Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner ear that can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, trauma, or prolonged antibiotic use. It causes symptoms like vertigo, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and hearing loss. Treatment involves intravenous antibiotics, fluid replacement, and medications to suppress vertigo and nausea. Nurses monitor for dehydration, nutrition deficits due to vomiting, and anxiety related to the condition and hospitalization.

3. Definition
It is an inflammation of the inner ear.

4. ETIOLOGY
• Disorders of fascial & acoustic nerves
• Bacterial or viral in origin
• Trauma to the inner ear
• Because of prolonged antibiotic therapy

5. Risk factor
• Smoking
• Chronic alcohol
• Allergies
• Habitually fatigued
• Stress

6. TYPES
BACTERIAL
• Usually occurs as a complication of otitis media.
Causes
• The infection can enter the inner ear by penetrating the
membranes of the oval or round windows.

7. VIRAL
• It affects the hearing & balance.
CAUSES
• The most commonly identified viral causes are mumps,
rubella, rubeola & influenza, URI.

8. SIGN & SYMPTOMS
• Sudden onset of incapacitating vertigo usually with
nausea & vomiting.
• Various degree of hearing loss.
• Dizziness
• Difficulty focusing eyes
• Tinnitus.

9. TREATMENT
• Intra-venous antibiotic therapy.
• Fluid replacement.
• Administration of vestibular suppressant such as
meclisine & antiemetic medications.

• Assessment-
History related to ear infection, hearing loss
Physical examination of ear
• Nursing diagnosis
Hyperthermia related to infection
Imbalance nutritional status less than body
requirement related to vomiting
Anxiety related to disease prognosis and
hospitalization
