2. Pre-game
Good officials’ communication
• Make eye contact with other officials regularly
• Use signals, not just to make calls but also to communicate
• Always relay signals to other officials
• Coach other officials: “your whistle!”, “move up field!”
• If a situation is unclear, use an officials’ time out
• Don’t to this too often, it breaks up the flow of the game
• Trust each other
• Especially lead and trail umpires on transition
• New lead focuses on getting to the goal
• New B covers everything going on behind A

3. Pre-game
On and off ball officiating
• Officials should not watch the player with the ball all the time
• When the ball is on the bench side of the field, the A umpire is the
on ball umpire with support from the B umpire, the C umpire is
the off ball umpire
• When the ball is on the far side of the field, the C umpire is the on
ball umpire, the A and B umpires are the off ball umpires
• The on ball umpire watches the player with the ball, the off ball
umpire(s) watches surrounding players
• The trail umpire is always an off ball umpire when the ball is
crossing the attacking restrainer

4. Pre-game
On and off ball officiating
• The importance of on and off ball officiating:
• Important to catch:
• Off-ball detaining
• Shooting space
• 3 seconds
• Interference
• By looking off ball, the officials catch the fouls that enrage
players the most and are signals of a game out of control
• Remember: officials are not there to watch the game, but to
ensure the safety of all players and fairness of the game.

5. Pre-game
The importance of good positioning
• Good positioning is a form of communication with other officials
• Other officials know what to expect, and who looks where
and at what
• Being in the right position means spotting the right fouls at the
right time
• Being in the right position can also help prevent fouls:
• When is a player more likely to commit a foul?
• With the official 3 meters away…
• Or with the official 13 meters away?
• Being in the right position gives the official credibility
