3. INTRODUCTION
๏ข African agriculture is largely in the hands of
smallholder and resource constraint farmers
๏ข The economy is agriculture-based (Work Bank,
2008)
๏ข Climate change is โchangingโ the face of
agriculture in Africa
๏ข Increasing weather and climate variability are
impacting landscape and livelihoods in Africa

4. AGRICULTURE IN GHANA
๏ข Ghana has shown some levels of improvement
(Agric GDP & achievements of some MDGs
targets), but there are still challenges in the area
of climate resilient or sustainable agricultural
development
๏ข Building networks and interconnections are
precursors for promoting climate resilient and
sustainable agriculture in Ghana

5. CLIMATE RESILIENT AGRICULTURE
๏ข Agriculture that reduces poverty and hunger in the
face of climate change, improving the resources it
depends on for future generations (ChristianAid,
2015).
๏ข It is based on the identification of the major risks and
challenges local communities face, and/or are likely to
face in the near future, and on the design and
implementation of site-specific adaptation strategies
aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and increasing the
resilience of the smallholder production systems
(ActionAid, 2017)

6. CLIMATE RESILIENT AGRICULTURE
๏ข It creates agricultural growth out of knowledge
and innovation, while simultaneously building
the capacity of smallholder farmers to counter
environmental degradation and climate change
(Montpellier Report, 2012)
๏ข It is critical for promoting sustainable
development in agriculture & food, water and
energy in Ghana, now and in the future.

7. CLIMATE RESILIENT AGRICULTURE, GROWTH
& SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
๏ข Climate resilient agriculture is consistent with
climate-smart agriculture (IFAD, 2016; Olayide
et al., 2016) and sustainable agriculture (Action
Aid, 2017)
๏ข Therefore, climate resilient agriculture promotes
economic growth and sustainable development
๏ข BUT climate resilient agriculture does not work
in isolation, it requires interconnections of
stakeholders (government, farmers and non-state
actors)

10. METHODOLOGY
๏ข Research Question:
What are the climate
resilient agricultural
innovations/technologies or
initiatives , and who are
the actors in providing
these
innovations/technologies or
initiatives
๏ข Methods: Field survey;
key informant interviews;
focus group discussions;
documentary

๏ข Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) on

14. CONCLUSION
๏ข Climate resilient agriculture is one that is able
to withstand or recover from stresses or shocks.
It is enhanced by interconnections of people and
markets to engender economic growth and
sustainable development
๏ข Climate resilient agriculture depends on science,
innovation & technology (SIT)
๏ข There are emerging initiatives of climate
resilient agricultural practices in Ghana

15. RECOMMENDATIONS
๏ข Appropriate intensification and technology required
for improving labour, savings and involving less
capital investment
๏ข Resilient agriculture depends on science, innovation &
technology (SIT) thus requires partnerships for
sustainable development
๏ข Attention should be paid to key spaces (financial,
political, institutional, cultural & partnership) for
scaling up
