SMEs account for 99% of all businesses (left figure)
prominent role in the green economy (middle figure)
SMEs play a significant role in three steps of the green economy (right figure):- Innovation- Commercialization- Energy& resource efficiency
SMEs need access to Finance to contribute to the green economy
Access to Finance is second biggest problem for SMEs (behind finding customers)
Across Europe, the average interest rate for credit lines or bank overdrafts is roughly 3% for large companies compared to nearly 8% for micro enterprises (left figure)

The results are similar when looking at the time horizon of lending to domestic enterprises in Germany: 47% of commercial bank’ domestic enterprise lending long-term versus 68%-73% for savings banks, Landesbanken, and credit cooperatives.
