BEEJAY ANYA MAKES A #STATEMENT
The Wolfpack Men’s Basketball team made a huge statement tonight in their home game against
the Jacksonville University Dolphins. Game time started at 7pm at PNC Arena in Raleigh, and
the team played a great game overall. There were many key plays and attacks on offense and
defense that set the pack far above the Jacksonville Dolphins, including BeeJay Anya’s record
breaking defensive plays.
When asked about his thoughts on Anya’s defense, Coach Gottfried stated, “We’ve had a lot of
great players here at NC State and a lot of guys that have been able to block some shots as well.
BeeJay has that nag, you know, he’s got long arms but he also has great anticipation. They kept
going right at him and he kept sending them right out of there.”
Anya, a sophomore forward standing 6’9” broke the all-time school record for most blocks in a
single game coming in at 10 blocked shots for NC State. After the game, Anya was asked how he
felt about his performance compared to last year. He replied with, “I’m more of a player that I
was last year in general. I can move better with kind of a smaller build than I was last year”. Last
year, Anya stood at 350 pounds, hindering his stamina and pace of play. This year, he has come
back stronger, faster and thinner at 285 pounds, allowing him to play harder and longer.
“BeeJay obviously had a good night. He can become a presence for us inside. I'm happy he's
beginning to step forward. We need that from him." – Coach Gottfried in regards to the
performance of Anya, showing his determination and leadership for the younger guys on the
team.
Anya’s stellar defense along with the offensive speed of Trevor Lacey with three steals and the
offensive breakout game for freshman, Caleb Martin. Martin, a 6’6” guard had 15 points for the
Pack. Lennard Freeman, a sophomore forward added a double-double with 10 points and 12
rebounds as well.
The pace of the game started out pretty quick – Jacksonville putting up 5 points in the first few
minutes. But as State pulled together and set the tone, their defense created a brick wall for the
Dolphins, leaving them scoreless for the next ten minutes. This led to a sloppy offense by the
Dolphins that kept giving away the ball and creating opportunities for the Pack to shine. The
Dolphins continued to put up shots, but only shot 4-29 in the first half. At this point, Anya had
more blocked shots than the Dolphins had successful shots. At the half, the score was 35-12 –
State.
Bringing in the second half, State’s Cat Barber, a sophomore guard, was the first to put points on
the board. State’s offense came out really strong at the beginning of the half, causing the
Dolphins to foul often. With three minutes left, State’s Coach Mark Gottfried put in their third
string players, and shooting guard Patrick Wallace fired up a quick three pointer. These five guys
2. finished out the game strong and continued to shut the Jacksonville Dolphins down with a final
score of 79-43.
None the less, the students and fans in PNC Arena did not fail to create a hype and a great
atmosphere for the team. NC State has always been known for the reliable fans and the dedicated
student section. Wolfpack Nation has responded to the team with a lot of support and Anya
announced, “I’m very thankful for them and I love them. I love them to the end” (in regards to
the fans).
This now puts NC State at 3-0 for the beginning of the season. Their next game will be at home
on November 23rd against the University of South Florida Bulls at 4pm.
