This presentation will discuss the historical and contemporary significance of the Philippine jeepney, will illustrate several examples, and will outline the expectations of the culminating task. As they will gather from the presentation, the jeepney is an example of the combination of various of cultural influences to create something new, purposeful, and a creative expression. 11. The Philippine jeepney is a symbolic representation of blended cultures. For Filipinos
and other immigrants in Canada, it can be considered a symbol of inclusivity and the
fluidity of national identity.
This is the basis of the jeepney: it was a military vehicle used by Americans in World War ll when the American occupied the Philippines. When American troops left the country, hundreds of surplus jeeps were sold or given to Filipinos. The jeeps were stripped down and altered locally.

Rinse and dry a 1L milk carton. Open up the top.
Paint exterior with acrylic paint. It adheres well to the waxy coating.
Cut top flat open up to the crease. Then, cut along the crease on the left and right sides to halfway down each side.
Connect the left and right sides by creasing the halfway mark and taping together.
5. The top flap will make the desination sign of the jeepney.
6. Fold the top flap in half, trim, and use hot glue with teacher supervision to glue folded halves together.
7. Use a Sharpie marker to draw out windows on one side of the jeepney. Carefully cut out.
8. Using the cut pieces as templates, trace the windows on other side and then carefully cut out.
9. Draw the back entrance and the rear windows. Try poking a whole through the carton and then cutting. Teacher assistance may be needed.
10. Start adding images and objects, such as old computer cables to your jeepney. See assignment expectations.
11. To add images inside the jeepney, use a small piece of bristol board or paper folded into an “L”. Glue to the back for of your image and then to the interior to make
12. Using images, indicate your future destination and the route you will take to get there.
13. Also include symbols of your sense of identity (national, ethnoracial, cultural, religious, gender, etc.)
14. Select a role model from your community (ethnocultural, local, etc.) that you admire. Include a brief bio.
15. You may add personal photos or drawings that show how you and your family came to be in Canada.
16. Indicate major contributions of your community to Canadian society and identity though text and image.
17. Using an old comb, you can make the jeepney’s grill. Attach with hot glue with teacher supervision.

18. For the wheels, you may use 4 matching lids of bottles or wheels from an old toy. Hot glue with teacher supervision.
19. Inspired by real jeepneys, add more details, such as headlights, licence plates, handle bars, steering wheel, and other embellishments.
20. Once your jeepney is complete, write a 3/4 to a page artist statement in response to the expectations of the assignment.
