Child Abuse
What is Child Abuse
- Child Abuse is when a parent or caregiver fails to act or through action causes injury, death, emotional
harm or risk of serious harm to a child
- There are many different forms of child maltreatment which include,
● Neglect
● Physical Abuse
● Sexual Abuse
● Exploitation
● Emotional Abuse
Child Abuse: Neglect
- Child Neglect is when a parent or caregiver does not give the care, supervision, affection and support
needed for a child’s health, safety, and well being
- Child Neglect includes:
● Physical Neglect and Inadequate Supervision
● Emotional Neglect
● Medical Neglect
● Educational Neglect
- Signs of Neglect from a parent or caregiver would include showing no signs of affection towards the
child
- Signs of Neglect in a child would include hygiene problems, clothing not fitting or being unwashed, low
Child Abuse: Physical
- Physical abuse towards a child is when a parent or caregiver causes any non-accidental physical injury
to a child
- The signs of a child experiencing physical abuse are very noticeable
● Bruising
● Cuts, Scrapes
● Broken bones
● Emotional and/or Psychological harm
● Internal injuries or Brain Damage
● Death
Child Abuse: Emotional
- Emotional child abuse is when a parent or caregiver harms a child’s mental and/or social development,
or constantly causes emotional harm
- Emotional abuse towards a child can include ignoring or rejecting the child, telling the child that they
are not good enough
- Using harmful, curse words towards the child in the way the parent/ caregiver talks to them or calling
them names
- Emotional abuse in a parent would include constant yelling and making the child feel worthless,
stormy relationships with other adults, and poor anger management or emotional self regulation
- Emotional abuse in a child would include delays in development, health problems, bed/pant wetting,
speech disorders, extreme emotions, anxieties
Child Abuse: Sexual
- Sexual abuse occurs when when an adult uses a child for sexual purposes or involves a child in sexual
acts
- It also includes when a child who is more powerful and older uses another child for sexual gratification
or excitement
- Sexual abuse is a type of abuse that includes fondling, oral sex, penetration, or child pornography and
prostitution
- Sexual abuse in a parent includes parent relying on child for emotional support, jealous/possessive
parent, and an unstable adult presence
- Sexual abuse in a child includes difficulty in sitting and walking, or bowel problems, bleeding, bruising,
swelling and pain, frequent urinary tract infections or yeast infections
Why is Child Abuse a Problem?
- Child abuse has many different factors and types
- No matter what the type of abuse that a child may be experiencing, it will always have a negative
impact upon the child
- Child abuse is a problem 100% of the time because children are being made to feel like they are
worthless, these children are being put through pain day by day
- Children are usually being abused by adults, this is yet another large problem because children
depend on adults to love, care for them, and protect them from danger, instead, these abusers are
doing the absolute opposite
Who is Affected by Child Abuse
- When child abuse occurs almost everyone involved in the child’s life is affected, including the abuser
themselves
- The child is the number one person affected, and the abuse being done hurts the child the most
- Being a family member of the abused child is hard as well
- Knowing your child, or a child you know is being abused whether physically, emotionally, or sexually is
never a good feeling
- Child abuse affects a child in the most disturbing and hurtful ways, and ruins the remaining life the
child will live
Stand Up to Child Abuse
- Helping a child escape child abuse will always begin with standing up, and speaking out
- When you feel a child is being abused in any way, it always the best idea to speak up, and not be afraid
to tell someone
- Being safe is better than being sorry
- Child abuse normally occurs behind the walls of the abusers own home, this makes it a struggle to
realize child abuse when it is happening
- If a child and/or parent acts unusual it is always the best idea to tell someone
- If a child knows they are being abused they should never be afraid to save themselves by telling
another person
- Teachers, friends, family, counsellors, are always good go to sources
- No matter what the abuser may tell the child, like phrases such as
“ if you tell anyone ill hurt you” or “this is our little secret”
Should never stop a child from telling someone who can help
Conflict Theory
- I would consider child abuse to be a conflict theory
- Conflict theory involves an individual with more power over another person, using that power to
exploit groups with less power
- This particular theory reminds me of a parent/caregiver having power over a younger, innocent child
and taking advantage of them by abusing them in harmful ways

  • 20. Why is Child Abuse a Problem? - Child abuse has many different factors and types - No matter what the type of abuse that a child may be experiencing, it will always have a negative impact upon the child - Child abuse is a problem 100% of the time because children are being made to feel like they are worthless, these children are being put through pain day by day - Children are usually being abused by adults, this is yet another large problem because children depend on adults to love, care for them, and protect them from danger, instead, these abusers are doing the absolute opposite

Who is Affected by Child Abuse - When child abuse occurs almost everyone involved in the child’s life is affected, including the abuser themselves - The child is the number one person affected, and the abuse being done hurts the child the most - Being a family member of the abused child is hard as well - Knowing your child, or a child you know is being abused whether physically, emotionally, or sexually is never a good feeling - Child abuse affects a child in the most disturbing and hurtful ways, and ruins the remaining life the child will live
  • 23. Stand Up to Child Abuse - Helping a child escape child abuse will always begin with standing up, and speaking out - When you feel a child is being abused in any way, it always the best idea to speak up, and not be afraid to tell someone - Being safe is better than being sorry - Child abuse normally occurs behind the walls of the abusers own home, this makes it a struggle to realize child abuse when it is happening - If a child and/or parent acts unusual it is always the best idea to tell someone
  • 24. - If a child knows they are being abused they should never be afraid to save themselves by telling another person - Teachers, friends, family, counsellors, are always good go to sources - No matter what the abuser may tell the child, like phrases such as “ if you tell anyone ill hurt you” or “this is our little secret” Should never stop a child from telling someone who can help
  • 25. Conflict Theory - I would consider child abuse to be a conflict theory - Conflict theory involves an individual with more power over another person, using that power to exploit groups with less power - This particular theory reminds me of a parent/caregiver having power over a younger, innocent child and taking advantage of them by abusing them in harmful ways
