2. Overview
Romantic art is complex. In the visual arts, alone it
contains many different strands: passionate
landscapes flooded by almost divine light which
streams down from the sky; allegorical paintings
which convey the vulnerability of humans before
the powerful forces of nature and God; and
images of heroic figures rising wounded but
victorious from a sea of political violence and
terror. Music, poetry, and fiction are similarly
complex. In this lesson you will study works of
visual art. By analyzing them you will come to
recognize what is characteristic of most of this
work, namely intense human emotions, human
vulnerability, and the vicissitudes of fate.
