6. Air Pollution
Air is very essential in every living being’s life.
What is air pollution?
The presence of contaminants in the atmosphere which pollutes the air and which can also be injurious to health is known
as Air Pollution.
How Why
A cloud of smoke from the exhaust of a
vehicle
Increasing traffic
Smoke from a factory chimney Growing cities
Eruption of a volcano Rapid economic development
Cigarette smoke Industrialization
Burning leaves Apathetic people
7. Types of Air Pollutants
Natural
Contaminants:
Eg: Pollen, Products
of volcanic activity,
etc.
Aerosols: Releases
small sized pollutants
about 2.5 microns.
Vapours & Noxious
gases: Chemically
react to form smog
and acid rain,
Eg: Nitrogen oxides,
carbon Monoxide ,etc
Air
Pollutants
8. Smog And Acid Rain
Smog: Fog mixed with dust and smoke.
Formed by chemical reactions between automobile exhaust and pollutants.
Occurs when air close to the Earth is cooler than the air above it.
Acid Rain: occurs when pollutants like sulphuric acid combines with droplets of
water in the air.
Defects:
Damages vegetation
Pollutes the soil
Making the land unfit for cultivation
Endangering aquatic life.
9. Effects of Air Pollution
• Health problems
• Damage to the environment
• Damage to property
• Thinning of the protective
ozone layer of the atmosphere
which is leading to climate changes
11. WATER POLLUTION
What is water pollution?
• Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies. This form of
environmental degradation occurs when pollutants like
oil, phosphates, bacteria, fungi are directly or indirectly discharged
into water bodies without adequate treatment to
remove harmful compounds.
12. Effects of water pollution
• Death of aquatic (water) animals
• Diseases
Eventually, human beings are affected by this process as well. People
can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating seafood that has been
poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always an outbreak of cholera
and other water borne diseases caused due unsafe potable water.
• Devastating to people and animals, fish, and birds.
• Unsuitable for drinking, recreation, agriculture, and industry.
• Destroys water life.
16. • Improper disposal of garbage.
• Excess usage of pesticides.
• Acid rains
• Industrial wastes Radioactive
substances Released into the soil
• Dumping of sewage and domestic
wastes.
17. Types of waste
• Household waste
• Industrial waste
• Biomedical or hospital
waste
Why
• Population increases
• Increased plastics products
• Changes in lifestyle
• Landfills not well equipped
to protect against
contamination
