Reflecting on our answers to these questions:
What are your first thoughts?
● The after effects or impact of sexual violence is not always seen
● This can also make us be more distant from it, as if we don't play a role
● how the media has a heavy impact on what we think about things, but
especially how sexual violence and survivors are handled. Not everyone
gets justice
● Several movies I have seen involve sexual violence in the miliary setting
● The way women are portrait. Usually implies is their fault
● Sexual violence is not talked about and survivors are silenced
23. #Movies4MentalHealth
What did you think?
How did you feel?
● I could feel the stress her and her friends were experiencing because
she’s struggling to talk but they want to help her, its very difficult to do
● Distraught
● She wasn’t ready to talk about it. I hope she was able to talk to
someone eventually and get the help she needed.
● Courage it took to reach out for help
24. How might stigma impact
survivors of sexual violence?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● It keeps them from speaking out
● Revictimization
● Fear of reaching out due to victim shaming/blaming
● Don't want to be judged
● It makes them believe that somehow what happens was their fault
● Facing it alone
● It could harm the recovery process by alienating them
● It makes them feel ashamed, like Mal, often isolate themselves and
disassociate/withdraw from society, alone
