set of rules, guidelines,
laws, symbols practiced across different contexts in the minds of the people. Culture can today be defined as human made part of
environment(Herkovits,1955).The subjective view includes the multidimensional array of shared beliefs , norms , values of a particular
group(Thomas,1994). Humans are seen as producers of culture and are being influenced by it (Segall, Desan, Berry,& Poortinga, 1999). Culture is
defined by criteria, place, time and language(Georgas &Berry,1995)...show more content...
Through the research, it helps to understand the cultural variation of the human development, behaviour and so on which develops psychology. Cross
Cultural Psychology is different from cultural psychology which believes that human behaviour is governed by cultural differences whereas the cross
cultural psychology includes the universality in behavioural and mental processes. So, it is a research methodology instead of being a field of
psychology.
Cross Cultural Psychology is the explicit, systematic comparison of psychological variables under different cultural conditions in order to specify the
antecedents and processes that mediate the emergence of the behaviour differences.
It is the empirical study of the members of various culture groups who have had different experiences that lead to predictable and significant
differences in behaviour.

I live in Spokane Washington and had a little trouble finding a true cultural experience, there seems to be more opportunities for them in the summer
months vs winter. I decided that I would like to try an ethnic restaurant for two reasons; 1) Date night with my husband, 2) get out of cooking dinner.
Again, Spokane is not inundated with ethnic restaurants and there is only a handful, and some had bad reviews and the food looked downright scary. I
ended up choosing Top of India which serves authentic Indian food, curry and all. I am not a very adventurous person when it comes to food and
spiciness so I have never tried Indian food, the mentioned of curry has me turning up my nose. Maybe, in part to the horror stories...show more content...
I would definitely feel what Hansen refers to a cultural "bump" a slight uneasiness in the unfamiliar if I were to visit India (Lynch, 2011). Indian
culture is deeply spiritual, but it is also complex made up of mystic, mythology and superstitions. (ISHA, 2014). Unlike, the American culture,
which if religious, is mostly comprised of Monotheistic religions (one god). Another, vastly different practice is the Caste system in India, which
you're socioeconomic and social status are determined by your birthright. Meaning, that you can never climb the social class ladder, your future
and success are predetermined. So different from the US, where here you personally in charge of your future success and could be born into a low
socio economic family and still rise above your circumstances through hard work and education. Money, is America's social class system regulator,
and the more you have, the more your status, power and influence increases. Here, is another unusual fact I learned from a previous anthropology
class, India is the only culture to recognize a 3rd gender possibility, which are called Hijras (Nanda, 1999). While, they are not always socially
accepted, they are tolerated, and justified through mythology and serve a place within society, all be it, not a high one (Nanda, 1999). America has

Culture is fundamental to understanding human experience. It makes the world inspiring, entertaining, enables effective communication, and
influences most factors of modern life, so it's no surprise that psychologists are interested in the impact it has. Sociocultural psychology and cross–
cultural psychology are two different approaches that explore cultural experience. The two disciplines, though different in their definitions of cultural
impact, share many of the same goals and ideas, and can arguably offer great insight to the other approach. The potential for collaboration between the
two disciplines to garner a rich insight into personal and social cultural influence means that the two approaches are by no means incompatible, and
their compatibility can offer a wealth of positive contribution to psychological research.
For the purposes of this piece, culture is defined as "the full range of human patterned experience" as described by Cole (1996) cited in Gla М†veanu
& Jovchelovitch (2017, p.113). This chapter also provides a description of the importance culture plays in psychological research.
Fundamental beliefs surrounding the very idea of culture separate the cross–cultural and sociocultural approach, which may seem to suggest
incompatibility. Sociocultural psychological understanding of culture is that it employs a "mutually constitutive" or "cyclic model". (Eom & Kim,
2014) The idea of culture in the sociocultural model is that culture influences people on a

Reflecting upon the lectures of Cross–Cultural management was very useful in linking the theory I learned with the experience I had, especially, it
provided the opportunity to 'step back' from the decisions I made and helped to identify the reasons of my behaviour in different cross–cultural
situations. Moreover, commenting upon past experience brought the chance to further develop social and communication skills, strengthen cultural
sensitivity and open–mindedness which are of a paramount significance in today's globalizing world.
This paper will reflect and critically analyse my understanding and views about three topics that were learnt during the semester and which mostly
interested me (caught my attraction?), namely, they are: Cross–Cultural Communication, Multicultural Teams and Conflict Management, and Ethics
and Global Business.
Being of Kazakh origin definitely influenced the way I perceive other cultures and impacted my behaviour and values I possessed. Generally, it can be
argued that I agreed with the context of the lectures of Cross–Cultural Management, and at the same time, these lessons assisted to change my opinions
about the previous cross–cultural experiences I had. However, I have to work and research more in order to achieve my goal of becoming a culturally
intelligent individual.

Disadvantages Of Cross Cultural Training
Cross–cultural training basically refers to offering techniques or training courses to a group people where a common cultural framework is inexistent
or not recognized so as to create awareness among them. It equips one with the knowledge and skills to be able to effectively and appropriately
interact with people from the host culture. Cross cultural training is hence an important business plan action for any organizations that looks forward to
expand internationally or get deals across the globe. Different cultures embrace different values. These values may vary greatly among different
cultures. The argument whether it is a mistake not to provide cross–cultural training or not can be determined by a number of factors. Cross–cultural
training greatly increases the chances of success in most global assignments. This is because it equips the employee with the necessary skills to
complete the assigned tasks regardless of the environment they are in. Basically, it instills a sense of confidence among various people. Acquisition of
the techniques and the skills provides an all–inclusive perspective of the managers. (Gundling, 2003, p. 89) Prior preparation that one undergoes
before the actual job reduces the culture shock. It enables the employees or managers to easily adapt as a result of the familiarity of different local
customs and practices as well as the frequent travels abroad. Consequently, it is easier to manage foreign employees who have undergone cross–cultural

Culture Class was where Essence and I first meet. Her first impression of me was that I was very high strung she believed that I didn't know how

Cross Cultural Communication Selection and Review
As Jeane Kirkpatrick once said, "Cross cultural experience and communication teaches us not simply that people have different beliefs, but that people
seek meaning and understand themselves and others in some sense as members of a universe ruled by God." Effective cross cultural communication
with people of different cultures can be especially challenging. Culture itself provides human beings with different ways of thinking and responding,
which includes a variety of different ways of seeing, hearing, and interpreting the world. While there are ways of translating the language of other
cultures in order to have the ability to effectively use cross cultural communication (most specifically for collaborative purposes), the same words can
mean different things to different people from different cultures, even when they speak the same language. In fact, when languages are diverse, and
translation has to be used to communicate (cross cultural), the potential for misunderstandings and difficulty rises. In the case of "Strategies for
Smooth and Effective Cross–Cultural Online Collaborative Learning" written by Junfeng Yang, Kinshuk Huiju, Sue–Jen Chen, and Ronghuai Huang,
describes the difficulties with cross cultural communication and the findings of a study done by Hangzhou Normal University (China), Athabasca
University (Canada), and University of North Caroline (United States) about this difficult subject and its gravity

As the world becomes more and more internationally connected, the need to understand people from different cultures and how to interact

I feel that my Cross–Cultural Competence and Dispute Resolution are both significant strengths. The reason I feel strongly about my Cross–Cultural

The reason that I find myself sometimes struggling when dealing with individuals that are from a high–context cultural is that I can often be very
sarcastic and overlook simply non–verbal cues that may let me know that I have offended someone or that they are not understanding what I am

satisfied with something or I am upset, when I am simply excited about what we are talking about. Furthermore, when I'm in disagreement with
someone on an issue I can struggle to bring myself to an understanding their view or position on the manner. I find this being a issue when I view the
position that the other person is misrepresenting their position, or they are not in a position that truly needs what they are looking for. As a squadron

Cross Cultural Conflict

  • 1. Cross Cultural Conflict 'The more people fail to communicate to each other, the more they develop personal assumptions that could lead to conflict.' (aipc.com, 16/02/14) There are many issues which may arise in regard to cross–cultural conflict, from both sides of the interaction. It is acknowledged, for instance, that this writer, like everyone else, has his own preconceptions that will influence how he processes data and behave, and which are primarily due to the 'accident' of his cultural up–bringing. These 'prejudices' may influence the way he works with others, especially if they go unrecognised by him. Fortunately, there are known and effective ways to resolve conflict which take cultural considerations into account. Also, such conflict can be reported ...show more content... ( Weiten, 2009).Assessment of the situation is necessary to determine the reason for the conflict, which task is aided by asking oneself such questions as; 'what are my expectations in the situation?, my assumptions about what is 'right' or 'wrong' in this situation?, my needs in this situation?, and am I overly emotional? If so, what can I do to calm down? (Open Colleges, 2011, p. 52). Although keeping calm is important, and the honest consideration of one's own possible contributions to the unhelpful tension, further more specific strategies may be necessary. These may include; using 'active listening' to assist in identifying the problem and the other person's understandings of their needs; responding respectfully to the other person and their cultural attitudes and behaviours, – even if you don't privately agree with them; being aware of one's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Introduction Cross–Cultural engagement is a process of learning to interact and communicate effectively with individuals in another culture. Engagement implies a dynamic, two–way process of communicating with individuals in the host culture, rather than simply learning about them from a distance. It also suggests active learning while crossing into another culture. Why is cross–cultural engagement important in a mission? In the Bible we see the twelve disciplines go on mission to spread the Gospel. Jesus sent them on mission in groups with instructions. We, in today's era also need set of instructions or need to know how to go on missions in other than our culture. It is a difficult and humungous task to carry out. One need to first know what their mission is and how to pursue their calling. My most favorite learning from this class is the work of Holy Spirit in a mission. Sunquist writes and explains about it very beautifully. He says, 'Christian mission is not a project or a function of the local church.' It is very important, in the first place, not to make false assumptions about a mission. Firstly, we need to clear our heads, realize and confess in our hearts that we are working for God's mission, not for a church or any organization. Secondly, we should discern and ask for help from the Holy Spirit to help and guide us through the mission that Holy Spirit has chosen for us. Cross–cultural engagement is led by the Holy Spirit. • 3. A Reflection On Cross Cultural Management Having been Australia for almost two years, I am provided opportunities to fully feel the multicultural atmosphere. In this reflection essay, I would like to share some experiences about cross–cultural collision and the effect of these in my life. This essay also includes what I learned through these experiences and what new insights I came up with to guide my life based on theories of IBUS6002 (Cross–cultural Management). The first experience happened in my daily life. Sylva who is a native Australia is my first landlady in Sydney. She has two daughters (Lily and Lucy) and a son (Shine). One weekend, I bought many fruits from the supermarket. The phone rang when I was washing them. I was in a hurry to answer the phone and forgot to turn off the tap. All of a sudden, Lucy shouted "Don't waste water" and "Turn off the tap". Sylva, Lily and Shine all look to me, I feel a little ashamed of myself and my face became red. Since then, I experienced something similar again and I felt more and more uncomfortable and inadaptation. In the end, I moved from Sylva's home to a Chinese landlord's home though her family is very friendly to me. Kim, Pan and Park (1998) state that people who are in high context cultures prefer to communicate by the physical form rather than use verbal pattern to convey information, especially directly through language. Obviously, Lucy got used to the low context communication mode because Australia belongs to the low context culture. Thus, the expression Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Cross-cultural Learning Essay I was lucky enough to be raised in a family that strongly felt its Irish and Celtic heritage should be celebrated. From them, I learned the beauty of my own culture, and an appreciation to learn the cultures of others. I brought that appreciation with me through life, and found it to make all the difference. My earliest cross–cultural experience that I can remember with clarity was the Spanish exchange student who was hosted by one of my aunts. Mai not only taught me about her culture, which in turn piqued an interest in the Spanish/Latino culture that continues to this day, but she also helped me to appreciate many small, seemingly insignificant aspects of my own culture. I built upon my cross–cultural...show more content... With these experiences with foreigners in my own territory under my belt, I was then lucky enough to have the experience reversed. I went on an ecological/tourist trip to Costa Rica, and my time there opened a wealth of new understanding on culture. Immersed in a language and a location completely foreign from my own, I began to see that those were not the only, nor even the most important, aspects of culture. There was a general ambience and mood that was completely different that what I was used to– the "tico ambiente" as the Costa Ricans would say. Everything that I learned there greatly interested me, from their views on the environment to machismo. In fact, this experience was the foundation for my choice of majors and for my continued interested in the field of sustainable development in Costa Rica. One of my final and most extensive cross–cultural experiences was this past summer. I was fortunate enough to study abroad for a month in Guatemala, and to live with a family during my stay. The pleasure and knowledge that I gained from this trip is immeasurable. Not only did it further cement my commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection– what person couldn't feel obligated to protect the beauty I saw–

  • 6. Cross Cultural Reflection Paper Reflection Paper After reading and doing the Cross Cultural Adaptability Inventory I have realized that there are many factors, which are effective for managing people in different cultures. This world is very diverse and it can be hard to keep up with everything that is going on in everyone's culture. Diversity is an attribute to a specific individual that shows that he or she is different from another individual. Managing diversity in the work place is important because it can benefit the workplace in many ways. Some examples are it can improve relationships with co–workers and clients, recruitment of new employees and just the overall attitude in the office. I think a lot of stereotyping goes on into today's world and that's why the world is in a bad place right now. If the world wasn't so judgmental I think it would be a peaceful place. We can all reduce the stereotyping by just simply try to reduce being prejudice and realizing that you are wrong. Don't judge other people and treat others how you want to be treated. I believe if we do these things managing people would be a lot easier. Often there is a lot of miscommunication in the workplace just do due lack of listening. Doing simple things everyday can do minimizing miscommunication in the work place. Practice simple communications skills, ask questions, listen, avoid conflicts with other workers and don't judge other people. Meeting new friends or talking to new people everyday is important because we interact with different people everyday. We should seek more opportunities to interact with different races and cultures, form healthy relationships with different cultures, be open to yourself and other people, trust other people and trust yourself. If we follow those things in the workplace I believe that we will build relationships and have a healthy work environment. There are five cross–cultural differences that I think are important to understand. The first one is power distance, which knows that there is unequal power distribution. The second one is Individualism versus collectivism, which means how loosely or tightly the society seems and how people choose to act as individuals and not members of groups. The third one is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Cross Cultural Perspectives Of Culture Essay Cross–Cultural Perspectives–900 words Culture refers to the values, rules, norms and behaviour as well as their products that govern the lifestyles of an individual or group. Cultural rules and behaviour are inherited from past generations, may be learned from others and are transmitted to other generation. Additionally, they embody the symbols and systems through which communication, attitudes and knowledge about life takes place. The set a certain group of people apart from others because the manifestation of cultural components represent the conscious elements of the individuals in one culture and helps register the differences or similarities in how other groups and cultures behave. Culture influences all aspects of an individual's life including food and dietary habits, dressing, communication with others and the relationship with other members of the community among others. One of the most critical aspects of culture in business is communication. Cross–cultural communication is one of the perspectives of cross–cultural lifestyles. It refers to communication that takes place from a person in a particular culture to another person in a different culture (). In a globalised world, cross–effective cultural communication is a growing concern among enterprises that operate in different cultures, multinational corporations and those employing staff from different cultures. • 8. Cultural Background And Intercultural Experience Yulia Zvereva ANTHR 1900 Journal #1 09/03/2017 Cultural background and previous intercultural experience Moving away from the country where you grew up is easy for some people, but for me, it was a challenge. I left Russia at the age of 14 to study in an English boarding school and spent three years there, then moved to Spain for three years to study at the IE University, now I came to America for my exchange semester and will return to Spain to finish my bachelor. All three of these countries are completely different to what I was used to and felt comfortable with. I never analysed why I felt so strange and never had many friends there. I just thought that people surrounding me were not 'my kind of people' they were just odd – I did not understand them and they did not understand me and, therefore, we never could bond. I have not spent enough time in the US so far to be able to reflect on it so I will focus on England and Spain compared to my Russian background. Not long ago my sister recommended me to read Richard Steers' book "Management across Cultures: Challenges and Strategies". It was a great book with many interesting insights but one particular chapter called "Culture, Values, and Worldviews" opened my eyes a little bit and helped me to understand why exactly I have never fully fit into any of the new countries I lived in. I understood that the problem was not in me but it is more of a cultural thing. According to Steers, there are five core cultural dimensions that all countries and their cultures can be analysed by – how the power and authority are distributed among the society, whether people are more individualistic or collectivistic, how they perceive the environment, their time and work patterns and the way societies try to reduce uncertainties. I come from an East European cluster with assumptions that we have hierarchical power distribution – the power belong to those on top of the hierarchy and there is an inequality within the society; we are collectivistic meaning that people tend to work towards the outcome that will benefit everyone in the group – not just one person; we are supposed to have a mastery–oriented perception of nature – trying to change it and take advantage of it; we have

Discuss with special reference to the social and cognitive domains of human development. Suitably illustrate your answer with insights drawn from your field work experiences. MADE BY: IRTIQUA ALI ID NO: SOCW10587 Culture: There are many perceptions about culture, different people give different views. Traditionally culture has been defined as the set of rules, guidelines, laws, symbols practiced across different contexts in the minds of the people. Culture can today be defined as human made part of environment(Herkovits,1955).The subjective view includes the multidimensional array of shared beliefs , norms , values of a particular group(Thomas,1994). Humans are seen as producers of culture and are being influenced by it (Segall, Desan, Berry,& Poortinga, 1999). Through the research, it helps to understand the cultural variation of the human development, behaviour and so on which develops psychology. Cross Cultural Psychology is different from cultural psychology which believes that human behaviour is governed by cultural differences whereas the cross cultural psychology includes the universality in behavioural and mental processes. So, it is a research methodology instead of being a field of psychology. Cross Cultural Psychology is the explicit, systematic comparison of psychological variables under different cultural conditions in order to specify the antecedents and processes that mediate the emergence of the behaviour differences. It is the empirical study of the members of various culture groups who have had different experiences that lead to predictable and significant differences in behaviour. b)Historical Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Cross Cultural Experience Research Paper Cross cultural experience I live in Spokane Washington and had a little trouble finding a true cultural experience, there seems to be more opportunities for them in the summer months vs winter. I decided that I would like to try an ethnic restaurant for two reasons; 1) Date night with my husband, 2) get out of cooking dinner. Again, Spokane is not inundated with ethnic restaurants and there is only a handful, and some had bad reviews and the food looked downright scary. I ended up choosing Top of India which serves authentic Indian food, curry and all. I am not a very adventurous person when it comes to food and spiciness so I have never tried Indian food, the mentioned of curry has me turning up my nose. Maybe, in part to the horror stories...show more content... I would definitely feel what Hansen refers to a cultural "bump" a slight uneasiness in the unfamiliar if I were to visit India (Lynch, 2011). Indian culture is deeply spiritual, but it is also complex made up of mystic, mythology and superstitions. (ISHA, 2014). Unlike, the American culture, which if religious, is mostly comprised of Monotheistic religions (one god). Another, vastly different practice is the Caste system in India, which you're socioeconomic and social status are determined by your birthright. Meaning, that you can never climb the social class ladder, your future and success are predetermined. So different from the US, where here you personally in charge of your future success and could be born into a low socio economic family and still rise above your circumstances through hard work and education. Money, is America's social class system regulator, and the more you have, the more your status, power and influence increases. Here, is another unusual fact I learned from a previous anthropology class, India is the only culture to recognize a 3rd gender possibility, which are called Hijras (Nanda, 1999). While, they are not always socially accepted, they are tolerated, and justified through mythology and serve a place within society, all be it, not a high one (Nanda, 1999). • 12. Culture is fundamental to understanding human experience. It makes the world inspiring, entertaining, enables effective communication, and influences most factors of modern life, so it's no surprise that psychologists are interested in the impact it has. Sociocultural psychology and cross– cultural psychology are two different approaches that explore cultural experience. The two disciplines, though different in their definitions of cultural impact, share many of the same goals and ideas, and can arguably offer great insight to the other approach. The potential for collaboration between the two disciplines to garner a rich insight into personal and social cultural influence means that the two approaches are by no means incompatible, and their compatibility can offer a wealth of positive contribution to psychological research. For the purposes of this piece, culture is defined as "the full range of human patterned experience" as described by Cole (1996) cited in Gla М†veanu & Jovchelovitch (2017, p.113). This chapter also provides a description of the importance culture plays in psychological research. Fundamental beliefs surrounding the very idea of culture separate the cross–cultural and sociocultural approach, which may seem to suggest incompatibility. Sociocultural psychological understanding of culture is that it employs a "mutually constitutive" or "cyclic model". (Eom & Kim, 2014) The idea of culture in the sociocultural model is that culture influences people on a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Reflecting upon the lectures of Cross–Cultural management was very useful in linking the theory I learned with the experience I had, especially, it provided the opportunity to 'step back' from the decisions I made and helped to identify the reasons of my behaviour in different cross–cultural situations. Moreover, commenting upon past experience brought the chance to further develop social and communication skills, strengthen cultural sensitivity and open–mindedness which are of a paramount significance in today's globalizing world. This paper will reflect and critically analyse my understanding and views about three topics that were learnt during the semester and which mostly interested me (caught my attraction?), namely, they are: Cross–Cultural Communication, Multicultural Teams and Conflict Management, and Ethics and Global Business. Being of Kazakh origin definitely influenced the way I perceive other cultures and impacted my behaviour and values I possessed. Generally, it can be argued that I agreed with the context of the lectures of Cross–Cultural Management, and at the same time, these lessons assisted to change my opinions about the previous cross–cultural experiences I had. However, I have to work and research more in order to achieve my goal of becoming a culturally intelligent individual. Disadvantages Of Cross Cultural Training Cross–cultural training basically refers to offering techniques or training courses to a group people where a common cultural framework is inexistent or not recognized so as to create awareness among them. It equips one with the knowledge and skills to be able to effectively and appropriately interact with people from the host culture. Cross cultural training is hence an important business plan action for any organizations that looks forward to expand internationally or get deals across the globe. Different cultures embrace different values. These values may vary greatly among different cultures. The argument whether it is a mistake not to provide cross–cultural training or not can be determined by a number of factors. Cross–cultural training greatly increases the chances of success in most global assignments. This is because it equips the employee with the necessary skills to complete the assigned tasks regardless of the environment they are in. Basically, it instills a sense of confidence among various people. Acquisition of the techniques and the skills provides an all–inclusive perspective of the managers. (Gundling, 2003, p. 89) Prior preparation that one undergoes before the actual job reduces the culture shock. It enables the employees or managers to easily adapt as a result of the familiarity of different local customs and practices as well as the frequent travels abroad. Consequently, it is easier to manage foreign employees who have undergone cross–cultural Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Cultural Experience Research Paper Culture Class was where Essence and I first meet. Her first impression of me was that I was very high strung she believed that I didn't know how to let loose and enjoy life. In a lot of ways she wasn't wrong, I was a little uptight, but that wasn't because I wanted to be it was because my parents had very high expectations for my future, and at the time it was in my best interest not to disappoint them. So I guess you could say that I was a bit of a Debbie downer in high school and even though I do feel that I could have let loose a bit more in high school I still could never bring myself to regret the choices I made back then because if it weren't for those choices I wouldn't be where I am today. I am the proud owner of "Serenity's Devine Design" which is the most recommended upscale bakery in Chicago Illinois. My bakery is the first place people come when they are looking to have dessert for an elegant event. So I honestly couldn't be happier with myself. Essence may have been spot on about my inability to have fun as a teenager, but I...show more content... I never understood why she would want to hide that part of herself, but I guess everyone has their ideas for making bad choices, and she must have been doing something right because she too has made a killing for her career. Because her beautiful mind and romantic imagination made her New York's bestselling romance and erotica author and she loves every minute of what she does. She and I were definitely complete opposites, the things that she found necessary in the past, in my opinion, were a total waste of time, but either way, we each found the other to be oddly intriguing. One day in class, Miss Dole decided to pair us all up for a class project. Of course, yin and yang were placed together as partners that being Essence and I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Cross Cultural Communication Selection and Review As Jeane Kirkpatrick once said, "Cross cultural experience and communication teaches us not simply that people have different beliefs, but that people seek meaning and understand themselves and others in some sense as members of a universe ruled by God." Effective cross cultural communication with people of different cultures can be especially challenging. Culture itself provides human beings with different ways of thinking and responding, which includes a variety of different ways of seeing, hearing, and interpreting the world. While there are ways of translating the language of other cultures in order to have the ability to effectively use cross cultural communication (most specifically for collaborative purposes), the same words can mean different things to different people from different cultures, even when they speak the same language. In fact, when languages are diverse, and translation has to be used to communicate (cross cultural), the potential for misunderstandings and difficulty rises. In the case of "Strategies for Smooth and Effective Cross–Cultural Online Collaborative Learning" written by Junfeng Yang, Kinshuk Huiju, Sue–Jen Chen, and Ronghuai Huang, describes the difficulties with cross cultural communication and the findings of a study done by Hangzhou Normal University (China), Athabasca University (Canada), and University of North Caroline (United States) about this difficult subject and its gravity Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The problem was what kind of food I should try and won't be too disappointed? So I called my brother who has numerous experiences in food. He told me that I should try a Greek food and there is a Greek restaurant in uptown called It's Greek to me, it is a nice place to go and offers delicious authentic Greek food. As soon as I took the first bite of my steak nuggets, all the sour potatoes thoughts were disappeared and I felt so happy chewing on the steak. It was so tender and delicious. My boyfriend's dish also looked amazing, he really loved it. I didn't try because I don't like the taste of lamb. Soon after we both cleaned out the plate and left no room for desserts. We had to promise each other that we would come back again next time. After that, I called my brother and thank him for the wonderful suggestion. He told me little bit about Greek culture on food. He said his Greek friend told him that food is very important in Greek, Greek people take food very seriously. • 21. Essay On Cross-Cultural Competence I feel that my Cross–Cultural Competence and Dispute Resolution are both significant strengths. The reason I feel strongly about my Cross–Cultural Competence stems from two factors first my ability, as I spoke about in previous modules to be able to fit into many different groups, and help drive the group toward a goal, and the factor I was raised by a family that was often interacting with people from many different backgrounds under the roof of one of my churches that my Dad served at as a Pastor. Being exposed to this throughout my life has helped me adapt to dealing with people from different backgrounds, working to find a common interest and goal and then moving forward without having to spend time analyzing each other in order to work...show more content... The reason that I find myself sometimes struggling when dealing with individuals that are from a high–context cultural is that I can often be very sarcastic and overlook simply non–verbal cues that may let me know that I have offended someone or that they are not understanding what I am saying. Additionally, I can get very emotional when talking about issue that I am passionate about and this sometimes can be construed as I'm not satisfied with something or I am upset, when I am simply excited about what we are talking about. Furthermore, when I'm in disagreement with someone on an issue I can struggle to bring myself to an understanding their view or position on the manner. I find this being a issue when I view the position that the other person is misrepresenting their position, or they are not in a position that truly needs what they are looking for. As a squadron superintendent this can rear its ugly head many times as I often have to interact with other squadrons in order to solve issues, and if I don't feel their issue is important I often find myself later realizing I didn't work to understand their position on the manner as to what I should've been more willing to work with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 22. Cultural Experience Paper For my second culture immersion project I went to eat at a Mexican restaurant. I went with my group members Ryan, Brian and Brian's girlfriend. I went this pass Tuesday after we had our group meeting. I don't recall the name of the restaurant but I know it was downtown Appleton near by the Walgreens. . This was good choice for the project because I never have eaten at an actually Mexican restaurant before. I felt really good during and after the experience. During the experience I was a little nervous because I didn't know if I was going o like the food. I usually don't experiment with most foods but I feel better now that I tried something new. After the experience was great. The experience was so good I would check it off that I wouldn't Get more content on HelpWriting.net
