4. II. Grammar: Cleft sentences
* Watch a short film and answer the question:
When would Bob and Albert see Michelle?
a. after dinner
b. after the movie
c. at two o’clock.

6. Bob and Albert would see Michelle after the movie.
S adverbial modifier
Different parts of the sentence can be emphasised
in this way:
- It was Bob and Albert who would see Michelle after
the movie. (Subject focus)
- It was Michelle who Bob and Albert would see after the
movie. (Object focus)

- It was after the movie that Bob and Albert would see
Michelle . (Adverbial focus)
Answer:

7. Cleft constructions, then, exhibit the
pattern:
It + be + focus + clause
(This is called a CLEFT SENTENCE because the
original sentence has been divided (or "cleft")
into two clauses)

8. Exercise 1. Write the following sentences after the
model, paying attention to the subject of the
sentence. (sentence 1-4: at class / 5-7: at home)
Example:
The man gave her the book.
 It was the man who gave her the book.
 It was the boy who visited his uncle last month.
1. The boy visited his uncle last month.
2. My mother bought me a present on my birthday.
 It was my mother who bought me a present on
my birthday.

9. 3. Huong and Sandra sang together at the party.
 It was Huong and Sandra who sang together at
the party. (They were Huong …)
4. Nam's father got angry with him.
 It was Nam's father who got angry with him.

10. Production : Make two sentences with the structure
of Example 1.
Suggested answer:
- It was NGUYEN DU who wrote Truyen Kieu.
- It was TRUYEN KIEU that Nguyen Du wrote .
- It was Harry Potter story book / film that
children all over the world love.

11. Exercise 2: Write the following sentences after
the model, paying attention to the object of the
sentence. (sentence 5-7 : at class / 1-4: at home)
Example:
The boy hit the dog in the garden.
 It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden.
5. The little boy greeted his grandfather in a strange
language.
 It was his grandfather that the little boy greeted
in a strange language.

12. 6. The pedestrian asked the policeman a lot of
questions.
7. The dog barked at the stranger.
 It was the policeman that The pedestrian asked
a lot of questions.
 It was the stranger that The dog barked at .
Production: Listen to the song and make the
sentence with this structure.

13. Exercise 3. Write the following sentences after the
model, paying attention to the adverbial modifier
of the sentence. (sentence 2,5: at class / the rest:
at home)
Example:
She bought him a present at the shop.
 It was at the shop that she bought him a
present.
2. She made some cakes for tea.
 It was for tea that she made some cakes.
The meeting started at 8.00 a.m
 It was at 8.00 a.m that the meeting started.

14. Listen to the song “Đôi” and fill in the
blank:
It is ………………. that the song is
performed.It is in the film “Cô Gái Xấu Xí” that the song is
performed.

15. Write four sentences that come from the sentence
below, paying attention to subject, object and adverbial
focus.
Kathy bought her husband an anniversary gift at
a sports shop.
1. It was Kathy who bought her husband an
anniversary gift at a sports shop.
2. It was her husband who Kathy bought an
anniversary gift at a sports shop.
3. It was an anniversary gift that Kathy bought her
husband at a sports shop.
4. It was at a sports shop that Kathy bought her
