Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Essay
Are you the same person you were five years ago, or even yesterday? Most likely no, people change all the time they grow up and mature. If you
have ever heard of the story of Romeo and Juliet you know it's not the happiest of stories. As soon as Romeo and Juliet meet you can see that Juliet's
character shapes and develops more when she is around Romeo, but is this for the better, Did Juliet falling in love cause her to draw away from her

Juliet is a sweet, obedient young girl who has been taken care of by her nurse all her life. At the beginning of the play she only dreams of her future
husband, but in the end she stabs herself in the side while hovering over her dead husband. Juliet meets Romeo at the ball and is married to him the
very next day, even though the day before she wasn't even interested in marriage. If Juliet hadn't met Romeo she would have listened to her Dad and
immediately married Paris, saying no to her Dad was a big change for Juliet. However is Juliet's character change for the better? Juliet turned into a
loyal, mature, faithful and sensible woman, but she also became very independent, strong willed, dishonest and disobedient. She had no problem
defying her parents to marry their enemy, Romeo. If Juliet hadn't become so faithful she probably wouldn't have taken her own life after finding
Romeos Poisoned body lying next to her. Juliet was forced to mature way too quickly from an innocent teen to an adult. There were good changes and
there were bad changes in Juliet's behavior, all of Juliet's good changes led to her own death.

Love in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Essay
What is love? Is it an object? Is it a feeling? Is it even attainable? Love is everything, it is an object, it is an emotion, and it cannot be bought, stolen,
given. Love can only be found. Love is discovered in the most unthinkable places during the most unimaginable times. It can never be predicted who
you fall in love with or when you do but all you do know is that you are in love and you would give anything for that person, and for your love to
always stay resilient through all other obstacles and distractions. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Montague's and Capulet's are know and expected
to hate each other until the miracle of love presented its self. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. They both fell in love when...show more

Once love is found, any obstacle presented will neither diminish nor terminate that love, even when tragedy strikes with the loss of a loved one.
Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet is one of the Capulet's that despises the Montague's and he will do anything in his power to kill them all, and once he
confronted Romeo, he met his fate and died by Romeo's sword. The Prince arrived to the scene and said "Romeo slew him, he slew Mercutio"
(III.i.181), him referring to Tybalt, and once realized, he banished Romeo out of the city. Once Juliet discovered the truth about Tybalt's death and
Romeo's banishment she said in grief "Romeo is banished– to speak that word is father, mother, Tybalt, Romeo, Juliet, all slain, all dead
– Romeo is
banished" (III.ii.122–124). Her heartache for Romeo's banishment more than her cousin Tybalt's death shows that he is her life, her world, and her
breath, and without him she would be nothing and life as she knows is would end, even through tragedy and anguish.
Love is being willing to sacrifice everything for your everything, and giving your family, friends, and life for one person. Romeo gave everything for
Juliet. He risked his family, his friends, his way of living, and his life in the pursuit of his true love. Juliet risked all that was central in influencing her

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a romantic tragedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595, which is over 400 years
ago. Romeo and Juliet are "two star–crossed lovers", who fell in love at first sight and struggle through circumstances, which ends with their death.
There are some characters that are to blame for their deaths and some more than others. The Montagues are someway to blame for the deaths of
Romeo and Juliet because of the feud have with the Capulets. However they are not one of the main protagonists in the play. On the other hand the
Capulets are greatly to blame. For example after Tybalts death if they did not force Juliet to marry Paris...show more content...
However there is a turning point when Lord Capulet tells Juliet to marry Paris, the nurse sides with her father and says," I think it best you

everything out of Love and that it was Fate that Tybalt died, so her father tried to cheer her up and tell her to marry Paris. Then in comes Friar
Lawrence, who write from the beginning has played a huge part in their deaths. For example he agrees to marry the pair, however he thought it
would stop the two households fighting," for this alliance may so happy prove to turn house holds' rancour to pure love." In the Elizabethan times
priests where highly thought of and therefore people would believe in what they say. Also in Elizabethan times Fate was greatly believed in. Was it
just a coincident that the note to Romeo couldn't there or how Friar Lawrence turns up just after Romeo has killed himself? Fate has been mentioned
right from the beginning of the play in the prologue," The fearful passage of their death marked love." I get the impression that Fate is very strong,"
greater power than we can contradict, hath thwarted our intents." Juliet is hugely to blame for her and Romeos death. She is very strong willed and

The Relevance of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Today I strongly agree with this statement the reason being, the story of Romeo and
Juliet shows arange of emotions and issues that people from any age, gender or background are able to relate to. This is one of many reasons why
the story is such a big success in today's culture. Shakespeare's story is focused on the two young lovers that can't be together and all the anguish that
surrounds them, this is true as it follows on in to day's society. At the beginning of the play Shakespeare lets the audience have an insight to what the
play may be about, he does that in such a way through the prologue which is featured in the beginning of the...show more content...
Audience will feel they are able to relate to the two lovers as them there selves have falling in love at first sight or maybe the audience might feel
Romeo just taking advantage of her so he can sleep with her and think of her as a quick thing, or it could be a crush and not love. In Shakespeare
time their were arrange marriage's in well establish families, this has lead me to believe that Shakespeare has taken that situation and related to his
play, this issue was raised, where Lady Capulet says to Juliet "how stands your dispositions to be married" this quote is saying how do you feel
about having an arranged marriage and the response that Juliet gives "It is an honour that I dream not of" in other words it is not her desire to be
married. This can still happen to families or societies that are in conflict. This can also be said to some parents in certain cultures for example
Muslim or Asian, they decide on who would be suited for their son or daughter. Today's audience may feel strongly with Juliet's decision because
people feel it's wrong of the parents to do that against her and that no one can choose who they fall in love with. On the other hand people may agree
with the parent's choice and they will see that their decision is to protect their daughter security and future happiness. I've noticed that there are more

William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Essay
William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Shakespeare's most famous tragedy is probably the tale of "Romeo and Juliet". The immortal tale of two
'star–cross'd lovers' destined to an early demise, originated in Italian folklore. Shakespeare's prologue is possibly the most insightful piece of the play
regarding their death and the explanation of it. The "ancient grudge" immediately sets the ominous tone of the play. This allows the audience to
understand that their "death" is the only way their "parents strife" could end: "But their children end nought could remove". The recurring theme of
fate and destiny, which frequents many Shakespeare's plays, is seen also in the prologue. Shakespeare...show more content...
The separation of Romeo and Juliet, leads to the plot twist where Juliet drinks the 'distilling liquor' to appear in death. While Romeo was intended
to wake her, a twist of fate means he doesn't get the letter and does not know that the death is faked. The plan to run away from the feud between
their parents wasn't free from danger, on the contrary it was the only way they could be together and escape the 'grudge'. The 'ancient grudge' is very
important to the play because they died in order to 'bury' the 'grudge'. Shakespeare puts an emphasis on the fact that the feud is about their name;
Romeo feels his name is 'hateful' for he knows because of it; he and Juliet couldn't be together. Similarly, Juliet knows if she was to be 'sworn her love
she would 'no longer be a Capulet'. The younger generation are dragged into the feud because of the family they're born into. Juliet questions 'what's in
a name?' which shows she doesn't understand that their name means they automatically have a 'grudge' against each other. Another input towards the
death of 'Romeo and Juliet' would be their parents. Shakespeare suggests that Romeo and Juliet barely know their parents and find it difficult to confide
in them or they would have spoken about their love rather then trying to run away.

Romeo and Juliet: Act 1 Scene 5
In William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, about two love struck teenagers whom aren't able to be together due to their families feud/ social
situation. There are two key themes that of love and hate. Before Romeo and Juliet meet, the audience is only aware that he is a Montague and that she
is a Capulet. This adds to the scene being so dramatically effective as do other happenings throughout the length of the scene. These include the speech
of Capulet and the happy and joyous mood of the party, The romantic speech of Romeo, The hatred and harshness ofTybalt's speech, a direct contrast
with that of Romeo's and the drama when the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet first meet.
At the start of Act 1 scene...show more content...
Romeo's speech identifies to the audience for the first time, how Romeo feels about Juliet. That Juliet's beauty is unmatched by those in the room and
that Romeo has never loved before but he now thinks he has found her, Juliet the one. At this point the audience realises just what type of love and
passion Romeo feels for Juliet. This event adds much more dramatic effect and intensifies the scene. At this instant a height of drama is achieved, but
Shakespeare lifts it higher with a stronger and more hating speech, that of Tybalt's.
Shakespeare creates effective drama by introducing the speech of Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Tybalts speech is strong and hateful towards Romeo, as he
is now aware that there is one, if not more Montague's present. By using dialogue such as ' what dare that slave come hither' and 'uncle, this is a
Montague, our foe' Shakespeare is able to translate the hate and rivalry, possessed between Romeo and Tybalt and generally the drama and conflict
between Capulet and Montague. This is very dramatically effective. Capulet's response to Tybalt, is to say that he has heard only good things about
Romeo, therefore the party must go on. More time for more drama is allowed with no interruption of the party, therefore the passionate meeting of
Romeo and Juliet is allowed to take place.
Shakespeare creates more effective drama by scripting the first words, followed then by a kiss,

In the tragic romance, Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare displays an example of how teenage love can embrace the feelings of the young but
also cause destruction, not only in their lives but also the people's lives around them. This story shows how others opinions and thoughts can affect
the people close to them. But who is responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? The death of these star crossed lovers was not only the
teenagers fault but also their family and friends such as, their parents, Friar Lawrence, and the nurse. Romeo and Juliet's parents play a major role in the
death of their children; both families hate each other due to an ancient feud between the Montague's and Capulet's. When Romeo and Juliet met each

The Nurse is the only other person that knew about the secret relationship between Romeo and Juliet. She was sort of Juliet's messenger in the
story, she told Romeo about the marriage and when he was going to see Juliet again. Then towards the ending of the story she started realizing that
Juliet's parents were not going to let her marry anyone but Paris. So Nurse tried to help Juliet realize that, and it only made Juliet more upset and
run off to Friar. When Juliet was upset she told Nurse that she was going to pay respects, nurse knew that wasn't true and did nothing about it, if
Nurse would have stopped Juliet from going to Friar she could have prevented the whole plan and stopped the events leading to Romeo and Juliet's
death. But Romeo and Juliet made it very difficult for the Nurse and Friar help them because they wanted nothing but to be together and they wouldn't
wait for anything. In the end everyone had something to do with their deaths big or small one event lead to the other and caused the tragic ending.
The whole story could lead back to the ancient feud, but in the end it could have been prevented. They died because of many things and it would be
difficult to pinpoint one single event, no one person could have prevented the entire ending, but it didn't have to end the way it did. Romeo and Juliet
are two young teens who wanted only one thing, to be together peacefully;

William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet Essay
There is no questioning that William Shakespeare's plays are influential. They were written centuries ago, yet are still enjoyed by people to this day,
and hold a place in modern high school and university curricula. However, as with many other literary works, some of Shakespeare's plays are
received better by audiences and readers than others. Romeo and Juliet, the tragic story of two "star–cross'd lovers" (Shakespeare, 5) who pursue their
love for each other despite the feud between their families, is considered by some to be one of Shakespeare's greatest works; however, the question
of whether it is his greatest tragedy remains under dispute. This play is different from other Shakespearean tragedies in that in several ways, it does
not fit the traditional characteristics or structure of a tragic work. It can be feasibly argued that this, as well as the fact that the main characters are
much younger than those in Shakespeare's other plays, takes away from the tragic element. Through analyzing Romeo and Juliet, one is able to
reasonably conclude that while it is classified as a tragedy, it is not a very effective one. One of the unique things about Romeo and Juliet is that the
structure of the first three acts more closely follows that of a comedy, i.e. a non–tragic play, than that of a tragedy. In a comedy, the protagonist must
overcome obstacles in order to solve a problem, usually with the help of another character. This is seen quite clearly in acts one to three: Romeo

Essay On The Conflict Between Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare's play, "Romeo and Juliet," takes place in Verona
– a city in Italy which is governed by a prince. There is also a Friar named
Laurence, who is a religious figure that citizens go to for advice and to be married. In the City lives the Capulets and the Montagues who have been
disputing for generations. Both families have children and one child from each family are the protagonists– Romeo is a member of the Montagues and
Juliet is a member of the Capulets. Romeo and Juliet will end up falling for each other. However, they end up dying young because Friar Laurence

You can see the "Two households, both alike in dignity" (Act I PROLOGUE) fight even when they are so similar. The conflict of the two
households quarreling arises when Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulet's party and they both fall for each other at first sight hence the phrase "love
at first sight". At the time, religion was very important so when Romeo would talk about Juliet, he would say "Oh, then, dear saint, let lips do
what hands do. They pray; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair" (ACT I SCENE V). In this time, Romeo is asking for Juliet to kiss her because
when you pray, your hands touch; and Romeo wants to do with lips what hands do. This comparison shows the connection from everyday life to
religion, which is part of the reason Romeo went to Friar Laurence. Romeo and Juliet are also Roman Catholic which means that once they marry,
they cannot divorce or be remarried. Friar Laurence knew this going into the marriage and the fact that Juliet was to be soon married off to Paris in
a political wedding. Friar approved and said, "For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love" (ACT II SCENE
III). He later marries them in secret without telling anyone which will lead to two other mistakes made by Friar

Topic Sentence: Who, in your opinion, is most to blame for this tragedy?
One of Shakespeare's most known plays is the love story between Romeo and Juliet, which ends up as a tragedy. There are many different reasons and
causes to why this tragedy occurred between the two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurance, their parents and also the element of fate. Romeo
and Juliet are two young lovers who seem to rush the love between each other by becoming married to after only a matter of hours of knowing each
other. Friar Laurence who should have been smarter in his actions by marry the two which ending up causing this tragedy, also both Romeo and Juliets

It is irreversible. From the first page of the play we hear about fate, Romeo and Juliet are mentioned as `star–crossed lovers' meaning that fate will
bring them together. It also says that their love is `death mark'd' which means that their fate will be tragic. This suggest to us that the end up result
was always going to be the same no matter of what different actions Romeo and Juliet made. The Fate of Romeo and Juliet's love could also be
questioned as unlucky and coincidental. The Montague boys are accidently invited to the Capulet's "feast" were Romeo and Juliet meet. Friar
Laurence's second letter is never sent to Romeo because Romeo's cousin reaches Romeo before the letter ever has a chance. Romeo arrives at the
tomb just before Romeo sees Juliet waking up and kills himself think she is dead, which results in Juliet killing herself.
In conclusion I believe that Friar Laurence is mainly to blame for this tragedy between Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet were just too naГЇve
to think about their actions full effect, when Friar Laurence who is a much older and should have been much wiser did not think of the consequences
when he really should of and gave them both horrible advice. That is why a believe Romeo and Juliet's tragedy is to be blamed on Friar Laurence's

Although the story of Romeo and Juliet is over 500 years old, it is as relevant and appealing today as it was when first performed.
Although dated, the story of Romeo and Juliet still holds great appeal and relevance to today's society, despite the differences in morals and values
between William Shakespeare's audience 500 years ago, and Baz Luhrmann's audience today. The arising issues of order and authority, fate and love

The general perspective of society is represented throughout the film by panoramic shots of the city of Verona, involving violent, hectic scenes such
as police raids, gun fights, speeding cars and other generally violent actions. The scenes are quick and vivid; the sequencing constantly changing and
moving quickly. The violence seen is similar to the play in that it is a vital role in the morals of the plot.
The panoramic shots of the city also reveal the giant religious statue of Jesus, in the centre of the city. The statue of Jesus is first seen in the opening
scene, which introduces the two family households and major business owners, Montague and Capulet: the background is a panoramic shot of two
large skyscrapers separated by the statue, with the foreground of two photographs of Old Montague and Old Capulet, also separated by the statue. This
paves the way for continuous religious references during the film.
The large skyscrapers representing Montague and Capulet businesses are symbols of wealth and power. The audience is introduced to the hatred
between the two families and the statue is seen as a barrier protecting from violence and hatred.
The violence is then continued when the film introduces the Montague and Capulet boys in the 'garage' scene. Luhrmann uses the audiences' assumed
knowledge of society to create moods about the characters. He uses preset genres created and assumed with

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet: Movie Review Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet displayed a post–modern version of William Shakespeare's play
as a corrupted Verona with two fighting families, the Capulets and Montagues. This interpretation of the play follows the key elements of the original
work – the turning point of the death of Tybalt and the climax of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet – but, is shown in such a crazy, full–blown way that
causes the audience to stray from the message it's trying to deliver. Luhrmann's movie making process took away or changed ideas from the original
play that people could either enjoy or hate. The change of the storyline diverts from what Shakespeare was going for. The scene of Mercutio teasing
the Nurse is completely cut out of the film which inhibits the audience from seeing one of the funniest scenes of the play. Also, in the scene where
Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence for help, Juliet points the gun at Friar Lawrence. This action makes Juliet seem...show more content...
Right in the beginning, Benvolio is violent instead of his peace–loving self in the play. The fact that the actors are talking in Shakespearean English
also makes the characters' acting seem forced, although many people love the classic dialogue. Another criteria that people can agree or disagree
upon is the music of the film. There are times where it is appropriate like during the party where everything is loud and crazy until Romeo meets
Juliet, but it becomes distracting. At the end when Romeo is going to see Juliet dead, the music sounds like it more of an adventure than it is a
dramatic scene. The setting as well as the music distracts the audience of what's going on. Instead of a "fair Verona", Verona's appearance in the film
is corrupt and trashy with too many things going on at once. Instead of a balcony scene, Luhrmann gives the audience a pool scene, which takes away

William Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, tells the story of too unfortunate lovers caught up in their

William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet Essay
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star–crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately
reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare 's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most
frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic
romances stretching back to antiquity. The plot is based on an Italian tale translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by
Arthur Brooke in 1562, and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both, but
expanded the plot by developing a number of supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591
and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. The text of the first quarto version was of poor quality, however, and later editions
corrected the text to conform more closely with Shakespeare 's original. Shakespeare 's use of his poetic dramatic structure (especially effects such as
switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub–plots to embellish the story) has
been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the
character develops. Romeo, for

conversation about getting married, which implies that she is desperate to do so. Another time Juliet displays her impatience and desperation is
when she's waiting for the Nurse to come back to hear the information on the wedding with Romeo. Juliet says, "I sent the nurse at nine o'clock.
Maybe she couldn't find him. Oh, she's slow! ... Now it's noon! That's three hours since 9 o'clock!" (Shakespeare 125). This quote proves how
impatient Juliet is, and it also shows how desperate she is to find out what the Nurse has to say. She's only thinking about herself and not about
what's taking the Nurse so long to get home. Juliet's impatience and desperation takes away from her personality of kindness. Romeo and Juliet have
similar traits. They not only express their personality, but their relationship is taken to a higher level when they speak to each other, which reveals
other traits. Romeo is also desperate just like Juliet. An example is when Romeo finds Juliet in her grave, and thinks she is actually dead, when really
she is only unconscious from the potion she took from the friar. Because Romeo didn't know that, he assumed that she was dead and bought poison to
commit suicide to be with his wife. He says, "Come,

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In this essay I will examine the role that Friar Lawrence plays in Romeo and Juliet. The play of Romeo and
Juliet was written during 1594 – 1596 but was set 100 years earlier. It is a tragic love story which was based on a poem called, 'The Tragicall Hystory
of Romeus and Juliet' (1562). Although there is a big time gap from when it was written and now, it doesn't affect the way we see the story today.
Things that happen in the story still happen today. We still fall in love and some people may have experienced the same feelings that were felt in the
story. In the story Romeo is an 18 year old boy who falls madly in love with Juliet, a 13 year old girl....show more content...
When Romeo confessed to him that he wanted to marry Juliet, Friar Lawrence was shocked and confused. He shows how he feels by saying,
"Young men's love then lies, Not truly in their hearts but in their eyes". By saying this he is showing that he is confused, he was in love with
Rosaline not so long ago. He also says, "Women may fall, when there's no strength in men". I think he says this to try and convince Romeo that
people fall in and out of love all the time. He might be trying to say that it won't be long until he falls in love with someone new, by trying to
convince Romeo not to marry her, Romeo might then decide not to marry Juliet and Friar Lawrence would not lose any trust or respect from the
two families or any other confessors. When he hears what Romeo has to say, he raises his voice and starts to talk fast as he is still shocked from
Romeo's news. He doesn't stop to think about what he is saying. He does this to show Romeo that he may be making the wrong choice instead of
just telling him. In the two different videos of Romeo and Juliet we watched, it gave two very different ways on we see Friar Lawrence in that
particular scene. In the older video we see him in a field picking various plants and herbs and placing them into a small basket he carried with him.
The scene was set on a

Romeo And Juliet By William Shakespeare Essay

  • 1. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Essay Are you the same person you were five years ago, or even yesterday? Most likely no, people change all the time they grow up and mature. If you have ever heard of the story of Romeo and Juliet you know it's not the happiest of stories. As soon as Romeo and Juliet meet you can see that Juliet's character shapes and develops more when she is around Romeo, but is this for the better, Did Juliet falling in love cause her to draw away from her family? As soon as Romeo and Juliet meet, you can see that Juliet's character shapes and develops more when she is around Romeo, but is this for the better, Did Juliet's falling in love cause her to draw away from her family? Juliet is a sweet, obedient young girl who has been taken care of by her nurse all her life. At the beginning of the play she only dreams of her future husband, but in the end she stabs herself in the side while hovering over her dead husband. Juliet meets Romeo at the ball and is married to him the very next day, even though the day before she wasn't even interested in marriage. If Juliet hadn't met Romeo she would have listened to her Dad and immediately married Paris, saying no to her Dad was a big change for Juliet. However is Juliet's character change for the better? Juliet turned into a loyal, mature, faithful and sensible woman, but she also became very independent, strong willed, dishonest and disobedient. She had no problem defying her parents to marry their enemy, Romeo. If Juliet hadn't become so faithful she probably wouldn't have taken her own life after finding Romeos Poisoned body lying next to her. Juliet was forced to mature way too quickly from an innocent teen to an adult. There were good changes and there were bad changes in Juliet's behavior, all of Juliet's good changes led to her own death. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Love in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Essay What is love? Is it an object? Is it a feeling? Is it even attainable? Love is everything, it is an object, it is an emotion, and it cannot be bought, stolen, given. Love can only be found. Love is discovered in the most unthinkable places during the most unimaginable times. It can never be predicted who you fall in love with or when you do but all you do know is that you are in love and you would give anything for that person, and for your love to always stay resilient through all other obstacles and distractions. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Montague's and Capulet's are know and expected to hate each other until the miracle of love presented its self. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. They both fell in love when...show more content... Once love is found, any obstacle presented will neither diminish nor terminate that love, even when tragedy strikes with the loss of a loved one. Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet is one of the Capulet's that despises the Montague's and he will do anything in his power to kill them all, and once he confronted Romeo, he met his fate and died by Romeo's sword. The Prince arrived to the scene and said "Romeo slew him, he slew Mercutio" (III.i.181), him referring to Tybalt, and once realized, he banished Romeo out of the city. Once Juliet discovered the truth about Tybalt's death and Romeo's banishment she said in grief "Romeo is banished– to speak that word is father, mother, Tybalt, Romeo, Juliet, all slain, all dead – Romeo is banished" (III.ii.122–124). Her heartache for Romeo's banishment more than her cousin Tybalt's death shows that he is her life, her world, and her breath, and without him she would be nothing and life as she knows is would end, even through tragedy and anguish. Love is being willing to sacrifice everything for your everything, and giving your family, friends, and life for one person. Romeo gave everything for Juliet. He risked his family, his friends, his way of living, and his life in the pursuit of his true love. Juliet risked all that was central in influencing her to be the person she is, even Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a romantic tragedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595, which is over 400 years ago. Romeo and Juliet are "two star–crossed lovers", who fell in love at first sight and struggle through circumstances, which ends with their death. There are some characters that are to blame for their deaths and some more than others. The Montagues are someway to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because of the feud have with the Capulets. However they are not one of the main protagonists in the play. On the other hand the Capulets are greatly to blame. For example after Tybalts death if they did not force Juliet to marry Paris...show more content... However there is a turning point when Lord Capulet tells Juliet to marry Paris, the nurse sides with her father and says," I think it best you married the County." She then leaves Juliet devastated and to her fate. Some people would think that the nurse is not blame because she did everything out of Love and that it was Fate that Tybalt died, so her father tried to cheer her up and tell her to marry Paris. Then in comes Friar Lawrence, who write from the beginning has played a huge part in their deaths. For example he agrees to marry the pair, however he thought it would stop the two households fighting," for this alliance may so happy prove to turn house holds' rancour to pure love." In the Elizabethan times priests where highly thought of and therefore people would believe in what they say. Also in Elizabethan times Fate was greatly believed in. Was it just a coincident that the note to Romeo couldn't there or how Friar Lawrence turns up just after Romeo has killed himself? Fate has been mentioned right from the beginning of the play in the prologue," The fearful passage of their death marked love." I get the impression that Fate is very strong," greater power than we can contradict, hath thwarted our intents." Juliet is hugely to blame for her and Romeos death. She is very strong willed and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Relevance of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Today I strongly agree with this statement the reason being, the story of Romeo and Juliet shows arange of emotions and issues that people from any age, gender or background are able to relate to. This is one of many reasons why the story is such a big success in today's culture. Shakespeare's story is focused on the two young lovers that can't be together and all the anguish that surrounds them, this is true as it follows on in to day's society. At the beginning of the play Shakespeare lets the audience have an insight to what the play may be about, he does that in such a way through the prologue which is featured in the beginning of the...show more content... Audience will feel they are able to relate to the two lovers as them there selves have falling in love at first sight or maybe the audience might feel Romeo just taking advantage of her so he can sleep with her and think of her as a quick thing, or it could be a crush and not love. In Shakespeare time their were arrange marriage's in well establish families, this has lead me to believe that Shakespeare has taken that situation and related to his play, this issue was raised, where Lady Capulet says to Juliet "how stands your dispositions to be married" this quote is saying how do you feel about having an arranged marriage and the response that Juliet gives "It is an honour that I dream not of" in other words it is not her desire to be married. This can still happen to families or societies that are in conflict. This can also be said to some parents in certain cultures for example Muslim or Asian, they decide on who would be suited for their son or daughter. Today's audience may feel strongly with Juliet's decision because people feel it's wrong of the parents to do that against her and that no one can choose who they fall in love with. On the other hand people may agree with the parent's choice and they will see that their decision is to protect their daughter security and future happiness. • 5. William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Essay William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Shakespeare's most famous tragedy is probably the tale of "Romeo and Juliet". The immortal tale of two 'star–cross'd lovers' destined to an early demise, originated in Italian folklore. Shakespeare's prologue is possibly the most insightful piece of the play regarding their death and the explanation of it. The "ancient grudge" immediately sets the ominous tone of the play. This allows the audience to understand that their "death" is the only way their "parents strife" could end: "But their children end nought could remove". The recurring theme of fate and destiny, which frequents many Shakespeare's plays, is seen also in the prologue. Shakespeare...show more content... The separation of Romeo and Juliet, leads to the plot twist where Juliet drinks the 'distilling liquor' to appear in death. While Romeo was intended to wake her, a twist of fate means he doesn't get the letter and does not know that the death is faked. The plan to run away from the feud between their parents wasn't free from danger, on the contrary it was the only way they could be together and escape the 'grudge'. The 'ancient grudge' is very important to the play because they died in order to 'bury' the 'grudge'. Shakespeare puts an emphasis on the fact that the feud is about their name; Romeo feels his name is 'hateful' for he knows because of it; he and Juliet couldn't be together. Similarly, Juliet knows if she was to be 'sworn her love she would 'no longer be a Capulet'. The younger generation are dragged into the feud because of the family they're born into. Juliet questions 'what's in a name?' which shows she doesn't understand that their name means they automatically have a 'grudge' against each other. Another input towards the death of 'Romeo and Juliet' would be their parents. Shakespeare suggests that Romeo and Juliet barely know their parents and find it difficult to confide in them or they would have spoken about their love rather then trying to run away. • 6. Essay about Romeo and Juliet: Act 1 Scene 5 Romeo and Juliet: Act 1 Scene 5 In William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, about two love struck teenagers whom aren't able to be together due to their families feud/ social situation. There are two key themes that of love and hate. Before Romeo and Juliet meet, the audience is only aware that he is a Montague and that she is a Capulet. This adds to the scene being so dramatically effective as do other happenings throughout the length of the scene. These include the speech of Capulet and the happy and joyous mood of the party, The romantic speech of Romeo, The hatred and harshness ofTybalt's speech, a direct contrast with that of Romeo's and the drama when the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet first meet. At the start of Act 1 scene...show more content... Romeo's speech identifies to the audience for the first time, how Romeo feels about Juliet. That Juliet's beauty is unmatched by those in the room and that Romeo has never loved before but he now thinks he has found her, Juliet the one. At this point the audience realises just what type of love and passion Romeo feels for Juliet. This event adds much more dramatic effect and intensifies the scene. At this instant a height of drama is achieved, but Shakespeare lifts it higher with a stronger and more hating speech, that of Tybalt's. Shakespeare creates effective drama by introducing the speech of Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Tybalts speech is strong and hateful towards Romeo, as he is now aware that there is one, if not more Montague's present. By using dialogue such as ' what dare that slave come hither' and 'uncle, this is a Montague, our foe' Shakespeare is able to translate the hate and rivalry, possessed between Romeo and Tybalt and generally the drama and conflict between Capulet and Montague. This is very dramatically effective. Capulet's response to Tybalt, is to say that he has heard only good things about Romeo, therefore the party must go on. More time for more drama is allowed with no interruption of the party, therefore the passionate meeting of Romeo and Juliet is allowed to take place. Shakespeare creates more effective drama by scripting the first words, followed then by a kiss, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. In the tragic romance, Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare displays an example of how teenage love can embrace the feelings of the young but also cause destruction, not only in their lives but also the people's lives around them. This story shows how others opinions and thoughts can affect the people close to them. But who is responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? The death of these star crossed lovers was not only the teenagers fault but also their family and friends such as, their parents, Friar Lawrence, and the nurse. Romeo and Juliet's parents play a major role in the death of their children; both families hate each other due to an ancient feud between the Montague's and Capulet's. When Romeo and Juliet met each other...show more content... The Nurse is the only other person that knew about the secret relationship between Romeo and Juliet. She was sort of Juliet's messenger in the story, she told Romeo about the marriage and when he was going to see Juliet again. Then towards the ending of the story she started realizing that Juliet's parents were not going to let her marry anyone but Paris. So Nurse tried to help Juliet realize that, and it only made Juliet more upset and run off to Friar. When Juliet was upset she told Nurse that she was going to pay respects, nurse knew that wasn't true and did nothing about it, if Nurse would have stopped Juliet from going to Friar she could have prevented the whole plan and stopped the events leading to Romeo and Juliet's death. But Romeo and Juliet made it very difficult for the Nurse and Friar help them because they wanted nothing but to be together and they wouldn't wait for anything. In the end everyone had something to do with their deaths big or small one event lead to the other and caused the tragic ending. The whole story could lead back to the ancient feud, but in the end it could have been prevented. They died because of many things and it would be difficult to pinpoint one single event, no one person could have prevented the entire ending, but it didn't have to end the way it did. • 8. William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet Essay There is no questioning that William Shakespeare's plays are influential. They were written centuries ago, yet are still enjoyed by people to this day, and hold a place in modern high school and university curricula. However, as with many other literary works, some of Shakespeare's plays are received better by audiences and readers than others. Romeo and Juliet, the tragic story of two "star–cross'd lovers" (Shakespeare, 5) who pursue their love for each other despite the feud between their families, is considered by some to be one of Shakespeare's greatest works; however, the question of whether it is his greatest tragedy remains under dispute. This play is different from other Shakespearean tragedies in that in several ways, it does not fit the traditional characteristics or structure of a tragic work. It can be feasibly argued that this, as well as the fact that the main characters are much younger than those in Shakespeare's other plays, takes away from the tragic element. Through analyzing Romeo and Juliet, one is able to reasonably conclude that while it is classified as a tragedy, it is not a very effective one. One of the unique things about Romeo and Juliet is that the structure of the first three acts more closely follows that of a comedy, i.e. a non–tragic play, than that of a tragedy. In a comedy, the protagonist must overcome obstacles in order to solve a problem, usually with the help of another character. This is seen quite clearly in acts one to three: Romeo Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There is also a Friar named Laurence, who is a religious figure that citizens go to for advice and to be married. In the City lives the Capulets and the Montagues who have been disputing for generations. Both families have children and one child from each family are the protagonists– Romeo is a member of the Montagues and Juliet is a member of the Capulets. You can see the "Two households, both alike in dignity" (Act I PROLOGUE) fight even when they are so similar. The conflict of the two households quarreling arises when Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulet's party and they both fall for each other at first sight hence the phrase "love at first sight". At the time, religion was very important so when Romeo would talk about Juliet, he would say "Oh, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. They pray; grant thou, lest faith turn to despair" (ACT I SCENE V). In this time, Romeo is asking for Juliet to kiss her because when you pray, your hands touch; and Romeo wants to do with lips what hands do. This comparison shows the connection from everyday life to religion, which is part of the reason Romeo went to Friar Laurence. Romeo and Juliet are also Roman Catholic which means that once they marry, they cannot divorce or be remarried. Friar Laurence knew this going into the marriage and the fact that Juliet was to be soon married off to Paris in a political wedding. Friar approved and said, "For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancor to pure love" (ACT II SCENE III). He later marries them in secret without telling anyone which will lead to two other mistakes made by Friar Get more content on HelpWriting.net

One of Shakespeare's most known plays is the love story between Romeo and Juliet, which ends up as a tragedy. There are many different reasons and causes to why this tragedy occurred between the two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurance, their parents and also the element of fate. Romeo and Juliet are two young lovers who seem to rush the love between each other by becoming married to after only a matter of hours of knowing each other. It is irreversible. From the first page of the play we hear about fate, Romeo and Juliet are mentioned as `star–crossed lovers' meaning that fate will bring them together. It also says that their love is `death mark'd' which means that their fate will be tragic. This suggest to us that the end up result was always going to be the same no matter of what different actions Romeo and Juliet made. The Fate of Romeo and Juliet's love could also be questioned as unlucky and coincidental. The Montague boys are accidently invited to the Capulet's "feast" were Romeo and Juliet meet. Friar Laurence's second letter is never sent to Romeo because Romeo's cousin reaches Romeo before the letter ever has a chance. Romeo arrives at the tomb just before Romeo sees Juliet waking up and kills himself think she is dead, which results in Juliet killing herself. In conclusion I believe that Friar Laurence is mainly to blame for this tragedy between Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet were just too naГЇve to think about their actions full effect, when Friar Laurence who is a much older and should have been much wiser did not think of the consequences when he really should of and gave them both horrible advice. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Although the story of Romeo and Juliet is over 500 years old, it is as relevant and appealing today as it was when first performed. Although dated, the story of Romeo and Juliet still holds great appeal and relevance to today's society, despite the differences in morals and values between William Shakespeare's audience 500 years ago, and Baz Luhrmann's audience today. The arising issues of order and authority, fate and love entertain/ed and appeals/ed to both viewers in different ways. The general perspective of society is represented throughout the film by panoramic shots of the city of Verona, involving violent, hectic scenes such as police raids, gun fights, speeding cars and other generally violent actions. The scenes are quick and vivid; the sequencing constantly changing and moving quickly. The violence seen is similar to the play in that it is a vital role in the morals of the plot. The panoramic shots of the city also reveal the giant religious statue of Jesus, in the centre of the city. The statue of Jesus is first seen in the opening scene, which introduces the two family households and major business owners, Montague and Capulet: the background is a panoramic shot of two large skyscrapers separated by the statue, with the foreground of two photographs of Old Montague and Old Capulet, also separated by the statue. This paves the way for continuous religious references during the film. The large skyscrapers representing Montague and Capulet businesses are symbols of wealth and power. The audience is introduced to the hatred between the two families and the statue is seen as a barrier protecting from violence and hatred. The violence is then continued when the film introduces the Montague and Capulet boys in the 'garage' scene. Luhrmann uses the audiences' assumed knowledge of society to create moods about the characters. He uses preset genres created and assumed with

  • 13. Romeo And Juliet Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet: Movie Review Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet displayed a post–modern version of William Shakespeare's play as a corrupted Verona with two fighting families, the Capulets and Montagues. This interpretation of the play follows the key elements of the original work – the turning point of the death of Tybalt and the climax of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet – but, is shown in such a crazy, full–blown way that causes the audience to stray from the message it's trying to deliver. Luhrmann's movie making process took away or changed ideas from the original play that people could either enjoy or hate. The change of the storyline diverts from what Shakespeare was going for. The scene of Mercutio teasing the Nurse is completely cut out of the film which inhibits the audience from seeing one of the funniest scenes of the play. Also, in the scene where Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence for help, Juliet points the gun at Friar Lawrence. This action makes Juliet seem...show more content... Right in the beginning, Benvolio is violent instead of his peace–loving self in the play. The fact that the actors are talking in Shakespearean English also makes the characters' acting seem forced, although many people love the classic dialogue. Another criteria that people can agree or disagree upon is the music of the film. There are times where it is appropriate like during the party where everything is loud and crazy until Romeo meets Juliet, but it becomes distracting. At the end when Romeo is going to see Juliet dead, the music sounds like it more of an adventure than it is a dramatic scene. The setting as well as the music distracts the audience of what's going on. Instead of a "fair Verona", Verona's appearance in the film is corrupt and trashy with too many things going on at once. Instead of a balcony scene, Luhrmann gives the audience a pool scene, which takes away one of Shakespeare's most famous Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Classical Greek tragedy influenced Renaissance writers greatly Shakespeare was no exception. According to the dictionary, fate is 'the supposed force, principle, or power that predetermines event.' • 19. William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star–crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare 's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. The plot is based on an Italian tale translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562, and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both, but expanded the plot by developing a number of supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. The text of the first quarto version was of poor quality, however, and later editions corrected the text to conform more closely with Shakespeare 's original. Shakespeare 's use of his poetic dramatic structure (especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub–plots to embellish the story) has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Montagues and Capulets have ongoing feuds with each other. Romeo Montague meets Juliet Capulet at one of her family's parties, instantly fall in love, and decide to secretly get married the the day after the party. Throughout the play, both Romeo and Juliet show character traits they have which leads to a tragic ending. Romeo is shown to be poetic and romantic. He and his friends are on their way to the Capulet party when his friends encourage him to dance, but he refuses. He is still sad about Rosaline, the woman he loves. She doesn't love him back as she has plans to become a nun. Romeo says, "Is love really...show more content... This is a sign that Juliet is impatient and desperate, because she wants to get married as soon as possible to Romeo. Also, Juliet starts the conversation about getting married, which implies that she is desperate to do so. Another time Juliet displays her impatience and desperation is when she's waiting for the Nurse to come back to hear the information on the wedding with Romeo. Juliet says, "I sent the nurse at nine o'clock. Maybe she couldn't find him. Oh, she's slow! ... Now it's noon! That's three hours since 9 o'clock!" (Shakespeare 125). This quote proves how impatient Juliet is, and it also shows how desperate she is to find out what the Nurse has to say. She's only thinking about herself and not about what's taking the Nurse so long to get home. Juliet's impatience and desperation takes away from her personality of kindness. Romeo and Juliet have similar traits. They not only express their personality, but their relationship is taken to a higher level when they speak to each other, which reveals other traits. Romeo is also desperate just like Juliet. An example is when Romeo finds Juliet in her grave, and thinks she is actually dead, when really she is only unconscious from the potion she took from the friar. Because Romeo didn't know that, he assumed that she was dead and bought poison to commit suicide to be with his wife. He says, "Come, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In this essay I will examine the role that Friar Lawrence plays in Romeo and Juliet. The play of Romeo and Juliet was written during 1594 – 1596 but was set 100 years earlier. It is a tragic love story which was based on a poem called, 'The Tragicall Hystory of Romeus and Juliet' (1562). Although there is a big time gap from when it was written and now, it doesn't affect the way we see the story today. Things that happen in the story still happen today. We still fall in love and some people may have experienced the same feelings that were felt in the story. In the story Romeo is an 18 year old boy who falls madly in love with Juliet, a 13 year old girl....show more content... When Romeo confessed to him that he wanted to marry Juliet, Friar Lawrence was shocked and confused. He shows how he feels by saying, "Young men's love then lies, Not truly in their hearts but in their eyes". By saying this he is showing that he is confused, he was in love with Rosaline not so long ago. He also says, "Women may fall, when there's no strength in men". I think he says this to try and convince Romeo that people fall in and out of love all the time. He might be trying to say that it won't be long until he falls in love with someone new, by trying to convince Romeo not to marry her, Romeo might then decide not to marry Juliet and Friar Lawrence would not lose any trust or respect from the two families or any other confessors. When he hears what Romeo has to say, he raises his voice and starts to talk fast as he is still shocked from Romeo's news. He doesn't stop to think about what he is saying. He does this to show Romeo that he may be making the wrong choice instead of just telling him. In the two different videos of Romeo and Juliet we watched, it gave two very different ways on we see Friar Lawrence in that particular scene.
