The document summarizes the filmmaking experience and projects of Owen Nettle. It describes how he learned about story structure and teamwork through his first short film. It also discusses how he took on sound design and Foley artist roles for another project to gain experience. His final major college project was a period short film about Psycho where he served as writer, director, producer, and editor. During the pandemic, he enjoyed recreating famous movie posters. The document also provides links to his filmmaking blog and YouTube channel containing his work.
2. • The idea generation process for Spoiler Warning went through quite a few
formats like mind-maps and visualising what the story structure would look
like. What this did was introduce me to new ways in which I could construct
a story I wanted to convey through film such as the story circle below.
Idea Generation
3. For my first ever short film, I asked one
person to assist me with the
camerawork and another with the
sound while I wrote, directed and
edited. I was able to learn from this
experience about how crucial
communication and teamwork is on a
project as small as a no-budget feature.
To challenge myself even further
while working on my final major
project for my college course, I
decided to record sound effects for
my short film practically in the role
of a Foley artist in order to gain a
wider look at all of the possible
responsibilities that would
potentially arise in the production of
a film. Here, I am recording a ‘boom’
sound using a garage door.

4. Final Major College Project

For my final major project on
my Creative Media course, I
decided on developing a period
short film while taking on the
roles of writer, director,
producer and editor. The
project was heavily influenced
by the engrossing topic of
Psycho’s release in order to
express my displeasure
towards film twists being
ruined for other people. It was
a piece of work that earned me
a distinction grade.

5. While I was forced to work on my college projects from home in the first year, I
came across a creative competition that involved producing a humorous replica
of a famous piece of art or poster. I chose the latter and enjoyed re-creating Die
Hard so much that I did the same for Mission Impossible 4.
Graphics
6. Two photobashes for the TV show I was tasked with coming up with for my
college course which concern the show’s antagonist. While I think the image
on the right could have been a lot better, I still felt as though I picked up skills
in digital effects while significantly challenging myself with the result having
mistakes I have avoided making again since then.
Character and Web-design
7. In my free time, I recently started drawing replicas of film
stills and F1-related images because I found it quite soothing
and a nice way to relax outside of college work and my part-
time job.

8. Studio photography
Still life photography of my Big Ben money box
which I felt would be an intriguing object to
photograph due to how precious it is as well as
how effectively delicate it looks. It was a
brilliant subject to use while experimenting with
different positioning of studio lights. Exploring
the functions of Adobe Lightroom was also an
eye-opener as to how digital artists enhance
their work.
My self-portrait that I wanted to
communicate my appreciation for film
through by it being in black and white and
done through developing proper film.
9. • Ever since my final GCSE year, I
have been running my own
blog named Popcorn Media
where I have been publishing
articles that communicate my
passionate interest in film with
thumbnail images I designed
myself like the Spider-Man one
to the left. It was the outcome
of a recent decision I made to
put the graphical skills I had
picked up into practice during
my gap year.
