Revisit site issues
“Disconnection”
Disconnection between users
Despite the diversity of users, there is lack of connection &
interaction between users at site. Without connection & interaction,
it is harder to promote different traditional culture at site, thus
people wouldnt understant what does the culture represent.
Cause
- Shift of capital , people / families moved out for better
opportunity
- The influx of foreign workers create social issues and make
more local shift out.
- Rapid development changed the social & economical
structure.
- The traditional business / artisans that offer daily necessities
closed down when they couldn't sustain themselves.
Disconnection between users to site
Pasar seni is one of the famous travel hotspot at site but it doesnt
have any proper and designated public realm, and people often use it
as transition place, there is no emotional attachment for users to site.
Cause
- Influx of foreign workers & shop, homogenizing the area.
- Selling repetitive & superficial product, make people lose its
interest on pasar seni.
- Homeless take over when there are lesser activities occur at
night, people dont dare to visit the site
.
How to deal with issues ?
“Reconnection”
Users to users connection
Offer chances and opportunity in order to revive the cultural identity
and community at site.
Provide platform for local artist, craftsman, performers, site users and
tourist not only to perform, earn a living, most importantly is to promote
their culture.
Activate public realm and provide activities that encourage user to
connect with each other, exchange their cultural experience.
A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.
Mahatma Gandhi
Users to site connection
Recreate the vibe of pasar seni, bring different people together and
turn the site into a lively place.
Turn the site into public realm, cater the needs of users, provide
cultural related program to educate users about the local traditional
culture.
Once users appreciate the cultural value, their perception towards
their own culture and the site will be different.
Art & Music Cultural Park
The purpose of the cultural experience center is to provide platform and opportunity for artist to communicate with each other, and
educate public about our culture. Let public understand the background and making process of different art & music from different
culture, only then people will understand the importance of culture when they are able to “see” and “experience” it.
Another main goal is to deal with the lack of public space. Create public realm that provide shades, communal space for people/artist to
gather & stay in order to create emotional attachment to site.
Based on this I have decided to develop art & music as the main feature of the cultural experience centre, the existing cultural related
activities at site mostly are art & craft, then comes to music & instrument which located in pasar seni and Annexe gallery. This provide
ample manpower and resources to support the cultural center.
The art & music center can provide space and platform for artist to showcase their talent, communicate with artist and promote their
culture through their work. For art & craft workshop, people don’t have to be an expert to learn, and the requirement threshold is low for
public. Music related workshop provide spaces for musicians to practice, music recording session and most importantly for public to
experience the beauty in music.
Japanese music sharing session in pasar seni, 2019.

Architectural design concept
The overall design language promote openness and public space to enhance the connection & interaction between people and artist, public
realm provide space and shades to cater needs of users, green park activate the site throughout the year, provide an escape for citizen from
urban life, which will attract more users to site.
Precedent study 1
Introduction
City park soundscape aim to be an important center of music and a welcoming destination for budapest inhabitants and visitor in hungary
The intent of the project is to be more than just a museum, as its central position will identify it as both a cultural and public space.
Music lovers and passersby will be able to meet and enjoy the facility as a hub for art, relaxation, and creation from the inside-out.
‘city park soundscape’ by
group8asia
The city park blend in with the site context, lowkey and humble.
Architectural concept
-The design influenced by its immediate surroundings, the hungarian monument is a poetic interpretation of the music box.
-The skyline of the complex has been pitched at a lower scale than its context in order to create a dialogue with and signify respect for the
park’s other iconic buildings
-Open in every direction, the massing is divided to reinforce its central position in the landscape, thus attracting visitors and bringing flexibility
to various activities.
This my one of my favourite precedent study, it shows how a music center can merge with public realm, provide flexible public space
for different activities, and the connection to the surrounding context. The interior public ring provide intimate public space and
connection to different part of the building.
Scheme 1
The key concept of this scheme is to make the central courtyard space
as anchor point with the circulation space revolve around it, create
multiple entrances for users from different direction, emphasize
vertical spatial hierarchy and blur the boundary of ground floor.
This concept has set the tone of my upcoming design.
Questions/ problems
-Too many entrances
-Building blocks blocking all three sides
-didn’t manage to arrange spaces
Scheme 1
Site study sketch
-User intensity
-Type of users
-Entrance possibility
-Rough spatial arrangement for next tutorial
-sketch of desire public space
Precedent study 2
Introduction
SOZAWE (welfare department and work agency) by NL architects is
located in the city of groningen; consisting of office spaces, a large
interior public space and 215 parking spaces.
in their design NL aimed to construct a building which was open,
inviting and sustainable. a crucial part of the program was the
‘marketplace’ or ‘square’ to allow interaction between the
department and its customers.
‘SOZAWE’ by NL architects
the stepped volume typology for the office building creates numerous cross relations
between floors. in total there are 9 office floors. each floor has access to an outdoor
space that will feature trees and a view over the city.
This is the inspiration of my scheme 2,
Architects make the building more welcoming by
elevation the floors, turn the void beneath it to
communal space to create connection between
users.
establish vertical spatial hierarchy and visual
permeability/ interest, create a sustainable
environment via outdoor greenery space on every
floor, to provide shades for indoor spaces.
.
Scheme 2 For scheme 2, Provide a permeable space (shaded
entrance hall) at entrance facing the kasturi walk as the
main welcoming space. Another two entrance come from
riverside walk and Jln Tan Tun Cheng Lock.
Central courtyard will be the main anchor point and there
will be pocket space revolve around it, enhance the spatial
relationship.
Ground floor act as public space for public activities,
workshop starts at first floor.
Ground Floor First Floor
Second Floor
Third Floor
From first floor onwards will be workshop and
gallery spaces, position of different floors provide
visual interest and more view towards interior
activities and exterior scene.
Question
- Not interactive enough for users from first floor
onwards
- Vertical connection too monotonous
- All the functions trap within the form, need to be
more open
Perspective
Scheme 2B
s
Scheme 2B is the update version of scheme 2, at this stage i trying to add
more public space to enhance users connection, added vehicle access, and
amend the number of entrances for better spatial arrangement.
Question
- Transition space isn’t nice enough (too boring)
- Need to adjust ground floor space for better spatial relationship
- Entrances cut the site into 3, create awkward fragments.
1
2
Vehicle access
1. Bomba, services, basement exit
2. Main pick up/ drop off, taxi parking,
entrance to basement
Provide better walkability by changing the
material of road.
Feedback from tutor
First floor and second floor need more public space and interesting transition space.
Play with height and views.
First floor : for art & craft workshop / gallery
Second floor : for music workshop / theatre

Cause - Shift of capital , people / families moved out for better opportunity - The influx of foreign workers create social issues and make more local shift out. - Rapid development changed the social & economical structure. - The traditional business / artisans that offer daily necessities closed down when they couldn't sustain themselves. Disconnection between users to site Pasar seni is one of the famous travel hotspot at site but it doesnt have any proper and designated public realm, and people often use it as transition place, there is no emotional attachment for users to site. Cause - Influx of foreign workers & shop, homogenizing the area. - Selling repetitive & superficial product, make people lose its interest on pasar seni. - Homeless take over when there are lesser activities occur at night, people dont dare to visit the site .
  • 4. How to deal with issues ? “Reconnection” Users to users connection Offer chances and opportunity in order to revive the cultural identity and community at site. Provide platform for local artist, craftsman, performers, site users and tourist not only to perform, earn a living, most importantly is to promote their culture. Activate public realm and provide activities that encourage user to connect with each other, exchange their cultural experience. A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people. Mahatma Gandhi Users to site connection Recreate the vibe of pasar seni, bring different people together and turn the site into a lively place. Turn the site into public realm, cater the needs of users, provide cultural related program to educate users about the local traditional culture. Once users appreciate the cultural value, their perception towards their own culture and the site will be different.
  • 5. Art & Music Cultural Park The purpose of the cultural experience center is to provide platform and opportunity for artist to communicate with each other, and educate public about our culture. Let public understand the background and making process of different art & music from different culture, only then people will understand the importance of culture when they are able to “see” and “experience” it. Another main goal is to deal with the lack of public space. Create public realm that provide shades, communal space for people/artist to gather & stay in order to create emotional attachment to site. Based on this I have decided to develop art & music as the main feature of the cultural experience centre, the existing cultural related activities at site mostly are art & craft, then comes to music & instrument which located in pasar seni and Annexe gallery. This provide ample manpower and resources to support the cultural center. The art & music center can provide space and platform for artist to showcase their talent, communicate with artist and promote their culture through their work. For art & craft workshop, people don’t have to be an expert to learn, and the requirement threshold is low for public. Music related workshop provide spaces for musicians to practice, music recording session and most importantly for public to experience the beauty in music. Japanese music sharing session in pasar seni, 2019.

  • 10. Precedent study 1 Introduction City park soundscape aim to be an important center of music and a welcoming destination for budapest inhabitants and visitor in hungary The intent of the project is to be more than just a museum, as its central position will identify it as both a cultural and public space. Music lovers and passersby will be able to meet and enjoy the facility as a hub for art, relaxation, and creation from the inside-out. ‘city park soundscape’ by group8asia The city park blend in with the site context, lowkey and humble.
  • 11. Architectural concept -The design influenced by its immediate surroundings, the hungarian monument is a poetic interpretation of the music box. -The skyline of the complex has been pitched at a lower scale than its context in order to create a dialogue with and signify respect for the park’s other iconic buildings -Open in every direction, the massing is divided to reinforce its central position in the landscape, thus attracting visitors and bringing flexibility to various activities.
  • 12. This my one of my favourite precedent study, it shows how a music center can merge with public realm, provide flexible public space for different activities, and the connection to the surrounding context. The interior public ring provide intimate public space and connection to different part of the building.
  • 13. Scheme 1 The key concept of this scheme is to make the central courtyard space as anchor point with the circulation space revolve around it, create multiple entrances for users from different direction, emphasize vertical spatial hierarchy and blur the boundary of ground floor. This concept has set the tone of my upcoming design. Questions/ problems -Too many entrances -Building blocks blocking all three sides -didn’t manage to arrange spaces

  • 15. Precedent study 2 Introduction SOZAWE (welfare department and work agency) by NL architects is located in the city of groningen; consisting of office spaces, a large interior public space and 215 parking spaces. in their design NL aimed to construct a building which was open, inviting and sustainable. a crucial part of the program was the ‘marketplace’ or ‘square’ to allow interaction between the department and its customers. ‘SOZAWE’ by NL architects
  • 16. the stepped volume typology for the office building creates numerous cross relations between floors. in total there are 9 office floors. each floor has access to an outdoor space that will feature trees and a view over the city.
  • 17. This is the inspiration of my scheme 2, Architects make the building more welcoming by elevation the floors, turn the void beneath it to communal space to create connection between users. establish vertical spatial hierarchy and visual permeability/ interest, create a sustainable environment via outdoor greenery space on every floor, to provide shades for indoor spaces. .
  • 18. Scheme 2 For scheme 2, Provide a permeable space (shaded entrance hall) at entrance facing the kasturi walk as the main welcoming space. Another two entrance come from riverside walk and Jln Tan Tun Cheng Lock. Central courtyard will be the main anchor point and there will be pocket space revolve around it, enhance the spatial relationship. Ground floor act as public space for public activities, workshop starts at first floor. Ground Floor First Floor
  • 19. Second Floor Third Floor From first floor onwards will be workshop and gallery spaces, position of different floors provide visual interest and more view towards interior activities and exterior scene. Question - Not interactive enough for users from first floor onwards - Vertical connection too monotonous - All the functions trap within the form, need to be more open Perspective
  • 20. Scheme 2B s Scheme 2B is the update version of scheme 2, at this stage i trying to add more public space to enhance users connection, added vehicle access, and amend the number of entrances for better spatial arrangement. Question - Transition space isn’t nice enough (too boring) - Need to adjust ground floor space for better spatial relationship - Entrances cut the site into 3, create awkward fragments. 1 2 Vehicle access 1. Bomba, services, basement exit 2. Main pick up/ drop off, taxi parking, entrance to basement Provide better walkability by changing the material of road.
  • 21. Feedback from tutor First floor and second floor need more public space and interesting transition space. Play with height and views. First floor : for art & craft workshop / gallery Second floor : for music workshop / theatre
