A2 media evaluation

 1. 1. A2 Media Evaluation By Jake Hobday
 2. 2. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Trailer:

Mise-en-scene : Isolated derelict locations that you would expect from a horror film, I chose a dark wood area as it appeared quite gloomy and gave a very eerie atmosphere.

The outfits that the characters you see wear suit there roles as the villainous character is in all black and you never see their identity so it is left to the imagination of the audience. The victim is dressed in everyday clothes to create as normal and life like character as possible that appears very innocent and alone.

The lighting is very dim and gloomy to help set the tone of the film and it adds atmosphere and reinforces the unknown as no one likes being alone especially in the dark because it allows the imagination to wonder and think of typically bad things.

 3. 3. 1. Continued…

Music and sound - Again as I have mentioned before atmosphere is the main outcome of adding music, it adds a eeriness and added a lot of suspense to my scenes.

Sounds like the scream that are directly from the scripting of the trailer give a introduction to the characters within the film.

Heavy breathing adds a lot of tension and suspense during the chase scene as you don’t know whether the victim is caught.

Characters -Villain – the villain is left unknown to the imagination of the audience, allowing them to put together their own image of what they may look like.

Victim, the victim is the only character seen in my clip to try to get as much of her innocence across as possible.

 4. 4. 1. Continued…

Camerawork and editing - The use of crosscutting as suspense as key pieces of the story are left out leaving it for the audience to wonder what has happened.

Pov shots from the villain so you can get a view of what they are doing and seeing from their perspective and how they go unseen in some cases.

Chase scenes- hand held to again see what going on in the story from the characters point of view to help the audience understand what they are doing and feeling .

Themes - Good vs. evil and how good always triumphs but mine goes again conventions and doesn’t follow this, I chose to do this to add a unique difference to my film making it stand out from the rest.

 5. 5. 1. Continued…

Magazine : I focused on using the majority of the conventions that I found in my research into magazines that focus on or feature films.

Masthead

Price

I ssue number

P uff

D ate

M ain image

W ebsite

P ull quotes

 9. 9.

During the research and planning of my media products it was obvious that there need to be a consistent house style that featured throughout every piece of my work so it was clear that they are all related and of the same nature.

Throughout the task there is duality as they all feature the same characters, same colour scheme, and location, colours black conveys the sense of the unknown and mystery, the red conveys blood

Throughout my work I tried to incorporate the use of some of the main conventions such as colours like blacks and reds that are instantly associated with horror and this type of genre, keeping this consistent throughout each of my media tasks so that my target audience or anyone that saw it would instantly recognise it and associate each of the task with one another.

2. How effective the combination of your main product and your ancillary tasks?
 10. 10. 2.Continued… C:UsersHobdayDocumentsJakes School WorkIn The Shadows Poster.png C:UsersHobdayDocumentsJakes School WorkIn The Shadows magazine.png Above are my ancillary tasks and stills from my trailer. You can see that each of the tasks echo one another as they feature the same colours and style of image and text so it is consistently the same. The similarities between each task create the recognisable house style that people and associate with.
 11. 11. 3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

The main way for me to gain audience feedback was to upload my trailer to YouTube as soon as it was finished so that as many people as possible could view it and give feedback on how the trailer could have been improved and what they liked about it by a board audience of people.

To gain further feedback I set up a focus group of friends and family of different ages to sit and watch my trailer, so they I could gain feedback from them about what they liked and thought needed to be improved. After watching the trailer I asked them to write down two positive and two negitive features, some examples are shown below.

Positive: “ The music used throughout was excellent, it set the tone for the trailer and the film as soon as it started”

“ The various types of camera shots used were interesting and kept you interested as they kept changing throughout the trailer.

 12. 12. 3. Continued…

Negative: “ The trailer was a bit too long, it was very good, but I began to lose some interest towards the end due to its length”

“The editing of the trailer could have been sped up to add more tension and atmosphere, other than that it was great”

From the feedback that I have received in various ways I have learnt that the length of my trailer could have been reduced and the pace of the editing increased to add more tension and atmosphere, if I had looked at the questionnaire given out in my research stage I may have not had these issues as they were pointed out to be key areas and features of a trailer. In my own opinion time management was one of the main issues as If the work ahsd been produced faster the feedback would have been received sooner and alterations could have been made from this to improve my final trailer and ancillary tasks.

 13. 13. 4. How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation of your media products?

Construction :

Phone – During the construction of my main and ancillary tasks I used my phone to take photos whilst out was out looking at various locations that could be used for the film or for the photos that would be used in the two ancillary tasks.

Camera – The use of the camera was very similar to the phone as I used it to go out and take more final images of what locations I would use as the image quality was far better than that of my phone, also it allowed me to take some test clips of filming to see if there were and noise that could be heard and effect my filing such as traffic or wind noise.

Tripod/Stands/Mounts – The use of tripods, stands and mounts allowed the footage and photos I took to have a steady professional consistent look which gave my overall finished products and high quality final look.

P ower Director - I used power director to produce my trailer as it was very simple to use and allowed me to use both video and audio films that could be edited and modified with and gave me the option to use effects and transitions to make my trailer look professional when finished.

 14. 14. 4. Continued…

YouTube – I used YouTube to upload different cuts of my trailer as it was very quick and simple to use, due to the vast number of people that use it every day I thought it would be the best way fro my trailer to be view and to gain feedback from people who watched it.

Planning :

Phone - Having the photos allowed me to create a storyboard to mock up what the key pieces of my trailer would be and also allowed me to think about the layout of the ancillary task and how much of the focus would be on the final image.

Wix – I used Wix to display all of my work including my planning as it could be easily viewed by anyone online and was a fully customizable website programme so it could be made to suit the theme of my whole project of horror to create overall duality.

Evaluation –

Phone – I used my phone during the evaluation to take voice notes about my main and ancillary task that could be added over my evaluation to show that I can use a mixture of medias.

 15. 15. 4. Continued…

Microsoft Power Point – I used Microsoft Power point as it is very simple and easy to use, it was also compatible with Wix so it could easily be uploaded to my site, it gave me the option to use texts and features that I ha used of other Microsoft software's that I had used when creating my ancillary tasks.
