This document establishes procedures for quarantining and following up on biting dogs under four months of age. It allows such puppies to be quarantined at home for 10 days following a bite. Animal control officers will inspect the home on the first day and fifth day of quarantine. After the 10 day period, the officer can release the puppy if it is deemed healthy. The policy aims to ensure puppies are vaccinated against rabies by the time they reach four months of age.

I. PURPOSE
To establish a procedure for allowing the owners of dogs under four (4) months of age, to
be quarantined at home following a bite and follow-up to ensure such dogs(s) are
vaccinated against rabies when reaching four (4) months of age.
II. POLICY
OC Animal Care will quarantine puppies under four months (4) of age that are not under
a government quarantine that have inflicted bite(s) at the owner’s residence.
III. SCOPE
Applicable to all Field Services personnel involved in enforcing home quarantines and to
Clerical personnel responsible for rabies vaccination follow-up.

VII. PROCEDURE
A. After a bite/scratch report is received, the Rabies Control Personnel or Animal
Control Officer (ACO) initiates the Rabies Control Investigation Report (Animal
Bite/Scratch Report).
1. The ACO shall initiate a “Vac Cert” in the Tag/Link Window.

routine follow up information for the unvaccinated puppies, i.e., those

adopted from the Shelter, per Procedure 500.52, to ensure said puppy is
vaccinated and licensed.
B. The animal shall be quarantined at the owner's residence for ten (10) days from
the date of the bite due to age.
C. An ACO shall inspect said residence on the first quarantine day to ensure the
security of the quarantined area and that the dog’s owner(s) are aware of State
quarantine requirements.
D. A quarantine visit is performed by the ACO on the fifth day of the quarantine.
E. Following the ten (10) day home quarantine, the ACO shall release the puppy
from quarantine after observing the animal as healthy.
