When a war occurs, it takes years for the society or societies involved to return to a more normal, calm state. In the case of the American Civil War,
many aspects of the country were disrupted after the war ended in 1865. Relations were strained, land had been destroyed, families torn apart, and
much more. The economy struggled, and many Southerners did not want to accept a loss. The death count for the American Civil War was also an
amazing number, and made a large dent into families, businesses, and towns across the nation.

Money was a great issue, as well as finding another place to build. The emotional stress of losing a home or business took a gigantic toll on survivors of
the war too. The destruction left behind by the war overwhelmed many people; Northerners, Southerners, and blacks alike.
Economically, the huge cost of the war; which covered weapons, ammunition, clothes, food, and medical supplies, took a very large toll on the
nations budget. The South was worse of then the North, but both sides would struggle for years due to the great loss. Millions of dollars were
spent on these supplies, and the money came from many different places. For example, the South made some of their own paper money, while also
borrowing from other countries. On top of the major expenses of the war as it had pressed on, the loss of businesses and important city buildings
would cost a large amount of money for the people to replace; money that sometimes could not be raised for years to come after the end of the war.
With thousands of deaths on either side throughout the war, America's population had been hit enormously. Besides the number count, the priceless

The American Civil War was arguably the most important war in the history of the country. The War of Independence may have allowed American to
become its' own country, but the Civil War resulted in something even more important than that, the end of slavery in the southern states. All of the

In 1776, the Civil War began. Most believe war started over the moral issue of slavery, which was a huge conflict in society but in fact it started over
the economic standpoint of slavery and political control. A key issue though, was states rights. The South wanted authority over the federal government
so they could abolish federal laws that they didn't support. Territorial expansion was another factor in the breakout of the Civil War. The South wanted
slavery in the Western territories while the North was committed to being against slavery. While this was going on, a republican party was forming
with members who were strongly against westward expansion of slavery, basically taking the North's side. In 1860 when Abraham Lincoln took office,
it was made clear to the South that slavery was not going to expand westward. Therefore, the seven states in the South seceded from the Union forming
the Confederate States of America, leading to the start of the Civil War. April 12th, 1861 a battle broke out at Fort
A lasting effect of the war was the emancipation of the slaves. It was inevitable that the North was going to win for a number of reasons. To start
off, the North had a demographic advantage over the South. Since there were more civilians in the North than there were in the South, their army
was always larger. The Confederacy didn't even have a great Navy. Without a strong Navy, the Confederacy would never be able to really hurt the
Union by disrupting it's economy and blockading its ports. Also, most of the battles took place on Northern territories so they knew the land. In 1862,
the North had captured New Orleans as well. This is important because New Orleans was the major port for the Confederacy. So to capture it, meant
that the South's economy was going to collapse soon

The United States Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, represented a time of major change around the world. This civil war that absorbed our
nation during the mid 1860s not only fought for the rights of African Americans in the United States but for the rights and respects ofAfrican Americans
around the globe. These times of fighting altered the lives of women living in a strongly patriarchal society by giving females a chance to live
independently and successfully while their husbands were at war. American males came back from battle to find a stronger, liberated nation that was

It can be said that the roots of the feminist movement began in 1861 with the start of this brutal war.
Quoting Dr. William Carrigan, Professor of History at Rowan University, "When men were away fighting in the Civil War, women managed the farms
and took on the duties that their husbands once had. Women became individuals during the war" (Carrigan, personal interview). Women did change
their lives dramatically from 1861 to 1865, assuming many chores and responsibilities that many thought females could not handle (Carrigan, personal
interview). The wives of the plantation owners assumed many responsibilities and single–
Clarkson 3 handedly ran the South for four long years. Douglas Grunn, member of the 33rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Reenactment Group, said in
a recent interview that women in the North also played a key role in the results of the Civil War.
Many women would sew flags, make bullets, act as field nurses, and administer bandages to aid their husbands and soldiers (Grunn, personal
interview). Everyday field nurses would impact the war by saving the lives of soldiers who needed serious and quick medical care. The U.S. Civil
War would have resulted differently if it weren't for the many females who decided to put their efforts into the war.
Even though it was considered wrong and illegal, over 400 women fought during the Civil War
