2. Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of
motion, observable as the
movement of an object or
subatomic particle. Every moving
object and particle have kinetic
energy. A person walking, a
soaring baseball, a crumb falling
from a table and a charged
particle in an electric field are all
examples of kinetic energy at
work.
5. 2. A bowling ball is rolling down a
ramp at a constant velocity of
2.5m/s and has a kinetic energy
equal to 18.8J. What is the mass
of a bowling ball?
6. 3. A locomotive has a mass of
190,000 kg and has 2,500,000 J of
Kinetic energy, calculate the
velocity of the locomotive.
7. Potential Energy
Potential energy is energy that
is stored – or conserved - in an
object or substance.
This stored energy is based on the
position, arrangement or state of
the object or substance. You can
think of it as energy that has the
'potential' to do work.
13. Assessment
1. what is Potential Energy?
2. what is Kinetic Energy?
Problem Solving
1. Calculate the kinetic energy of 500 kg race car travelling 40m/s
down the racetrack.
2. Calculate the gravitational potential energy in a 400 kg boulder
that rests on a cliff 140 meters high.
